Presentation of Progress

Desired Industry

It is my dream to work in the television industry, particularly the studio . The precise area I have not completely decided yet, but I have identified a few roles that interest me in particular and I hope to gain experience each of these to help me reach my decision.

The role where everyone usually has to start at is right at the bottom, as a production runner. This can involve anything, even making cups of tea and is a role where you have to do whatever it takes to keep everyone else happy, until you get a break which allows you to climb up the ladder.

From here I would ideally like to one day be more involved in the directing/producing of a show, whether that be as a researcher or higher up on the floor.

Runner - Profile Job Role

The “foot soldiers” of the production team

Anything from office administration to crowd control

Willing to fulfill any role required

Office roles e.g. answering phones, data entry, admin

Production roles e.g. maintaining set, co-ordinate extras

Required Skillset

Organisation and administrative skills

Computer skills

Good communication and interpersonal skills

The ability to work without supervision

Versatility and willingness to learn

Knowledge of health and safety etc.

Conception, Design & Production

I have been blogging some of my relevant production work thus far on my Tumblr page, which an extremely useful platform to showcase my talent: http://mattyeagle.tumblr.com

Here is a screen grab of my blog where I have uploaded a link to the studio production we created last year, and a shot from my camera.

Conception, Design & Production

I also used the blog to document my initial logo design. I have established the theme of orange and white, something I will keep consistent throughout my portfolio of work.

The logo as it stands is simple but also effective. I hope to make it more unique with the help of someone who has expertise in photoshop.

I also need to find space within in the logo where I can state my desired role, e.g. production assistant.

Conception, Design & Production

Also documented on my Tumblr is my CV development. I have already made a few initial changes but I know there is a lot of improvements I can still make before it is ready to be sent off to industry employers, for example what information is especially relevant, and a design which stands out.

I know that I have a strong lack of industry experience which would hinder me as it stands, so I need to gain some more of this in order to bulk up my CV a bit more.

Strengths

I think that the strengths in my work are mainly my organisation skills, a credential that is key for a production assistant.

This mainly in terms of my professionalism when dealing with actors for example, which I was responsible for when casting for our latest drama, Hokey Cokey, as documented on my blog. This is something I have developed from previous jobs in admin and customer service.

I believe this makes me extremely reliable and dependable, willing and able to carry out any task delegated to.

I also believe I have a creative eye, which is extremely necessary for this industry. I often attempt to think of innovative ways to do things differently in the hope they will have a unique effect on my work.

Weaknesses

My main weakness in my skillset is a perceived shyness and I know it is something I must actively attempt to overturn. Although I am more than willing to complete and get involved in any task, sometimes my quietness gives out a different message.

In terms of production elements, I need to develop my identity and image so that I will stand out to employers, something I will hopefully achieve by the end of this unit.

I also appreciate that my current lack of experience within the industry is a weakness and something I need to address so that I will be considered for jobs.

Research

In my research I have tried to find out as much about my desired job role as possible. There are lots of videos online which describe the job responsibilities, as well as the skill set required, for example this video of Tom Kelly, who describes his job as a researcher on BBC sport. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6kcO5Izgg4

In the coming weeks I will be designing my business cards and one extremely useful website for this is http://www.designer-daily.com/examples-of-great-business-card-design-23560.

The website features a list of extremely innovative and unique business cards, which have inspired me to follow this trend and make mine stand out.

Research I will also be producing my showreel in the

coming weeks so I have been looking at a number of online examples to help give me ideas. One that stood out is the cinematographer Nelson Cragg, who is famous for his work on Breaking Bad among others.

Remaining Work

As for the remaining work there are a number of tasks I need to focus on a complete within the coming weeks:

Logo – Fine tune, establish image and direction

CV – include only relevant info, get experience

Business cards – find innovative style

Showreel – collect examples of the work that I am proud of ready to be edited into a package
