On November 2, 2017 President Carl Heilman and members of the administration, faculty and staff of Barton Community College were welcomed by War-den Martin Sauers to the Learning Celebration in the Spiritual Life Center at the Ells-worth Correctional Facility.

148 inmates were recognized for completing the necessary course work to receive Kansas high school diplomas, 18 & 32-hour recognition awards, as well as certificates in Introductory Craft Skills, OSHA 10 Safety, Manufac-turing Skills, Welding, Certiport IC3 Digital Literacy, Microsoft Word and Work Ready certificates.

The Barton Community College Foundation was proud to pres-ent 21 young men with scholar-ships to continue their education through the BASICS (Building Academic Skills in Correctional Settings) Program. These schol-arships were made possible through the generosity of donors whose vision and foresight ap-preciate the value of educating these students so they will have the employable skills necessary to return to our communities and join their families as contributing members of society.

In order for an inmate to be allowed the privilege of taking a class, they must earn that right by showing exemplary behavior and commitment to the edu-cational process. Over the years the Foundation has

been involved, I have met many of the inmates and visited with some of them in depth. The young men in our classes are, for the most part, incarcerated be-cause of one bad choice. They are at the core very

much like my own sons, they have mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, spouses and many times children. The phrase “Except for the Grace of God there go I” rings in my ears each time I meet an in-mate at ECF.

I would like to share an excerpt from one of their thank you notes. “I am truly at a loss for words try-ing to express how much of a gift ‘A College Education’ really is and how much it means to me. Now as I attempt to convey how I truly feel, I have to ask that you forgive me if it is poorly done. I’m just hoping that you could un-derstand how extremely difficult it is for someone who has never been successful to describe what success may feel like ……or for someone who has lived in fear their whole life to be expected to be courageous?

Since becoming a student with Barton and interact-ing with the faculty and staff, I have begun to develop a sense of self-confidence. I am no longer fearful – I have gained courage and I no longer fear rejection – I have been accepted for courses. Now I know it is re-ally true that the only limitations I have in life are the ones I place on myself.”

The Gift of Music

The Barton Community College Music Department received an early Christmas present from a loyal and beloved benefactor. The Dorothy M. Morrison Foundation

awarded a grant to the Barton Community College Foundation for the purpose of refurbishing the Steinway grand piano in the Morrison Chapel as well as the purchase of

nine additional pianos to be used by music instructors and in music labs; one 7-foot Acoustic Grand for the stage of the Fine Arts Auditorium; and one Yamaha Hybrid Grand for performances held in the Shafer Gallery.

“How is it that music can, without words, evoke our laughter, or fears, our fondest dreams?” “The true magic of music is that it connects people – It carries a message and the musicians are the messengers.” – Roy Ayers

Karole Erikson, Barton piano instructor, is just one of those messengers and she states “The Barton Music Department is thrilled beyond their highest dreams thanks to the Barton Piano Project funded by the Dorothy M. Morrison Founda-tion through the Barton Foundation.

The renovations to the 9-foot Steinway Grand Piano will bring it back to sounding and looking like a brand new

Steinway by Fall 2018.

All of the other new pianos in the Barton Fine Arts Building af-fect a wide range of people in a variety of ways. From the piano classes the music majors and mi-nors need for their degrees to the piano classes for Barton students

just wanting to learn more about music, these new pianos will assist student learning through new recording advancements and midi capabilities.

Ultimately, both audiences and performers at future Barton music events, will notice the positive effects of the new pianos with their fresh, full and expressive timbres.”

The Foundation is grateful and blessed for the many extraordinary gifts they receive, but it is hard to imagine any gift that could possibly have such far reaching outcomes as this one. The piano project will benefit not only the faculty and staff at Barton but members of the communities we serve who attend any vocal or instru-mental event at Barton Community College.

The Gift of an Education - The Gift of a Lifetime

When I found this quote, I could not help but think of all of the in-credible donors who over the years have funded scholarships for the students of Barton Community College. What a noble, unselfish and visionary gift; to know the value of education and the impact it has upon the world.

I know I speak for the staff when I express how exciting it is each year when we sit down to award scholarships. Each year I am humbled by the foresight and generosity of so many who made this gift of educa-tion possible for students they most likely will never have the opportunity to meet. It is a privilege to be able to carry out that legacy for them and ensure that their faith and confidence in our stewardship was well founded.

“The goal of education is not just to increase theamount of knowledge, but to create the possibilitiesfor a child to invent and discover; to becomeadults capable of doing great things.” - Jean Piaget

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALLOF OUR SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS!

At the November meeting of the Barton CommunityCollege Foundation Board of Directors, auditorsDanielle Hollingshead and Vickie Dreiling, representing Adams, Brown, Beran and Ball CPA, reported that once again the BCC Foundation received an unqualified audit.

The audit covered the fiscal year from July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017. An auditor’s opinion ofunqualified represents the highest opinion possible, meaning the audited statements conform to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and represent theFoundation and its donor in a fiscally and ethicalmanner at all times.

The Foundation Staff: Coleen, Michelle and Donna

Christmas is my favorite time of the year; a time of renewal, sharing and understanding – so I never share a Christmas message without considerable soul searching. Over Thanksgiving break I began searching through letters, cards and notes that I had received from friends and loved ones over the years. As I sat by the fire reliving each expression of friendship and love, I found my mind wandering randomly, first to this thought and then that one, just like the little silver ball that bounces all over the place inside a pinball machine. I was trying without much luck to formulate that collage of thought into a Christmas message, then suddenly I found just what I was looking for in the wisdom of an anonymous author and it seems perfectly suited for what I want to share with all of you.

“We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the heart; love, kindness, joy, understanding, sympathy, tolerance, forgiveness….”

“We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the mind; ideas, dreams, purposes, ideals, principles, plans, inventions, projects, poetry….”

“We give of ourselves when we give gifts of the spirit; prayer, vision, beauty, aspiration, peace, faith, hope, friendship….”

“We give of ourselves when we give the gift of time; when we areminute builders of more abundant living for others….”

“We give of ourselves when we give the gift of works; encouragement, inspiration, guidance, motivation, praise, comfort….”

- Author unknownThis greeting may seem unusual coming from someone whose job is to garner donations and raise mon-ey, but I believe during this, the true season of giving, we all need to step back and reflect on the power we have within ourselves to impact the lives of others without spending a dime. The Foundation counts the gift of your loyalty and support as the greatest gift we can receive and our fondest wish for each of you is that you receive in abundance that which you so unselfishly share with others.

Merry Christmasand a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

On November 13, 2017 six Barton student ambassadors gath-ered in the Foundation office to make calls for our annual Thank-A-Thon. This event, which began in 2010, was established as a way to reach out to donors during the Thanksgiving season and simply say thanks for all they have done. These one-on-one phone calls give us the opportunity to acknowledge the support and loyalty of our many donors with a simple, heart-felt thank you. Whether cash donations for scholarships and program enhancements, Gift-in-Kind donations to various de-partments for much needed equipment and supplies, or hours given volunteering to assist us with our fund raising efforts – they are the life blood of the Foundation and we would not enjoy any level of success without each and every one of them.

We never take for granted the impact your involvement makes on our ability to achieve our mission year after year.

To those of you we couldn’t reach by phone, we thank you so very much for your support of the Foundation. We hope that during this holiday season you receive the many bless-ings you deserve.

Thank-A-Thon

ThankYou!
