Telemetry – current challenges for the Caribbean

Phenomenal Costs and Inflexibility associated with a Private Data Network

  • 7

    For Example …

    Temp sensor RTU

    1. RTU - TT $20,000.00 - $40,000.002. Tower, Repeater Equipment, Transport, Labour - TT $350,000.00

Almost $400,000.00 to monitor a single temperature point !!!

  • 8

    List of Challenges …

    1. Poor Coverage Area2. Phenomenal Costs to achieve necessary

    communications coverage

  • 9

    Communications Speed

Traditional radio/dial up communication methods yield speeds of 1.2 to 9.6 kb/s. Compare this with a good DSL line of 256 kb/s.

Higher speeds will require Microwave links which will require towers for line of sight = Millions of TT$.

  • 10

    List of Challenges …

    1. Poor Coverage Area2. Phenomenal Costs to achieve necessary

    communications coverage3. Slow communications speed

  • 11

    Proprietary Protocols

Most SCADA suppliers traditionally use proprietary protocols to achieve “over-the-air” communications which can lock the customer into their devices and equipment only.

  • 12

    List of Challenges …

    1. Poor Coverage Area2. Phenomenal Costs to achieve necessary

communications coverage3. Slow communications speed4. Proprietary Protocols

  • 13

    Costly Network Maintenance

The customer incurs the highest cost in maintaining their own private data network.

Towers, Repeater Sites, Radio Equipment, Security, Losses from Vandalism, etc

  • 14

    List of Challenges …

    1. Poor Coverage Area2. Phenomenal Costs to achieve necessary

communications coverage3. Slow communications speed4. Proprietary Protocols5. High on-going cost of maintaining private data network

These factors have made organisations think twice and three times even before investing in

    SCADA !!!

    SCADABOX … telemetry without bounds

SCADABOX is a GPRS-based Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) solution that allows for Remote Monitoring of physical parameters as well as Control of plant and equipment.

Developed by Engineers working in Trinidad, US and Israel over a combined duration of 2 years.

    What is GPRS ?

GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. It is a data-only communications layer supported by GSM Networks.

Both bMobile and Digicel provide it.

You may have used it before and not even have known it … if you viewed email or surfed the web on your cell phone … yes, that’s GPRS!!!

  • 17

SCADABOX – Advantages of GPRS based Telemetry

Drastic reduction in Total Cost of Ownership and Enormous improvement in ROI

  • 18

Let’s take our example again …

    1. RTU less than TT $15,0002. SIM card monthly rental TT $100 - $150 (unlimited data)

    Let’s see … < TT $16,000 as opposed to TT $400,000 !!!Any questions ?

Drastic reduction in Total Cost of Ownership and Enormous improvement in ROIVirtually Unlimited Coverage AreaDrastic Increase in Data Speeds

  • 23

    Data Rates …

Radio-based Telemetry systems typically achieve data rates of 1.2 to 9.6 kb/s.

SCADABOX can achieve rates of 115.2 kb/s using GPRS communications.

Drastic reduction in Total Cost of Ownership and Enormous improvement in ROIVirtually Unlimited Coverage AreaDrastic Increase in Data SpeedsUse of Open Protocols

  • 25

    Open Protocols …

SCADABOX uses only open protocols for communications:

    • GSM• GPRS• Modbus• OPC• TCP/IP – the protocol of the Internet

Freely downloadable specifications from the Internet.

  • 26

    So let’s compare …

    Security Issues …

Security is a key concern with all organisations and the information systems/infrastructure that supports them.

SCADABOX leverages the inherent security of the GPRS private data network to provide security.

  • 30

Security Issues …To “break-in” to a SCADABOX GPRS system, a potential intruder must have access to the following:

    • SIM card on same subnet on GPRS network• APN Name• Username for APN• Password for APN• Duplicate the IP Address of the Master Station in which case the TCP/IP network will detect it.

Bottom line … SCADABOX GPRS networks are very very secure!!!
