Param Vir Chakra

• Highest decoration for valour awarded for “the most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence of the enemy whether on land, at sea or in the air”, similar to the British Victoria Cross, US Medal of Honor.

• Officers, men and women of all ranks of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, of any of the Reserve Forces, of the Territorial Army Militia and of any other lawfully constituted Armed Forces.

• Till date India has fought 4 wars where 21 soldiers got this medal of which 14 are posthumous.

a recognized police force, the Central Intelligence Bureau, or an organized fire service who have performed services of conspicuous gallantry.

SENA MEDAL• The Sena Medal is awarded to members of

the Indian army, of all ranks, "for such individual acts of exceptional devotion to duty or courage as have special significance for the Army." Awards may be made posthumously and a bar is authorized for subsequent awards of the Sena Medal.

• This medal is awarded for gallantry. However, the Sena Medal (Distinguished) is given for distinguished service carried out by any soldier, not in the face of the enemy.

• This Award has been classified into two categories. One is Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) and the other Vayu Sena Medal (Devotion to Duty).

• Awarded for a high degree of distinguished services in an operational context.

• In many ways, this is an operational version of the Vishisht Seva Medal which, since 1980, has been restricted to non-operational awards.

PVSM,AVSM & VSM

• These awards were given in recognition to service rendered in administrative or operational capacities during peacetime. Unlike the Gallantry Awards which were awarded in most cases for specific incidents of gallantry, the Service awards cannot be given for individual and specific incidents. They can be given more in line with countinous and sustained effort in their service.

PVSM• Param Vishisht Seva Medal (or PVSM) is

a military award of India given to recognize "distinguished service of most exceptional order" to all ranks of the armed forces.

• The award may be granted posthumously and subsequent awards are represented by a bar worn on the ribbon.

• The award carries with it the right to use “PVSM" as post-nominal letters.

AVSM

• Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (or AVSM) is a military award of India given to recognize "distinguished service of an exceptional order" to all ranks of the armed forces.

• The award can also be granted posthumously. Subsequent awards are represented by a bar worn on the ribbon. The awardee can use "AVSM" as post-nominal letters.

• The Ati Vishisht Seva Medal was originally established as the "Vishisht Seva Medal, Class II".

VSM• Vishisht Seva Medal (or VSM)

• The award may be granted posthumously and subsequent awards are represented by a bar worn on the ribbon. The award carries with it the right to use "VSM" as post-nominal letters

All Police personnel in the country with at least 15 years of Meritorious service are eligible for this award.

PRESIDENT’S POLICE MEDAL FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE

• All police personnel in the country with at least 21 years of service are eligible for this award.

• Prolonged service, but only when distinguished by very exceptional ability and merit.

• Must have put in 5 years after being awarded with President Police Medal for Meritorious service.

PRAKRAM PADAK(Earlier Known as Wound medal)

• It is specifically awarded to those who sustain ‘wounds as a result of direct enemy action in any type of operations or counter-insurgency actions’ in Andhra Pradesh,Assam,Bihar,J&K,Arunanchal Pradesh,Manipur,Mizoram,Nagaland & Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, MP, Maharashtra,UP,, Orrisa,west Bengal.

• May be awarded to any arm of the military, police or civil defence forces. It may not be awarded posthumously.

• A Gallantry Medal Awardee if in the course of duties in the specified areas is wounded he/she shall be eligible for this medal.

OPS PARAKRAM MEDAL

• All ranks of the Para Military Forces, Central Police Forces, Railway Protection Force, J&K State Police Forces, Home Guards, civil defence organization and any other organization as specified by Government who were deployed in operational areas under Army's operational control or any other personnel of such organization deployed in areas as may be specified by the Government, who assisting in implementing coordination and conduct etc of operation.

• A person who has completed aggregate service of 180 days in qualifying area. The qualifying period for the Medal extends from 14 Dec 2001 to 18 Dec 2003 (and to 31 March 2004 for those engaged in demining ops).

SAMANYA SEVA (GENERAL DUTY)• The medal was authorised on 8

May 1975 (but with effect from 26 January 1965) to replace the General Service medal of 1950 and to be awarded for actions where no specific campaign medal was issued, specific actions being denoted by a clasp.

• All ranks of the Army, and of the Reserve, Territorial and militia forces, and civilians are entitled for this award.

SAINYA SEVA MEDAL• Awarded in recognition of non-

operational services under conditions of special hardship and severe climate.

• A person who is awarded a gallantry decoration or who dies on service or is evacuated as a result of wounds or other disabilities attributable to service in any of the areas specified in the course of his service in any of the areas specified will be eligible for this award.

• It will have clasps Jammu & Kashmir, NEFA, Himalaya, Andaman and Nicobar and Bengal-Assam.

SAMAR SEVA MEDAL-1965

• The Star was instituted on 11 February 1967 and awarded for active service during the war with Pakistan of 1965.

RAKSHA MEDAL• The medal was instituted by

the President of India on 26 January 1967 to be awarded for active service in the war with Pakistan that took place in August and September 1965, mainly in Jammu Kashmir.

• AWARDED TO ANYONE QUALIFYING FOR “SAMAR SEVA MEDAL”.

VISHESH SEWA MEDAL (SPL SERVICE MEDAL)

• Instituted to recognize special services by the Indian military which could not easily be recognized by existing medals.

• Srilanka - For "Operation Pawan," peacekeeping service in northern and eastern Sri Lanka, 1987-90, as apart of the Indian Peacekeeping Force (IPKF). Awarded to army, navy, and air force personnel for services in Sri Lanka.

• Rakshak - Awarded for security service in the Punjab, in Jammu and Kashmir, and in the northeastern areas of India. As far as service in the Punjab is concerned (and especially with regard to "Operation Bluestar"), this bar replaces the Punjab Ribbon.

OPERATION VIJAY MEDAL

• The medal was instituted by the President of India on 20 August 2001 to be awarded to those involved in Operation Vijay between 1 May 1999 and 31 January 2000.

• The “Vijay Stambh” (Victory Tower) shown on the reverse is at Chittaurgarh Fort in Rajasthan.

• Also awarded to Paramilitary and police who were under military orders.

OPS VIJAY STAR• Awarded to all personnel of the following

forces who participated in operations in and around Kargil on the ground, or in the air.

• The minimum qualifying service shall be one day in the Battle Zone/Air Fields or one operational sortie or a total of three flying hours as members of a crew in the Battle zone:-

• All ranks of the Para Military Force, Central Police Organizations and Police Forces which participated in operations under the command of the Army or in support of the Army in OP VIJAY.

SIACHEN GLACIER MEDAL• The medal was instituted on

17 July 1984 and awarded to both army and air force personnel and auxiliary forces for combat service in the initial conflict with Pakistan between 12 and 18 April 1984 and also for 30 days’ subsequent service in the area (this time limit being waived for those earning a gallantry award or mention in despatches or those killed or wounded in the area).

PASCHIMI STAR

• The Star was instituted shortly after the war with Pakistan that took place from 3 to 16 December 1971.

• Awarded for active service on the front with Western Pakistan.

SANGRAM MEDAL • Awarded for service during the

1971/72 war with Pakistan. • The medal could be given to all

categories of personnel who served in the military, paramilitary forces, police, and civilians in service in the operational areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, or Tripura between 3 December 1971 and 20 December 1972 (both dates inclusive).

UCCHH TUNGTA MEDAL (HIGH ALTITUDE MEDAL)

Personnel who have been detailed for duties connected with the defence of the borders and who have completed an aggregate service of 180 days during first spell of tenure on the active strength of a unit/formation in the areas where high altitude allowance is admissible commencing from 1st April, 1984.

POLICE (SPECIAL DUTY) MEDAL- 1962• Instituted through president sectt. Notification

No.29-Pres./62 dated 23.2.1962• Awarded to police personnel for service in harsh

climatic conditions.• Those who have completed an aggregate of one

year's service after 1St Jan., 1959, will be awarded the medal.

• The First Bar to the Medal will be awarded after a continuous service of two years.

• The second Bar to the Medal will be awarded after an additional aggregate service of 5 years subject to the condition that the maximum number of Bars to be awarded to each eligible person will not be more than two.

WEARING OF MEDALS:Wearing Of Medals Ribands 1. Full medals Will be worn on all ceremonial occasions

with shirt terry cotton or tunic. 2. Medal senior in order of precedence will be worn on

the right side and all other medals will be placed so on.3. While putting on ribands not more than 4 ribands to be

worn in one line.4. Ribands are worn on all occasions when wearing

uniform, except when wearing the following:- (i) Over garments (jersey pullover) (ii) Combat dress. (iii) Full medals or miniature medals.
