TEACHERDEVOTIONALRead:Matthew21:1-11Imagineaparade—loud,fun,crowdedandfullofexcitement.Theparadetowelcomeaking-theMessiahmusthavebeenaparadetimes10.TheBibletellsusthatpraisefilledthestreetsforJesus’entrancetoJerusalem.Crowdsofpeoplethrewouttheircoatsandwavedpalmbranches,bothsignstohonoravictoriousking.ThiswasJesusplainlyannouncinghisidentity.Nolongerdidheaskhisdisciplestobequietaboutwhohewas.Instead,heenteredthecitylikeaking.However,Jesuswasadifferentkindofking.Hewasalsohumble.Insteadofridinginonamajestichorse,thiskingchosesomethingquiet;somethinggentle.Hecameridinginonababydonkey.ThepeoplewatchingthissceneunfoldknewthewordsofZechariah9:9,“…Behold,yourkingiscomingtoyou;righteousandhavingsalvationishe,humbleandmountedonadonkey,onacolt,thefoalofadonkey.”AndrightbeforetheireyeswasJesus,theexactfulfillmentofthisprophecywrittendown500yearsearlier.Thispowerfulimageshould’vecluedthemintothefactthatJesuswouldbeadifferentkindofkingandMessiah-notakingofwarwhowouldendtheiroppressionfromRomewithaviolentrevolt,butinsteadahumblekingofmercyandpeace,whowascomingtodeliverthemfromanevengreater,darkeroppression-theirsin.But,thepeoplewerewearyandhungryforbattle,andtheymissedthepurposeofJesusthatday.FivedayslatertheywereshoutingdifferentthingsatJesus,andinsteadofwelcominghimintothecity,theywerespittingonhimashewalkedupahillwithacross,todie.Asmuchaswemaywanttobelievewewould’veseenthesignificanceofthewayJesusenteredJerusalem,thisstoryshouldalsoremindusofallthetimeswehavemissedtheforestforthetrees.HadthepeoplethenrealizedwhatJesuswasreallybringing—salvationforeveryoneforever—theparademayhavebeenevenmorespectacular.Somedaywe’llhavethatparade.TheBibledescribesthatinRevelation7:9-10“…agreatmultitudethatnoonecouldnumber,fromeverynation,fromalltribesandpeoplesandlanguages,standingbeforethethroneandbeforetheLamb[that’sJesus],clothedinwhiterobes,withpalmbranchesintheirhands,andcryingoutwithaloudvoice,…”Can’twait.Godiseternalandfaithful.Howdothesetwoqualitiescomfortyou?
