Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

My Dear Parishioners,

As we commence the second week of Advent, I invite all of you to attend our Parish Advent Mission this week, which will take place Monday through Wednesday. It should be a great way to enter into this liturgical season in a truly spiritual way and to prepare our hearts for the celebration of Christmas. We will have both morning and evening talks given by

Fr. Augustine Puchner, a Norbertine priest from St. Michael Abbey in Orange, CA. The morning talks will be at 9:00am and the evening talks at 6:00pm.

Who are the Norbertines? The official title of their community is the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré, sometimes called Praemonstratensians. They are a monastic community that follows the rule of St. Augustine, with an emphasis on communal prayer and the celebration of the Eucharist. They were founded in 1120 by St. Norb-ert. Norbert was a friend of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and so was largely influenced by the Cistercian ideals as to both the manner of life and the government of his order. How-ever, Norbertines are not strictly speaking ‘monks’, but what are called ‘canons regular’, which are brothers and priests who live the monastic life while still being involved in active ministry. Norbertines’ work typically involves preaching and the exercising of pastoral ministry. They frequently serve in parishes close to their abbeys or priories.

Fr. Augustine is currently the pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Costa Mesa. He is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and entered St. Michael’s Abbey in 1991. He was ordained a priest in 1997, and since 1998 has served as Novice Master in charge of the formation of their seminarians. His particular areas of expertise are spirituality and human development. I have met and interacted with Fr. Augustine on several occa-sions, and I believe that he will be a fine director of our parish mission. He came espe-cially recommended by Fr. Blaise Berg, our diocesan Vicar for Clergy.

As we celebrate on Monday the patronal feast day of our nation, the Immaculate Conception, I close with this magnificent quote from Venerable Fulton Sheen:

Just suppose that you could have pre-existed your own mother, in much the same way that an artist pre-exists his painting. Furthermore, suppose that you had the infinite power to make your mother anything that you pleased, just as a great artist like Raphael has the power of realizing his artistic ideas. Suppose you had this double power, what kind of mother would you have made for yourself? Would you have made her of such a type that would make you blush because of her unwomanly and un-mother-like actions? Would you have made her exteriorly and interiorly of such a character as to make you ashamed of her? Or would you have made her, so far as human beauty goes; the most beautiful woman in the world; and so far as beauty of the soul goes, one who would ra-diate every virtue, every manner of kindness and charity and loveliness; one who by the purity of her life and her mind and her heart would be an inspiration not only to you but even to your fellow men, so that all would look up to her as the very incarnation of what is best in motherhood?

Now if you who are an imperfect being and who have not the most delicate conception of all that is fine in life would have wished for the loveliest of mothers, do you think that our Blessed Lord, who not only pre-existed His own mother but who had an infinite power to make her just what He chose, would in virtue of all the infinite delicacy of His spirit make her any less pure and loving and beautiful than you would have made your own mother? If you who hate selfishness would have made her selfless and you who hate ugliness would have made her beautiful, do you not think that the Son of God, who hates sin, would have made His own mother sinless and He who hates moral ugliness would have made her immaculately beautiful?

In Jesus, through Mary, Father Jeremy Leatherby

There is an Orthodox icon that depicts John the Baptist with wings. It is called “The Angel of the Desert” and serves to

remind us that John is one of God’s messengers. As we busily prepare for the feast that marks the birth of Our Lord and the salvation of all, we are urged to pause for a moment by this great prophet who came to prepare the way for God.

John reminds us to look at how we are preparing to receive Him. Are we busy decorating our homes and shopping for gifts while at the same time neglecting to prepare ourselves spiritually? Do we go through the motions of going to church and re-ceiving the sacraments without a deeply rooted faith that tells us why we do what we do? The Lord will not judge by appearances.

Nor can we simply trust in our priv-ileged status as adopted children of God. God can raise up children from stones.

It is a great temptation for us to fall into a type of superficial “cultural Catholicism.” Like the Pharisees and Saducees that John confronted, we can appear to be models of faith but inwardly we are empty.

John preached repentance and for-giveness of sins. One of the best ways we can prepare ourselves for Christmastide is to take advantage of the sacrament of Reconciliation. Let us approach God humbly with open hearts and open minds. Allow Him to forgive our sins. Then we will truly be prepared to receive Him.
