Prepare Yourself A Message from Rabbi Zahtz

Which of Avraham’s ten tests was the most challenging? Clearly, the test of the being asked to ,עקדהslaughter his only son immediately after Hashem promised him

he would become a large nation, was the most difficult. We can’t even fathom such a difficult test. Yet, listen to the words of the מדרש:

אמ ר רבי לוי, שני פעמים כתוב לך לך, אין אנו

ה או השניה. מן יודעים איזו חביבה, אם הראשונ

מה דכתיב אל ארץ מוריה, הוי שניה חביבה מן

הראשונה.

The term לך appears twice, at the לך beginning of our parsha when Avraham is told to leave his homeland and his family to travel to the land G-d will show him and also when Hashem commands Avraham to take Yitzchak to the עקדה. The מדרש

continues that the common language seems to imply a comparison between them and we don’t know which one is greater, more beloved to Hashem. Do we really not know which one is more beloved? How can the two even be compared? To be honest, in the end the מדרש says

that the nisayon of the עקדה was the greatest and most beloved as we would have guessed; however, not for the reasons we said. Rather, the מדרש says

cryptically, because regarding the עקדה it

says מוריה אל ארץ .

I think the challenge of the עקדה is clear to us, but let’s try and delve deeply into the nisayon of לך לך to better understand the nisayon and this enigmatic statement of .חז"ל

Hashem says to Avraham Avinu לך לך

מארצך וממולדתך ומבית אביך אל הארץ אשר אראך

you should go from your land, your hometown and your father’s house and travel to the land I will show you. What was specifically being asked of Avraham Avinu? Oftentimes people need to relocate, for work, health or other reasons, what was unique- what was the challenge of Avraham Avinu? Avraham was being told to forget everything he learned in his father’s home, not only to separate physically from the land, and to disassociate spiritually and psychologically from the land of his youth. And it wasn’t just his youth; Avraham was 75 years old! Communi-Tea Time Planned For Rabbi Schrier and CBY Members

Since joining us at the beginning of August, Rabbi Schrier has repeatedly expressed his deep commitment to developing a meaningful relationship with each and every Bnai Yeshurun family. Over the past two months, there have been multiple “meet and greet” opportunities and one can see those relationships beginning to form. This coming week, Rabbi Schrier will launch his newest initiative to connect personally with each of our members.

Starting this week, the rabbi will be scheduling one-on-one, twenty-minute sessions (consider that we have nearly 600 member families) with each Bnai Yeshurun household. There will be a wide variety of available time slots and you can schedule a meeting that is most convenient for you via the shul’s website, by visiting, www.bnaiyeshurun.org/events.

The format is open. You can come with your questions and issues and the rabbi will likely have his. You can bring your children, especially your older ones, if you so choose or the sessions can literally be “one on one.” Consistent with the “Communi-Tea” appellation, beverages will be provided. (And don’t complain about the name; they also considered “Schrierside Chats!”)

Please note the Township of Teaneck has reinstated a No Parking zone along the western side of Jefferson Street from Maitland Avenue through Ogden Avenue. We recognize there is a great challenge in finding parking near shul. We implore everyone coming to CBY to be cognizant of where you are parking; obey all parking regulations & be courteous of the shul's

neighbors & never block their driveways. Additionally, please remember to wear reflective materials & walk on the correct side of the street when walking to shul when it is dark.

What a difficult challenge, to make real, permanent life-altering changes. We know how difficult changes can be, and certainly changes that incorporate uprooting part of your personality Rav Levi in this מדרש contrasts this נסיון, challenge, with that of the was a very different challenge, it was a challenge ,עקדה The .עקדהto rise to the occasion, to a defined particular moment. Will he, Avraham, have the courage and faith to rise to this specific exceedingly difficult challenge? This in fact is the contrast Chazal are making, Avraham had two difficult but very different challenges. There was the single dramatic event of the עקדה and there was the נסיון, of making personal changes, uprooting everything learned in the past, and living every day, from now on differently. So, which is the greater, more beloved challenge? The מדרש says the עקדה, why? Because the pasuk says לך לך אל ארץ

?How does that indicate which is greater .מוריהPerhaps what Rav Levi is teaching us in this מדרש is that the עקדה is greater because Hashem told him the destination, it wasn’t a sudden response of heroism, but rather it was the culmination of all of his nisyonos, the only way for Avraham to rise to the occasion of knowingly going to the עקדה is by preparing himself, by forgetting his past life and beginning anew with full dedication to Hashem. Avraham has taught us, that to rise for an occasion such as the the most important thing is all the preparations we do on a עקדהdaily basis. We don’t prepare for the challenges, but the Torah we learn, the תפלות we pray, the חסד we perform, the faith we believe and strengthen are the most fundamental ingredients in dealing properly with anything that may come our way. Some people wait for the moments to be in the spotlight to be the hero, the lesson of Avraham is that a much harder test and the one for which we are responsible is to prepare ourselves as much as possible, to become close to Hashem, and when a moment of challenge arrives, we’ll travel on the path Avraham charted for us beginning with his journey from Charan and ending with the עקדה, and rise to the occasion and thereby sanctify the name of G-d.

Lech Lecha in “Hashtag” Form

• HaShem commanded “Avram,” #sic, to leave his hometown and to travel to a secret land, to #TheGreatUnknown. As a reward, HaShem promised to make Avram’s descendants into a great nation. #LotsaPeople #AbrahamicCrew #Legit.

• And #OffHeWent, with wife Sarai and nephew Lot in tow. Avram arrived in Canaan and walked throughout the entire land, thus acquiring it. #CanSomeoneCallMeAnUber #OyMyKnees #LoveThatLand #BabaBasra100a

• Unfortunately, famine struck, forcing Avram to go down to Mitzrayim. #Ewww. #AvramInDeNile. Since Sarai was the #FairestInAllTheLand, Avram referred to Sarai as his sister, in order to save his own life. #SheBeMySista.

• Pharaoh liked Sarai a lot and wanted to marry her, so he kinda took her captive. #SayWhaaa? #NotCool. HaShem wasn’t too happy about this, so He brought a plague onto Pharaoh's house. #ThingsJustGotSerious. #Don’tMess. Pharaoh apologized, sent Sarai back to Avram, and gave them loads of riches. #SweetDeal. #AllsWellThatEndsWell. #UntilNextTime.

• Avram’s #crew headed back to the Holy Land. #HolyHummus. The shepherds of Avram and Lot got into an argument, so the two #split and went in opposite directions. #SayonaraLot. Lot and Co went to Sodom, #PoorChoice. HaShem tells Avram that his descendants will be #LikeTheDustOfTheEarth.

• When the four kings fought against the five kings, Lot was captured. #Karma. Avram and a handful of volunteers traveled to the battlefield and single handedly defeated the enemy armies, they saved Lot and the rest of Sodom. #HERO. #AboveAndBeyond. #NoOneLeftBehind.

• HaShem promised Avram that he would have children and that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars. #Sparkly. We then witness the Brit Bein HaBetarim, where HaShem and Avram walk through a bunch of animals, and HaShem shows Avram the future of the Jewish people. We are #InThisForTheLongRun.

• Hagar became pregnant before Sarai, #UhOh, prompting a feud between the two. Hagar ran away, then an angel of HaShem convinced her to return. Hagar gave birth to Yishmael, HaShem changed Avram’s name to Avraham. #HehYou #DatHehLife

• HaShem changed Sarai’s name to Sarah, HaShem promises Avraham, #sic, another son, Avraham gets a Brit Milah at 99. #MazalTov #OfSimchas #OnlySimchas

A Mini-Vort from the Szafranski Table to Yours!

The גמרא in השנה ראש on טז: lists a number of different actions which can help rip up a person's individual evil decree, דין גזר ; some of which were learned from Avraham and Sarah. For example, changing one's location (“ לך לך ”) and changing one's name (אברהם <--אברם) can

both help rip a person's דין גזר .

Sometimes we feel stuck in a rut and feel that it is impossible to avoid a specific destiny. The Torah teaches us that it is ALWAYS possible to change our fate and come closer to HaShem. Sometimes all we need to do is change our location or name, our perspective, and the rest will fall into place.

We are all in this Together: A Communal Response to the Opioid Epidemic . Our nation is currently battling an epidemic. Last year, our country tragically experienced the highest number of overdose deaths ever recorded, with over 90,000 individuals losing their lives. While some may like to think of this problem as unconnected to our communities, it is not. We are all affected by the Opioid Epidemic. Addiction does not discriminate; it can affect anyone. Which is why as parents, teachers, rabbis, siblings, Jewish leaders, students, mental health professionals, and community members…we are all responsible for learning what we can do to continue combating addiction on all fronts. Join us for an upcoming free virtual event and workshop taking place Sunday, October 24 at 10:00 am (ET) in which we can all learn what we can do to help. One life lost to this disease is one too many. Registration is required and can be found here. For more information, reach out to [email protected]

Preparations have begun for the 29th Annual Bergen County

Chanukah Toy Drive! We are gearing up for the 29th Bergen County Annual Chanukah Toy Drive. Please let us know if you can still host the toy drive this year and if there are any changes or additions that you'd like to add in terms of location drop off or volunteers. As Chanukah is early this year, the Drive will officially start on Monday, November 1st and the official end date will be November 15th. You are, of course, invited to start the drive as early as you see fit for your institution and we encourage starting to advertise the week before the start date. *And while our official deadline will be November 15th (because some charities pick up as early as November 16th), we encourage you to keep the collection bins open until Chanukah. Since some organizations pick up later, we can accept extra donations after the official deadline and through Chanukah. As always, if your institution can make a few periodic drop-offs as the toys come in (as opposed to one big drop off at the end), it would be much appreciated so that we have enough toys for the early pick-ups. The central drop-off location will continue to be 95 Norfolk St., Bergenfield, NJ 07621 (side of the house/garage entrance) and the phone contact when dropping off is the same as well; Joy Sklar, 551-404-0227 (Please let Joy know when you are dropping off, especially if rain is predicted).
