How the role of the HPS was established

1985 : The unit was established at Nottingham City

Hospital

The vision: A multi professional team supporting children and young

people living with kidney disease and their families

This team was to consist of:

• Nephrologists

• Specialist Nurses

• Dietician

• Social worker

• Psychologist

The introduction of the Play Specialist

1989 :Play Specialist were in post in other areas of children's

care at QMC campus to help prepare and support patients

• The unit at City Campus recognised the need for play and the

role was established within the renal unit as part of the

psychosocial team

• It was felt the Play could help alleviate the trauma of treatment

and procedures for those children with Chronic Renal Failure

Nottingham Paediatric Renal Services have offered almost 30 years

of Play support for our patients and families

In 1993: The unit worked together to develop a Painful procedures

Booklet and video.

Highlighting the Importance of using numbing cream and sprays , as

well as the use of distraction

This Changed the way in which doctors and nurses worked -

• Procedures with little notice • No preparation • No plans for distraction

• Planned procedures • Time to build relationships • Preparation • Plans for distraction
