Big Brother, Big Sister This sibling class is for children age three to 10 and their expectant parents. We welcome 2-year-old siblings, but advise parents to consider their child’s maturity and understanding of the upcoming birth. The class familiarizes children with the hospital and prepares them for your absence. Class includes a tour of the suites, a video focusing on a child’s experiences with the birth of a sibling, dress-up time with a mask and cap and instructions on holding and diapering a baby. Each child should bring a doll or stuffed animal to use in the class. Enrollment is limited, so register early. Breastfeeding Learn more about breastfeeding from internationally board- certified lactation consultants. This class provides important information about breastfeeding, including positioning baby properly, ensuring that baby is learning to latch on correctly and recognizing whether or not baby is getting enough breastmilk. Fathers are strongly encouraged to attend. The class is especially helpful for: • first-time moms and dads. • those who previously had a negative breastfeeding experience. • mothers with flat, inverted, short or large nipples. • mothers with very large or small breasts. • those expecting multiples. • mothers at high risk (pre-eclampsia, known fetal abnormality, etc.). • mothers who have had breast surgery (reduction, augmentation, trauma, etc.). • parents who want to better understand the benefits of breastfeeding and its challenges. Childbirth & Newborn Care Childbirth classes are taught by qualified instructors to prepare you for delivery. We recommend all first-time parents take this three-session series or the full-day Saturday class. This class answers many questions about your hospital stay and includes a tour of the Childbirth Suites. Instructors will discuss the entire childbirth process, including vaginal, cesarean and assisted- delivery procedures, as well as the phases of labor and stages of delivery and recovery. Other topics include coping skills, basic breathing techniques and pain management options. Newborn care and what to expect during the first few weeks at home is also included. Demonstrations and videos explain how to hold, soothe, diaper, bathe and feed baby. Topics such as when to call the doctor, how to tell if baby is sick and what to do when baby cries are also covered. Family-Shared Birthing This class is by appointment. Parents may have older children present for delivery with prior approval from the attending physician and if the child: • is 6 years old or older and accompanied by a support person (other than mother’s coach) if younger than 14. • participated in the Family-Shared Birthing Class with his or her support person. The class lasts one to two hours, depending on the child’s needs. Infant CPR & Safety One of the most exciting and challenging aspects of parenthood is being entrusted with the health and well-being of your baby. The American Heart Association CPR for Family and Friends course teaches choking management, recommendations for child proofing the home and basic car seat safety. Relaxation & More! This informative class is recommended as a follow up to childbirth classes. It focuses on relaxation techniques designed to help prepare each expectant mother mentally, emotionally and physically for labor. Expectant mothers and their partners discuss and practice comfort measures, including massage and touch therapy, breathing exercises and coach/mother communication skills, in an intimate, casual setting. Because each labor and delivery is unique, partners learn a “whole body” approach to the childbirth experience. This three-hour class strongly supports a natural delivery and is ideal for those seeking an alternative to traditional childbirth. However, the class is also extremely beneficial to parents anticipating an epidural or other pain management options. Participants need to allow adequate time to take the class and then practice the skills learned prior to the onset of labor. Tours are not included with this class but can be scheduled separately. BreastfeedingLearn more about breastfeeding from internationally board-certified lactation consultants. This class provides important information about breastfeeding, including positioning baby properly, ensuring that baby is learning to latch on correctly and recognizing whether or not baby is getting enough breastmilk. Fathers are strongly encouraged to attend.

The class is especially helpful for:

• first-time moms and dads.

Infant CPR & SafetyOne of the most exciting and challenging aspects of parenthood is being entrusted with the health and well-being of your baby.
