The Certificate of Professional De-velopment in Best Practices for Online Course Design is offered to faculty cohorts throughout the year and is designed to support instruc-tors as they integrate technologies in their courses to improve instruction and provide students with highly en-gaging learning experiences as well as flexible scheduling.

At this meeting the cohort will deter-mine the time for the 2-hour sessions throughout Spring 2017 semester to complete the certificate. Please register at https://tamucc.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5yzfLhku5PF8joV to receive in-formation and updates. More infor-mation at the ODELT’s page https://iol.tamucc.edu/certificates.html.

The Blackboard Mobile Learn app allows easy and convenient access to courses on mobile de-vices. However, the mobile app is not meant to replace the Blackboard environment, so it’s important to know the limitations. Students are discouraged from taking quizzes us-ing the app because certain question types such as Essay or Calculated Formula are not supported. On the other hand, viewing, and posting replies and comments to discussions, blogs, and journals is a great way to use the app.

The capability to at-tach documents is limited. Push notifica-tions is a popular fea-ture as it provides pop up notifications on a device when an-

nouncements or content items are posted, or items are graded. The app also sends test availability, due dates, and overdue notices. For more information, visit the website: https://en-us.help.blackboard.com/Mobile_Learn/Features. The Black-board Mobile Learn app is nested in the Islander Mobile app. More infor-mation is available at this website: http://tamucc.edu/mobile/islander_mobile.html.

Civility Module Available in Professional Development Bb Course. Incidents of incivility in both online and face-face courses have been reported. As a result, Glenn Blalock and ODELT were asked to develop interventions to facilitate civility. They are still planning, but for now have created a “Civility” menu item in the “Pro_dev_resources” course in which most faculty are enrolled. The only folders with content at this time are “Creating Civil Learning Environments” and “Resources.” Hopefully these will help. If you have resources to add to “Civility,” or would like to enroll, let Lauren Cifuentes know at 5709.

The first meeting of the Spring 2017 cohort will take place on January 17, 2017 in CCH 113, from 8:00am to 5:00pm to complete the first day of the Certificate in Online Course Development, Teaching, and Review workshops that is required for all new faculty.

A new version of Camtasia Studio will be available in January 2017 for both Mac and PC. This version, titled Camtasia Studio 9, features an up-dated and easier to navigate inter-face. This interface upgrade is more uniform in design across Mac and PC compared to the previous release. Projects created on the Mac version will now work with PC and vice ver-sa. Camtasia Studio 9 also introduc-es faster processing so that videos can be rendered quickly and overall stability is improved. For more infor-mation and new tutorials on the new release, please see https://iol.tamucc.edu/. Beginning January 2nd, for security purposes, all WebEx meetings will require the host to create or generate a 5-digit long passcode when setting up a meeting. In addition to this change the “call me” feature has been disabled. For more information or clarification, please contact the IT Help Desk.

A Blackboard and IT Resources workshop is held at the beginning of each semester. This semester the workshop will be offered 5 times. The 90-minute workshop provides an overview of IT resources, Black-board navigation and hands-on ac-tivities using tools such as the dis-cussion forum, wikis, blogs, journals, and quizzes. Workshops are also available online using WebEx. For a complete sched-ule go to https://iol.tamucc.edu/student_workshops.html. During the next couple of months, the "Add Test Student" feature in Blackboard Learn will be phased out. Please begin using the "Student Preview" feature that is integrated into your Blackboard Learn course. To learn more about "Student Pre-view" visit: https://en-us.help.blackboard.com/Learn/Instructor/Courses/Student_Preview.

New Communication Tool Enables Real-time Collaboration The IT-Telecommunications group will be making Cisco Jabber available to all TAMUCC Faculty/Staff in 2017. As we get closer to the release date, expect more details and a committed date.

New Recruitment System Enhances Capabilities TargetX will replace the current recruitment system and help Admissions develop and implement a comprehensive, integrative, data-driven recruitment plan to attract graduate and undergraduate students committed to learning. The new system will leverage current technology and facilitate communication with perspective TAMUCC students. The system is targeted to go-live early January.

In order to enhance the computing

    experience and to provide improved

    security for the Macintosh platform,

TAMU-CC IT will be rolling out

    LANrev to all Apple Comput-

    ers. LANrev is systems-lifecycle-

    management software used by sys-

    tem administrators to automate IT

    administration tasks. TAMU-CC IT

will be using LANrev to manage

    software and image delivery, patch

    management, asset management,

    and encryption for Macs.

One of the U.S. Department of Edu-

    cation’s regulations regarding dis-

    tance learning emphasizes that

    online courses include interaction.

    The elements the department re-

    quires for such interaction follow.

    Interaction must be—

    1. initiated by the instructor. 2. “regular” and somewhat fre-

    quent.

    3. “substantive” and of an aca-demic nature.

    4. with an instructor that meets accrediting agency standards (a content expert).

    While definitions

    of terms above

    may be vague,

    ODELT encour-

    ages instructors to

    interact with all of

    your students weekly via emails,

    messages, and/or videoconferences

    to provide feedback regarding the

    quality of students’ submissions and

to provide guidance in the form of

    questions, examples/non-examples,

    clarification, hints, and redirection.

    A Blackboard tool, Goal

    Performance and Align-

    ment, helps instructors

    align academic program

    competencies with course activities

    and corresponding assessments.

    The Blackboard Goals Performance

    and Alignment tool assures content

    coverage within programs, provides

    performance data on student pro-

    gress against standards, documents

    holistic measurement of students’

    mastery, and helps in supporting

    remediation and retention efforts

    based on student performance. The

    tool generates two different types

    of course reports.

    Student Performance Reports pro-

    vide a student-centric view measur-

ing how a particular student has

    performed against stated goals.

    Student Performance Reports gage

    students’ progress through their

    degree program and courses.

    Course Performance Reports pro-

vide a goal centric view that shows

    all student performance against a

    particular goal. Course performance

reports can be used as course evalu-

    ation measures. The generated re-

    ports indicate learners’ proficiency

and mastery of skills. Mastery re-

ports can be complied to determine

    success of programs at meeting

    standards.

Article in TechTrends. Lauren Cifuentes, Alexandra Janney, and Lauran Guerra of the Office of Distance Education and Learning Technologies along with Jennifer Weir of Disability Services have published an article in TechTrends. The article, ti-tled “A Working Model for Complying with Accessibility Guidelines for Online Learning” describes the two offices efforts to systematically and systemically ad-dress accessibility concerns for online learning in order to comply with ethical prin-ciples, best practices, and laws. The model described in the article includes three overarching continuous tasks: strategically monitoring campus needs and re-sources, building a supportive infrastructure, and evaluating outcomes. The article can be found here: http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11528-016-0086-8 .

The Office of Distance Education and Learning Technologies (ODELT) hosted several events to celebrate National Distance Learning Week (NDLW) in No-vember. Prizes and awards were presented to both students and faculty. The "I eLearning" Twitter contest for students promoted social media en-gagement with the campus. Three winners were drawn from the pool of par-ticipants and received $10 on their Sanddollar$ cards. The winners were :

Javier Arredondo, Samantha Hernandez, and Wanda Ziehr.

In addition, Outstanding Online Student awards were presented to celebrate the accomplishments of distance education students. Winners included

Jeremiah Brauhn, College of Education and Human Development; Laura Carbajal, College of Science and Engineering; and Kari LeBret-Harris and

Okiemute (Kitay) Diejomaoh, College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Students receiving the award were nominated by faculty. A $25 Amazon gift card was mailed to each winner. The 3rd annual Outstanding Online Educator awards ceremony and reception was also held during NDLW to honor faculty from each of the five colleges:

    Dr. Jason Saladiner, College of Nursing and Health Sciences; Dr. Susan Elwood, College of Education; Dr. Randall Harris, College of Business; Dr. Dan Sipes, College of Liberal Arts;

Ms. Seneca Holland, College of Science and Engineering.

When ODELT wanted to improve the

social media strategies for their office,

    a unique opportunity appeared. Dr.

    Monica Hernandez, Associate Profes-

sor of Marketing, was planning to cre-

    ate a social media

    marketing as-

    signment in her

    online Marketing

    Seminar class.

    To satisfy the

    course require-

    ment in a real

    world environment, the class focused

    their project on ODELT. “Specifically,

the project will require them to write a

    case study about ODELT” Hernandez

said. “The introduction to the project

will require them to describe its pur-

pose, history and current state of social

    media marketing efforts.” Hernandez

set up a discussion forum in Black-

board and invited ODELT staff to par-

    ticipate.

Students could ask questions about the

office and goals for their social media

    efforts. Once the students gathered

the information, their final project was

to create the social media strategic

plan. ODELT was delighted with the

opportunity for the office staff to col-

laborate directly with students on the

project. Thanks go to Jan Brott for tak-

ing the lead on communicating ODELT

needs and collaborating with Dr. Her-

    nandez’ students. The best projects

will be selected by Dr. Hernandez and

presented to ODELT in January 2017.
