Indian architecture- Paradigm of Art !!!

Architecture of India is the most tangible and

awe-inspiring projection of India’s art, culture and global discourse

across thousands of years

Page 3: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1
Page 4: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1

Why are these just site seeing

spots?

Why are these not being

brought into main stream

architecture?

Why are traditional houses and

buildings being replaced by

modern architecture?

Why aren’t traditional tried

and tested scientific concepts

behind Indian architecture not

being incorporated in modern

construction?

Why is the awareness so low

about different forms of Indian

architecture?

However some questions still remain

unanswered!!

Anveshana, Sanskrit word which

literally means exploration, is a

project and campaign to bring back

the glory of dying traditional

architecture of India. It basically

involves a research oriented

methodology to make traditional

architecture relevant in current times

in terms of designing, technology,

durability and aesthetic appeal.

Objectives:

• Finding a lost design culture

• Identifying peculiarities in detailing of

some of the architectural masterpieces

• Exploring technology of design works

• Preserving designs to prevent from getting

extinct

• Deriving eco-friendly designs for current

times

• Documenting various aspects for the

benefit

of present and future generation

Hystory of Chalukyan Architecture

First clear recognition in 1836, by Sir Walter Elliot, in the 4th

volume of the ‘Journal of the Royal Asiatc Society’.

The type of Architecture might have evolved in temples of

Aihole and Pattadakallu in 756 AD. (But they still had some Dravidian style left in them)

Chalukyan style of Architecture is primarily evolved from

Dravidian architecture style.

General Information on Chalukyan

Architecture

Shikharams are stepped froming pyramids of different heights

The plan will be normally star shaped.

Pillars in the later stages of Chalukyan style were often circular

in shape.

Temples will be normally built on a base of 5-15 ft adding value

to the overall elevation of the temple.

The structures were without mortars. The joints were given

more priority.

The outer patterns of temples fllowed ‘Shilpa Shastra’ in

designing florals, mythological figures, animal carvings.

Page 8: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1

Examples of Chalukyan Architecture

Ittagi Temple, Gadag

Page 9: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1

Characteristics of Ittagi Temple

(Chalukyan Architecture)

The inner hall of the temple is 27 feet and in square shape.

Besides Main entrance (Dwara Bagilu), it has doorways on

North and South also.

The pillars have typical carvings of Chalukyan style.

The projections intended for protection from sun and rain adds

dignity to the designs also.

Typical sand stone usage was reduced to textured soap stone to

add life to the structures.

Page 10: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1

Characteristics of Ittagi Temple

(Chalukyan Architecture)

The gopuram rises in 3 storeys with remnants of 4th

storeyed

masonry work.

4 miles from Ittagi, in a place called Kukkunur, there is a

group if temples with similar architecture.

They contain lingas probably from the age of 9th

century.

The Shikharas are more of Dravidian style, but the pillars inside

resemble Chalukyan stlye.

But, red stone used for construction is decaying year on year

now.

It is a ready reference to the benefits of local available materials

in construction.

The flooring in the King’s courtyard has laid in such a way that

it has retained its shining from centuries.

The usage of Jalis which helps in achieving aesthetic lighting

and ventilation inside the house without compromising quality.

Our Expectations

• Since the cause we are working on is niche, it is highly

important that more and more people become aware of the

campaign. We seek your co-operation in spreading this

awareness.

• For people to believe in the cause, they need to be made

acquainted with the seriousness of the issue. We need your

support to make people realize the urgency of preserving

Indian Architecture.

• Organizations like you are great influencers and would be

significant in developing positive sentiment among masses

about our architecture.

• To achieve all the above, we request you to feature Anveshana in

your esteemed organization and feed in momentum to the

campaign

Page 24: Anveshana presentation - Chalukyan Architecture - Presentation 1

About Investment and Why Crowd

funding

• Any one who wants to get associated even with small amounts

can be a part of the campaign

• It is easy to keep track of funds accumulated at any point of time

by all stakeholders

• People from any geography or region can access the campaign

and can contribute to it

• A successful crowd funding can also boost the morale of

entrepreneurs in India about fundraising.

Campaign would require funds of at least $ 15,000 to come up with a

fruitful research that

would be relevant to current times. Crowd funding platform at

indiegogo.com is being used to generate these funds.
