Species
Species is a group of living organisms with common characteristics that can breed among themselves to produce fertile offspring
PopulationA population is made up of living organisms of the same species that live & breed in a particular habitat

A pyramid of number
Crown of thorn starfishhere is emerging evidence that poor water quality resulting from floods and extreme weather events in the summers of 2009 to 2011 have created conditions for crown-of-thorns starfish numbers to increase at some locations on the Great Barrier Reef.Previous outbreaks have followed large, drought-breaking floods, which release large amounts of nutrients into the Reef ecosystem. The elevated nutrient levels cause an increase in phytoplankton, which is the main food source for crown-of-thorns starfish larvae. This enables a much higher than usual number of larvae to survive and develop into juvenile crown-of-thorns starfishat which stage they start feeding on coral.
When crown-of-thorn starfish numbers are low, corals can recover from any damage caused bytheir feeding - maintaining a balanced and healthy environment. At these times, control is not required, as this is a naturally occurring event. However, when thecrown-of-thorns starfishpopulation increases to a point where the coral can no longer recover from the damage caused, there is significant danger to the health of the reef. This is called a crown-of-thorns starfishoutbreak.
54Most importantly, they provide protection and shelter for many different species of fish. Without coral reefs, these fish are left homeless with nowhere to live and no where to have their babies.Reefs play an important role in protecting the shoreline from storms and surge water. Barrier reefs, such as Floridas, were named for the way they reduce waves and buffer the shores. Barrier reefs help stabilize mangroves and seagrass beds, which can easily be uprooted by large waves and h6 currents.
