Examples…

A science lesson which is ‘about’ Photosynthesis becomes a science lesson which is ‘about’:- how to recognise and measure change- how to conduct controlled testing- how to improve or evaluate precision- etc. using the vehicle of Photosynthesis

An art lesson which is ‘about’ Salvador Dali becomes an art lesson which is ‘about’:- how to analyse visual texts to produce interpretations- how to identify problems of interpretation- how to communicate one’s understanding in structured writing- etc. using the vehicle of Salvador Dali’s artwork

A history lesson which is ‘about’ the Bolshevik revolution becomes a history lesson which is ‘about’:

- how to evaluate the validity of a historical source- how to structure a research process- how to present to an audience- etc. using the vehicle of Russian political history

The subject content / knowledge is just as prominent (it is what everything hangs on) but it is the skill that forms the objective.

The Vision…

A curriculum which:

• Has the skills of learning and life at its heart

• Is planned coherently so as:

- to build on the skills base students were arriving with from PYP- to facilitate collaboration between subjects so that students

learn skills in a way that has been planned across all areas- to, through this planning process, provide a rigorous, balanced

‘diet’ of skills that are targeted at what students will need later on

• Makes use of content in appropriate ways, i.e. as a vehicle for skill development rather than working in opposition to it

Next steps…

We needed a common language which would allow us to see which skills should be at the heart of the curriculum, and to facilitate our teachers being able to plan provision for them together and across subject boundaries.
