Beidel 12th Nationally in Tackles• Linebacker Grant Beidel has totaled 65 tackles through sixth games, 12th in FCS this season and sec-ond in the Big South.• The senior put together back-to-back games with 10+ tackles, after reaching 15 against Cumberland and 12 against Wofford.• He established a career-high against the Citadel, managing 17 tackles, which ranks top 10 in the country for a single game this season.• The linebacker led the Blue Hose a year ago with 76 tackles in 11 games but sits just 11 tackles shy of that total this season with five games to play.• The senior has reached at least six tackles in every game this season with double-digit tackles on three occasions.

Cheek Showing Consistency• Redshirt junior Ben Cheek has proved consistent in the backfield for PC over the past four games, leading the team to a 3-1 record.• Cheek eclipsed his career-high for the second time this season, throwing for 153 yards on 10 completions against Saint Francis.• Cheek threw for a then career-high 142 yards on five completions against Campbell on Sept. 16, throwing two touchdowns in a game for the first time in his ca-reer.• He followed up that performance with one of the best of his career, completing 14-of-15 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown against Cumberland on Sept. 23. He added 56 rushing yards against the Phoenix to give him 204 yards of total offense, just shy of his career-high.• He established a new career-high with 19 completions against Wofford on Sept. 30, throwing for 130 yards, in addition to rushing for a team-high 44 yards.• Over the four games, Cheek has thrown for 573 yards, an average of 143.3 yards per game, while also rushing for 201 yards.

Offense Improving• Through six games this season, the PC offense has managed 102 points (17.0 ppg) and 1,779 yards of total offense, while averaging 5.1 yards per play.• A year ago, the offense managed just 61 points (10.2 ppg) in the first six games, while totaling 1,619 yards of total offense and averaging 4.0 yards per play.• The Blue Hose have already eclipsed their touchdown total from a year ago, finding the end zone 13 times in six games this season, compared to just 10 times all of last season.

Other Notables Against Saint Francis• The blocked punt return for a touchdown was the first by PC since 2011 when Justin Bethel recovered a block punt in the end zone at Furman on September 24.• PC also recorded a safety for the first time since 2011 when Donelle Williams tackled a Coastal Carolina rush-er in the end zone for the two points.• PC held Saint Francis scoreless in the first half. It was the first time since 2014 that PC held its oppo-nent scoreless in the opening half, when it allowed zero points in the first half against Gardner-Webb in the season finale.• The defense held the Red Flash to 243 yards of to-tal offense, its lowest total of the season and the least amount of yards allowed by PC this season. SFU entered the game averaging 31.8 points per game but came

away with just 14 points.• Darquez Watson scored his first touchdown of the sea-son with a 50-yard reception on a pass from Ben Cheek in the fourth quarter. Watson finished the game with three receptions for a career-high 65 receiving yards to aid PC in the win.• Dashawn Davis led the Blue Hose again with four receptions for 60 yards, including a 42-yarder in the fourth quarter to set up PC’s final touchdown of the game.• The Blue Hose finished the contest with 204 rushing yards, its third game this season with at least 200 on the ground. PC has found the end zone on the ground at least once in every contest so far.• PC was able to score 26 points against an SFU team that entered the game having allowed just 30 points all season. The Red Flash entered the game ranked second in the FCS in scoring defense, allowing just eight points per game. They also ranked third in the nation in turn-overs forced with 14 entering the game and managed just one takeaway on the day.

Presley Sends Wofford Backwards• Redshirt freshman KJ Presley recorded 3.5 tackles for loss against Wofford for a loss of 10 yards.• Presley’s 3.5 tackle for loss are the most by a PC play-er since Isaiah Lynn totaled 4.0 tackles for loss against Gardner-Webb in 2014.• The 10 yards on tackles for loss are the most since last season when Khari Rosier (16) and Grant Beidel (11) both reached double digits at Chattanooga.• Presley now has 5.0 tackles for loss on the year, put-ting him on pace for 11.0 on the year, which would be the most by a PC player since 2013.

Robinson Nose for the Endzone• Freshman Mark Robinson is now tied for the team lead in touchdowns. He scored his fourth of the season on Sept. 23 against Cumberland.• The four TDs are already the most by a PC player since 2015 when Darrell Bridges scored eight touchdowns.• Robinson trails fellow freshman back Marable by one for the team lead. The two have combined to score nine of PC’s 12 offensive touchdowns this season.

Blue Hose Top Cumberland for Second Win• Presbyterian recorded its second straight win with a 27-20 victory over Cumberland over Saturday at Bailey Memorial Stadium.• The Blue Hose have now won back-to-back games for the first time since 2014, when they topped Monmouth and Charleston Southern in consecutive weeks.• DaShawn Davis proved the hero for PC, scoring a 49-yard touchdown with just over two minutes to play to put the team in front for good.• Torrance Marable rushed for game-high 139 yards on 24 carries in the win, while catching two passes for 22 yards and a touchdown.• Ben Cheek continued his strong play, completing 14-of-15 passes for 148 yards and a touchdown through the air and totaling 56 rushing yards on 15 carries on the ground.• Mark Robinson scored his team-leading fourth touch-down of the season on a one-yard touchdown run.

Marable Named BSC Freshman of the Week• Torrance Marable was named Big South Freshman of the Week on September 25.

PC QUICK FACTS NOTES

@BLUEHOSEFTBALL | 3 | GOBLUEHOSE.COM

• Marable recorded his second 100-yard rushing game of the season, totaling 139 yards on 24 carries in PC’s 27-20 win over Cumberland.• The rookie also caught two passes for 22 yards and a touchdown, his third of the season.• The running back had a 25-yard run that helped set up Norton’s game-tying field goal and later managed a 14-yard run just before DaShawn Davis’s go-ahead touchdown.• His 139 rushing yards were tied for the third-most by a Big South player this season at the time.

Norton BSC Special Teams Player of the Week• Brett Norton was named Big South Special Teams Player of the Week for the first time in his career, after totaling a career-high nine points against Cumberland.• His first field goal was a 28-yard make in the second quarter to make it a 17-7 PC lead at the time.• The second was not only a career-long 47-yard field goal to tie the game at 20-20, but also the longest field goal by a PC kicker in the program’s Division I era.• The junior kicker and punter also converted all three PATs in the game.• Perhaps just as importantly, Norton’s final punt of the game pinned the Phoenix on the one-yard line, allowing the Blue Hose defense to close out the game.

Other Notables Against Cumberland• PC totaled 386 yards of total offense, its most in a game since reaching 415 yards against Monmouth in 2014.• PC was 4-for-4 in the red zone, converting each op-portunity for the first time this season.• Grant Beidel once again led the defense, totaling a game-high 15 tackles, including 1.0 tackle for loss. It was the second time this season surpassing 10 tackles. • Nick Moss tallied 11 tackles and forced a fumble in the victory. It was his first double-digit tackle game of the season. The forced fumble came late in the fourth quarter, allowing PC to run more time off the clock and force Cumberland to use their timeouts.

Tell the World, We’re Playing at Home• PC is now slated to play eight home games in 2017, the most ever in the program’s history. • The eight home games are also the most in all of FCS this season. Even without the schedule change and the addition of a home game, PC was scheduled to lead FCS with its previously scheduled seven home games.• The eight regular-season home games are the most by an FCS program since 2013 when Mercer played eight home games in their first season since reinstating the program. However, the Bears played a 12-game sched-ule that season.• The slate includes a seven-game homestand with the first six played on consecutive weeks, beginning Sept. 9 against the Citadel in a game moved from Charleston due to Hurricane Irma. PC’s open date comes on Oct. 21 before capping off the homestand against Big South foe Kennesaw State on Oct. 28.• Due to the schedule change, PC will go 65 days be-tween road games (Aug. 31 - Nov. 4).• PC will play just two games outside the Carolinas, traveling to Monmouth on Nov. 4 and Liberty on Nov. 11.

PC Renews Two In-State Series• The 2016 schedule features a pair of in-state foes as PC will take on both The Citadel and Wofford in 2017.

• The Blue Hose will face the Bulldogs for the first time since 2010, while they will face the Terriers for the first time since 2013.• PC and Wofford have a long history on the gridiron with 83 previous meetings. The series is currently tied at 40-40-3. Wofford comes to Clinton for the first time since 2011.• PC and The Citadel have met 62 times on the gridiron but just twice since the Blue Hose moved to Division I, both coming in Charleston.

Robinson Big South Freshman of the Week• Freshman running back Mark Robinson was named Big South Freshman of the Week on September 18.• Against Campbell, the rookie rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.• He is the first PC player to score two rushing touch-downs in a game since Darrell Bridges had two against Campbell in 2015.

Cheek Sets Career Highs vs. Campbell• Quarterback Ben Cheek threw for a career-high 142 yards in the win over Campbell to go with two touch-downs, also a career-high.• It was the first game in his career in which he threw more than one touchdown pass.• He threw the two longest pass plays of his career, a 63-yard completion to Marable and a 70-yard comple-tion to McGhee, both going for TDs.• The 142 yards came on just five completions for an average of 28.4 yards per completion.

Other Notables Over Campbell• Damien McGhee recorded the first touchdown of his career with the longest PC pass play of the season, a 70-yard pass from Cheek in the second quarter.• Elijah Turner recorded his first career interception in the fourth quarter, leading to PC’s final touchdown to ice the game. The sophomore totaled a career-high six tackles, one more than his previous high of five last week against The Citadel.• Brien Washington managed 1.5 sacks on the night to lead PC, a part of his three stops from the defensive end spot.• Malachi Brown reached eight tackles in the victory, tied for second-most by a Blue Hose play, coming in just his second career start.• PC held Campbell to just 4-of-14 on third downs, a conversion percentage of just 28.6 percent.

Marable Opens Season with a Bang• Freshman running back Torrance Marable got his col-lege career off to a fast start, showing out in his first two games this season.• He totaled 255 rushing yards in his first two games of the season, the most by a PC player in back-to-back games since 2015.• The total is the also the most rushing yards by a PC player in the first two games of a season in the pro-gram’s Division I era. The previous high was 220 yards by Lance Byrd in 2011.

Beidel Racks Up Tackles Against Citadel• Senior linebacker Grant Beidel amassed a career-high 17 tackles against the Citadel.• It was the most tackles by a PC player since Donelle Williams recorded 18 tackles against Chattanooga in

HEAD COACH TOMMY SPANGLER

Tommy Spangler begins his seventh year as head coach at PC and first since the 2006 season, after being promoted from defensive coordinator on Nov. 22, 2016. Spangler just finished his fourth year back at PC, and 14th season overall, after having served as a defensive coordinator, an assistant coach, and head coach. Earlier this season, the defense was ranked first nationally in third down defense, holding opponents to 25.5% through the first six games. Donelle Williams, a linebacker under Spangler, finished his career third in Big South history in total tackles with 402. Ed Britt tied the school single season and career record for interceptions with four his last season and seven for his career. Under Spangler several Blue hose have earned Big South defensive all-conference honors, including two in 2014 and three in 2015. In his first season back, in 2014, Spangler helped PC to a 6-5 record, the program’s first winning season since 2007. His defense shut down opponents and led to Blue Hose ranked wins over No. 12 Furman and No. 22 Charleston Southern. Against FCS competition, PC finished with a 5-2 record, its only two losses coming to FCS playoff teams Coastal Carolina and Liberty. PC’s defense set new school Division I records in nearly every category, including total offense yards (4163), opponent points scored (270), opponent touchdowns (36) and opponent total offense per game (378.5 yards). Those records come in a season that saw the Blue Hose play three FBS teams and against FCS competition, PC allowed only 15.9 points and 310.0 total offense yards per game. The Blue Hose also finished the season with the nation’s second-ranked red zone defense. Blue Hose defensive players earned four weekly awards in 2015, including the entire defense receiving the Big South Defensive Player of the Week award for PC’s win over Western Carolina. Defensive back Ed Britt and linebacker Donelle Williams also earned First Team All-Big South honors in 2015 under Spangler.Spangler spent six years as defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech prior to returning to PC. During that time, Spangler took a Bulldog defense that ranked dead last in the country (among FBS programs) in scoring defense, rushing defense and total defense prior to his arrival and coached them into one of the top defensive units in the Western Athletic Conference. He guided a defense that had six All-WAC selections in 2011, and that scored six defensive touchdowns, the best scoring defense Tech saw in two decades. The Bulldog defense ended the year ranked 13th in the nation in turnover margin and had a +15 turnover margin during the team’s seven-game winning streak.

Spangler was a 2011 Broyles Award nominee for his defensive efforts that season. Spangler has spent almost three decades as a full-time coach on the college football sideline. He began his first 10 years at Georgia Southern, helping lead the program to a pair of Division I-AA national titles. After taking the job as the secondary coach for the Eagles in 1987, Spangler was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 1990 and then took over the sole reins of the program’s defense in 1992. The Stone Mountain, Ga., native earned the Southern Conference Defensive Coach of the Year Award in 1993 as the Eagles won the league title and advanced to the playoffs. His defense ranked sixth nationally in scoring defense. Spangler spent 10 seasons at PC the first time around, first as an assistant coach from 1997- 2000 and then as head coach from 2001-06, During his six years as PC’s head football coach, Spangler guided the Blue Hose to a 42-24 record - a mark that stands as the highest winning percentage (.571) among the school’s 14 head football coaches. In 2006, Spangler’s defense ranked first in the South Atlantic Conference in scoring defense (13.2 ppg) and total defense (233.5 ypg) en route to a 7-4 record. In 2005, he led PC to a 10-2 mark, the South Atlantic Conference title, the school’s first appearance ever in the NCAA Division II playoffs, and a top 10 national ranking, earning him the league’s Coach of the Year Award. Spangler garnered two American Football Coaches Association Region 2 Coach of the Year Awards while with the Blue Hose. His defenses were ranked in the top half of the South Atlantic Conference in all defensive categories each of his last eight seasons there, and his 1998 Blue Hose unit forced 48 turnovers in 11 games, and ranked first nationally in turnover margin (+2.27). Spangler played defensive back at the University of Georgia from 1979 through 1982, and was a member of the 1980 Division I National Championship team that defeated Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl. He lettered his senior season after helping Georgia to the 1982 Southeastern Conference title, the program’s third straight. Spangler earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Georgia in the spring of 1984. He is married to the former Kim Pierce of Ft. White, Fla., and they are the parents of three children, Pierce, Peyton, and Gracie.
