• It includes– Middle age – 1066 - 1485– Tudor and Stuart periods – 1485 - 1714– Hanoverian period – 1714 – 1790

Task: in small groups think of something you know about each period

• Most of the population of Britain lived in rural areas.

• Sport did not cross class barriers in terms of participation and spectating.

• Society was split into 3 specific groupsTask: list the 3 groups, discuss their role in society

1. For functional reasons:• To prepare men to defend their country.• Archery and hunting for the nobility

2. For cultural reasons:• Christianity became more widespread• Pagan festivals replaced by ‘holy days’• Holidays included Easter, Shrove Tuesday and

Ash Wednesday • These would involve sport – folk football,

wrestling, skittles and bowls.

• London the only recognised city• 10 % of people lived in town• Main source of income still farming• Society becoming more commercial

• Decline in farming• Growth in consumer goods• Factories were:

– Offering better wages and...– Promising a better standard of living

• Hence people start to move to cities
