1 History of Bronco Baseball

PREFACE

The following pages represent the first sixty-six years (1954 season through the

2019 season) of International Falls High School baseball history. It is hoped that former

players, fans, and friends of Bronco baseball will reflect back on the pleasant memories of

past associations and past games.

Our thanks to all who have helped us to compile the scores and insights of the

baseball games over the years. A special thank you to the staff at the International Falls

Public Library. Charlie Anderson and Timm Ringhofer 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 2017, 2018, 2019

2 History of Bronco Baseball

INTRODUCTION

The high school baseball program in International Falls began in 1954. Games

were played at Athletic Park which was located where the present day Woodland

Apartments are located. Tom Bergstedt (1954-1956) was the first coach of the high

school program and guided the Bronco baseball program for 3 seasons. The Broncos

went to the state tournament in 1955 in only the second season as a high school team as

they completed an undefeated regular season. The Broncos won the District 27 regular

season championship, the District 27 tournament, and the Region 7 tournament by

shutting out both Hibbing and Duluth Denfeld. At the state tournament, the Broncos took

sixth place by winning one and losing two games.

In the 1950’s, District 27 consisted of International Falls, Aurora, Babbitt, Biwabik,

Ely, Eveleth, Gilbert, Mountain Iron, Tower-Soudan, and Virginia.

Walt Scheela (1957-1961) became the second baseball coach of the Bronco

baseball team in 1957. Scheela’s first season at the helm was a successful one as the

Broncos returned to the state tournament by again winning the Region 7 tournament.

The Broncos also won the District 27 regular season championship and District 27

tournament championship following the same route as the 1955 Broncos. Scheela

continued as coach for the Broncos for the next four seasons. The Broncos were never

under the .500 mark with Scheela as coach.

In 1962, Joe Taschuk (1962-1966) was selected as the third baseball coach for

International Falls. The first four seasons under Taschuk were up and down, but in 1966,

the Broncos returned to the state tournament for the third time in the history of the

program. Many of the athletes that were making the historic run through the state in

hockey were part of the successful season guided by Taschuk. The Broncos won the

District 27 and Region 7 tournaments on their way to the state tournament and took sixth

place.

Following the 1966 season, Joe Taschuk was replaced by Tony Miller (1967-

1993). Miller coaching tenure is the longest in Bronco baseball history, 27 years. Early in

Miller’s coaching stint, the Broncos began playing at the current Scheela Field located

behind Falls High School. This occurred in 1971 after the Broncos had played their entire

1969 and 1970 seasons on the road. The field was named for long time athletic director

3 History of Bronco Baseball

at Falls High School, Walt Scheela, and the naming and dedication occurred prior to the

1980 season. In 1976, the Minnesota State High School League divided baseball into

two classes, A and AA. International Falls was placed in Sub-Region 4 which was part of

Region 7AA. With the move to two classes, the Broncos were no longer part of District 27

and the conference they began to play in was the Iron Range Conference. The Broncos

played in Sub-Region 4 for nine seasons and were runner-ups in the tournament six

times, losing to Grand Rapids each time. From 1985-1991, International Falls was part of

the North Sub-Region or North Sub-Section of Region or Section 7AA. In 1992, the

Broncos moved down to Section 7A because of declining enrollment. The Broncos were

also placed in Sub-Section 3 of the section which would essentially become the

Arrowhead Conference in the following seasons. Teams included in the sub-

section/conference at various times through the succeeding years included: AlBrook,

Babbitt-Embarrass-Soudan-Tower, Cherry, Cook, Cook-Orr, Cotton, Ely, Eveleth-Gilbert,

Mesabi East, and Mountain Iron-Buhl.

In 1994, Steve Shermoen (1994-1996) took over as coach of the Broncos.

Shermoen became the fifth coach in the history of the program and the first not be a

faculty member. International Falls enjoyed three seasons under Shermoen’s command

with three Arrowhead Conference championships. In 1995, the Broncos returned to the

state tournament for the first time since 1966 by winning the Region 7A tournament, and

this trip to state was the fourth overall for the Bronco baseball program. The Broncos won

two games and lost one at the state tournament and won the consolation championship.

Kevin Dowty (1997-1999) was the sixth baseball coach for International Falls High

School. The Broncos had three successful seasons with Dowty as head coach, and a

rarity occurred during Dowty’s tenure. In the 1999 season, the Broncos played Deer

River in the Metrodome and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The second non-faculty member was named head coach at the start of the 2000

season. Vic Heinlen (2000-2012) had been a long-time volunteer assistant and became

the seventh coach in program history. Heinlen took over a program that had six

consecutive winning seasons. In 2000, the Minnesota State High School League changed

baseball from two classes to three classes. The Broncos were placed in the Section 7AA.

In 2001, the Broncos made it all the way to the section final before losing to Hermantown.

The Broncos again played to a tie with Chisholm during the 2004 season with the game

4 History of Bronco Baseball

ending with a score of 5-5. The 2008 season saw the Broncos win their fourth Arrowhead

Conference championship and first since 1996. During the 2011 season, the Bronco

baseball program reached the 500-win plateau as the Broncos defeated Eveleth-Gilbert.

Starting with the 2012 season, Littlefork-Big Falls was added as a new member of the

Arrowhead Conference as Cook-Orr became North Woods and Babbitt-Embarrass-

Soudan-Tower became Northeast Range. Also, new bats that react more like wood bats

and greatly reduced the speed of the ball coming of the bat were introduced at the high

school level.

The third non-faculty member was named head coach at the start of the 2013

season. Eric Walls (2013-2019) had been an assistant coach and became the eighth

coach in the history of the Broncos’ program. During the 2013 season, the Broncos

played their 1000th game in program history in a loss to Virginia in the season opener.

Also during the season, International Falls won their fifth Arrowhead Conference

championship. The playoffs statewide were altered so that the double elimination portion

would start once the section had eight teams remaining rather than four teams. The

Broncos advanced to their first section final since 2001 before losing to Hermantown in

the second championship game. With the start of the 2016 season, the MSHSL changed

from three to four classes in baseball. International Falls remained in Section 7AA with

the new classification. The Broncos won the Arrowhead Conference championship, their

sixth, in 2016. In 2018, the Falls made it out of the first round elimination game in the

Section 7AA tournament for the first time since 2013 and played into the final six teams in

the tournament.

The Bronco baseball program has seen many changes since its inception in 1954.

There have been the changes from one to two to three to four classes statewide. The

Broncos have been part of the District 27 Conference, Iron Range Conference, and the

Arrowhead Conference. They were part of Class AA then Class A and then back to Class

AA. There have been a total of eight coaches. The 2019 season brought to a close the

first sixty-six seasons of Bronco baseball.
