Prayer LESSON 4
SUPER CHURCH 2.0
The prayer of forgiveness is a prayer that everyone
should know how to pray. By knowing how to pray the
prayer of forgiveness, we will be able to re-establish our
relationship with God and with others.
How to pray the prayer of forgiveness: The Bible
tells us in 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins He is faithful
and just to forgive our sins.” This is the prayer that you
pray when you feel bad about something that you did
and you want to re-connect with God. It is kind of like
telling your parents you are sorry when you disobey
them. When you do this with your parents, you are
restoring your relationship with them.
What you do after you pray: Sometimes after you
pray you may still feel bad about what you did. This is
normal and does not mean that God has not forgiven
you. It doesn’t mean He didn’t hear you. It simply means
that you need to walk by faith and not by how you feel.
Receive God’s forgiveness. Forgive yourself and leave the
past behind. There is nothing you can do to change the
past.
Prayer For ForgivenessMEMORY VERSE: I John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive
us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (KJV)
TAKE HOME POINT: Pray the Prayer of Forgiveness when you feel bad about something you did.
➤ TO THE TEACHER:
The purpose of this
lesson is threefold:
1. To teach kids to
pray the Prayer
of Forgiveness.
2. What you do
after you pray.
3. What we do
if we want
forgiveness from
God.

What do you do if you want God to forgive you: The
Bible says in Mark 11:25, “And when you stand praying,
forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also
which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” So
basically, if you want God to forgive you, then you need
to forgive others. Has someone done something against
you that makes you mad every time you think about it?
Then you need to forgive them and forget it. The Bible
also tells us that there is no limit to how many times we
need to forgive one another.

(The lights go out.)
Teacher: Hey! Who turned out the lights?
DD: I’m too ashamed to let you see me.
Teacher: Who said that? Oh, here’s the light switch!
(The lights come back on. We see Detective Drake with a paper bag on his head.)
DD: I had nobody else to turn to. You have got to help me!
Teacher: We’ll help you. What seems to be the problem?
DD: I’m just so embarrassed!
Teacher: Really? Why are you embarrassed?
(Detective Drake takes the bag off his head.)
DD: Because a detective should have the skills to figure out his own problems.

Teacher: Detective Drake? It’s you under that disguise?
DD: Here, take my detective badge. I don’t deserve it anymore.
(Detective Drake hands the Teacher his badge)
Teacher: But why? What did you do?
DD: I did something so bad God could never forgive me.
Teacher: What could possibly be so bad that God wouldn’t forgive you for it?
DD: I…kicked a cat.
Teacher: You kicked a cat? That’s pretty bad, but I think God will forgive you. What do you think kids?
(Allow the kids time to respond)
DD: That’s not all. I kicked the cat so hard it flew across the yard and over the fence!
Teacher: Oh no! I hope the cat’s okay. Where did he land?
DD: If he had landed a few feet to the right, he would have hit a cactus; and if he had landed a few feet to the left, he would have landed right on the hot barbecue!
(As Detective Drake gestures left and right DD and Teacher look and lean that way, and encourage the kids to do the same)
Teacher: Yikes! Where did the cat land?

DD: The evidence suggests he landed right in the neighbor’s pool and then he swam to safety.
Teacher: Woah! Good thing he landed in the pool, but you really shouldn’t go around kicking cats! It’s just plain mean.
DD: I know, I know, I feel bad enough already.
Teacher: Why did you kick the cat in the first place?
DD: He missed the litter box.
Teacher: Did he miss it by much?
DD: I’ll say, the litter box is in the garage.
Teacher: And where did he, you know...Go?
DD: Right on Detective Drake’s badge.
(The Teacher tosses the badge on the ground.)
Teacher: Yuck! Well, I’m sure God will forgive you if you ask him.
DD: I’ve been saying the prayer of salvation all day and I just don’t feel like it’s working.
Teacher: But Detective, you already said that prayer. You’re a Christian right?
DD: Of course, but how else can I get God to forgive me than to say the prayer of salvation again?

Teacher: When we need God to forgive us, we don’t need to get born again a second time. We just need to pray the prayer of forgiveness and ask God to forgive us for what we did.
DD: Really? That’s great news!
Teacher: Yeah, it really is.
DD: I’m going to pray for forgiveness right now.
Teacher: We’ll see you next time Detective Drake.
DD: Bye kids!

WHAT YOU NEED: • Plant that is thirsty and beginning to brown • Watering can filled with water
PREPARATION: Place the brown plant and watering can on a table in front of the room.
ObJECT LESSON APPLICATION:
Has your mom ever had a plant that she forgot to
water?
(Hold up plant.)
When you see a plant that looks like this, what does
it mean? The brown leaves tell me that my plant is
thirsty. I’m going to water my plant.
(Pour some water onto the soil of the plant.)
Bummer. I watered my plant, but nothing happened.
It’s still brown. Should I water it again?

plant is still brown. What do you think? Should I keep watering
my plant?
(Allow for response.)
How do I know that the water is helping my plant? I can’t see a
difference.
The prayer for forgiveness is kind of like this. Let’s pretend that
I did something I should not have, like said a bad word. I feel
really bad about it. Well, the Bible says, “If I confess my sins He
is faithful and just to forgive me.” So I need to do the Word of
God and confess my sin and pray the prayer of forgiveness.
“Father God, I am sorry for saying those bad words. I realize
that it is sin. I thank you for forgiving me. In Jesus’ name.
Amen.”
I prayed the prayer, but I still feel bad about what I said. Has
this ever happened to you? How do I know that my prayer
worked? How do I know that God forgave me? I still feel guilty.
Even though I don’t feel any better, I know that God heard me
because He said He would. I John 1:9 was written by God. It
was his idea. He wouldn’t tell me to confess my sins and then
say, “No. I won’t forgive you.”

It is kind of like this plant. The plant does not look any better,
but I have faith it will because I watered it.
Sometimes I don’t feel any better when I pray the prayer for
forgiveness; however, I know that God has forgiven me, because
I asked Him to. What do I need to do?
• I need to forget the past.
• I need to forgive myself.
• I need to keep running my race.
• I need to keep reading my Bible and going to church.
• I need to walk by faith and the feeling of forgiveness will
come, just like my plant will get green again.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: Sin and unforgiveness will slow you down.
WHAT YOU NEED: • Winter jacket - heavy • 2 duffle bags with about 20 lbs of stuff inside (Light enough for a 10-year-old to pick up, but heavy enough
to weigh him down.) • “Sin” written on a piece of paper • “The Past” written on a piece of paper
CONTESTANTS: • 2 ten-year-olds PREPARATION: • Put “Sin” inside one bag and “The Past” in the other bag. • Put a piece of masking tape on the floor that will serve as the
start line and the finish line. INSTRUCTIONS: • Tell the kids they are going to run a race in a circle around
the room. • Before you start the race, put the heavy coat on one of the
kids. Ask that same kid to carry the two duffle bags. • Start the race. (The one child without the extra weights
should win the race.)
INTER-ACTIVEObJECT LESSON Run Your Race
SPIRITUAL APPLICATION:
Talk about how all of the extra weight that one boy was carrying slowed him down. This is the
same for us spiritually. God has a plan for you. He has a particular race that you are suppose to
run. Some things will slow you down. (Take the bags of weight.) Let’s see what is in this bag.
(Open it up and pull out the paper and show to class.) One thing that will slow you down is
sin. If we have sin in our life, how do we get rid of it? (Talk to the children about 1 John 1:9.)
(Open the second bag.) What else will slow us down? Thinking about your past sins, or how
other people have sinned against you, will also slow you down. The past is gone and should be
forgotten. If you have asked God to forgive you, He has. Forgive yourself. Leave the past and
keep running your race.
