ENGRAVING
The art forming designs by cutting, corrosion by acids, a photographic
process, etc …, on the surface of a metal plate, block of wood, linoleum,
or the like, for or as for the purpose of taking off impressions or prints
of the design so formed
MATERIALS OF THE ENGRAVING
THE LINOLEUM
Linoleum :
hard, washable floor covering formed by
coating burlap or canvas
with linseed oil, powdered cork, and rosin,
using sometimes for engraving
MATERIALS OF THE ENGRAVING
U-gouge - tool used for
carving (usually printing
blocks); blade point is
shaped like a “U”
Veiner - tool used for
carving; blade point is
shaped like a “V”
Vocabulary:
•Blade : cuchilla
•U-gouge: gubia

Vocabulary:
ROLLERS or BRAYERS : rodillos
BRAYERS :
a small roller for inking type
by hand
Roller a cylindrical body, revolving on a fixed
axis, especially one to facilitate the movement
of something passed over or around it

. TECHNIQUE OF LINOLEUM
LINOLEUM ENGRAVING, also
called LINOCUT is a printmaking technique.
A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a
sharp knife, u-gouge, with the raised uncarved
areas representing a reversal (mirror image) of
the parts to show printed. The linoleum sheet
is inked with a roller (called a brayer), and
then impressed onto paper .The actual printing
can be done by hand or with a press.
Vocabulary:
To carve: tallar, esculpir, grabar.

STAMPING
•The act or process of impressing
•The art, process, or business of
producing printed material by
means of inked type and a printing
press or by similar means, like a

Vocabulary:
Stamp: estampar o calcografiar
