Significance ● In the ancient days, sky lanterns were invented for military purposes. The

inventor Zhuge Liang (181–234 AD) who was also called Kongming used a message written on a sky lantern to summon help on an occasion when he was surrounded by enemy troops.

● In the modern days, the rising of sky lanterns symbolises the way to the heaven.

● People write their wishes and prayers with marker or pen on the lanterns and release them to the heaven to ask god for happiness, safety, good future, lover or babies.

● Lovers release sky lanterns together to express their love and enhance their relationship.

● When outing with friends or family, it is an unforgettable memory to watch the flying of hundreds of sky lanterns which are like shining stars in the dark sky, and see your dreams and wishes flying towards the stars.

How would weather element affect the movement of the sky lanterns?

Slight breeze weatherIf there is a slight breeze, the direction the sky lanterns travel will be affected One should ensure that when launched, the sky lanterns do not fly towards buildings, trees, airports, roads or any area they may pose a danger.

Dry weatherWhen the weather is dry , the blaze of the lantern might cause forest fires AS a result the use of sky lanterns should be banned during prolonged periods of dry weather.

Rainy weatherThe rain will make the sky lantern very heavy, affecting the way it will fly. Heavy raining will eventually tear through the biodegradable material, causing the sky lantern to extinguish and fall prematurely to earth.
