TECHNOLOGY IN THE CLASSROOM

Technology of education is an array of tools that might prove helpful in advancing student learning.

An increased use of technology in the classroom by K–12 teachers yields a perceived positive impact on student learning, engagement and the development of 21st century skills.

Technology in the classroom can help students become capable users, information seekers, problem solvers and decision-makers.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY

Smartboard An interactive white board that allows the

teacher to project an image from a laptop to the front of the room.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY

Elmo Projector The main purpose of

the Elmo projector is to display documents and other objects on the wall or board that are translucent that the teacher wants to magnify for the students to see.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY

Projector Projectors hook up to the teacher’s laptop and

projects the screen from the laptop on the white board in the front of the room. This allows students to see a larger version of what is on the laptop screen.

EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGY

Eggspert This is the flashing, beeping, buzzing, interactive game

system that can be used anywhere in the classroom. It has two fun game modes, Quiz Show and Wheel of Fortune.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Assistive technology is technology used by individuals with disabilities in order to perform functions that might otherwise be difficult or impossible.

Using this type of technology will help children with disabilities become more independent.

BEST USE OF TECHNOLOGY

Everyone’s opinion will vary on how technology is best used in the classroom. Whatever is best for that classroom, and as long as the teacher is trained.

Page 14: Presentation tech. in the classroom

TYPE OF LEARNING IT’S BEST USED WITH

Technology increases the number of ways that educators can teach students by creating more dynamic visuals.

Technology engages many types of students regardless of learning style, language barriers and academic needs.

ADVANTAGES Exploring the world beyond textbooks

When schools install SMART interactive Whiteboards in the classroom, teachers are no longer limited to presenting information from a textbook. Students can use the web for experiments that would be impossible to try within the constraints of a standard science classroom. The entire world of the web is at their fingertips!

Empowering students With technology, students are invited to participate in interactive

technology-based learning, they take ownership of their educational process. Students don’t have to sit there while the teacher lectures. Students feel proud when they learn how to use computer technology in their classroom. This helps them to be more motivated in the classroom that they can do things independently.

Better attendance rates Some schools have iPads available for the students to learn, and

this encourages students to come to school more. The children are interested because the learning is with something they can relate to.

ADVANTAGES CONTINUED

Increased student productivity 65% of educators believe technology has helped

students become more productive in the classroom. Technology helps students access information more quickly without limiting students to just the resources available in the classroom and libraries.

Connect with the students more easily

DISADVANTAGES Upkeep and maintenance expenses

Once technology is provided for the schools, the cost of upkeep and maintenance can be too great for the school to maintain. There are new things coming out daily, so having up-to-date software is very expensive. Broken equipment could also be very expensive for school budgets. In order for the school to be successful in using technology it must be up to date.

Time lost There are many times that there are connection problems, downloading

issue, and other issues that can cause road blocks when doing a lesson. There are many demands of students and the amount of time spent in the classroom is more and more valuable.

Not trained A teacher needs to be trained to use the proper equipment because if

they don’t understand it then how can it be taught? Overuse and misuse of laptop

Overuse of laptops by students will make them slowly forget how to write by their hands. Also, children can misuse laptops by using them for the internet, or things that they aren’t supposed to be on during class.

CONCLUSION

“Teachers will not be replaced by technology, but teachers who don’t use technology will be replaced by those who do.” –Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach
