� Thanks for attending the Annual Meetings at Grace Lutheran Church. If you did not attend,

please be checking out our church communications so that you are informed and please know we

need you. We need “The Wisdom of Crowds” as presented in the book below. �

�

I enjoyed reading this book as required reading for a class I took in 2014 at Luther Seminary. The book is

a wonderful presentation of how powerful the wisdom of the crowd has been in the life of our country. It also is

true in the Body of Christ� everyone counts!�

� �

� I would suggest that this book also has a message for us at Grace. We are in a discernment time and

everyone’s opinion will help us determine the wise road to take in fulfilling God’s mission in our church.

Included in this process is the sharing of our opinions and centering our thoughts on God through prayer and

scripture. Let us apply Proverbs 3:5�8 to our church body and believe that God will lead! �

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.

Please participate in the tasks the Ministry Site Profile Committee will present. The Ministry Site Profile

Committee will prepare a profile of Grace Lutheran Church’s expectations for the future pastor’s task and gifts.

Everyone’s input is needed! The results of the Ministry Site Profile Committee will be given to the Call

Committee who can use this information in interviewing perspective pastoral candidates.�

Lenten series is a study of “Life in the Wilderness.” This introduction to the series gives you some insight in

what we will be sharing at our Lenten services.�

What is a wilderness time in our life? A wilderness experience in our life is those places we do not

want to go and experiences we would not want to experience. Many of them are cen-

tered in the times we feel a loss in our life. �

Any baptized child showing desire to receive Jesus in Holy Communion is welcome to come to

First Communion preparation! �

Which children/youth?�

�� Fifth grade is recognized as a natural time for preparing for Holy Communion. Children begin thinking

about sin and death at this age and are able to understand concepts and actions taught in this prepa-

ration.�

�� Younger children showing desire to receive Communion are welcome to come to this preparation! Any-

one baptized is welcome at the Lord’s Table. All we ask is to have this preparatory conversation be-

fore their First Communion. Please speak with Patti Gaedtke, Director of Children’s Ministries, if you

wish to have your child attend preparation and receive Holy Communion at this time.�

�� Older children and youth or adults, who have not received this preparatory teaching, are urged to

come! God’s grace is too amazing to miss.�

Must parents come along?�

It is important and valuable for parents to attend. The preparation for and receiving of first communion

is a special milestone in your child’s faith journey. It is also a chance for you as parents to come together

with your child in a way that we don’t do often enough�to grow together in faith. Godparents and grand-

parents are also welcome to come along or when parents are unable to attend. �

February Special Offering�TAIV�

�

The Tomahawk Area Interfaith

Volunteers (TAIV) is the recipient

of the February Special Offering.

TAIV is a profit volunteer driven

organization that serves Toma-

hawk and the surrounding area. �

�

Our Mission and Vision: �

Volunteers putting their faith into action, building

relationships, and working together to fill the gap be-

tween family and other resources for the seniors and

those with disabilities in our community. To serve the

Tomahawk area through our core services of compan-

ionship, chore services and transportation, empower-

ing them to continue to live independently. �

�

There are several ways the members of Grace can sup-

port TAIV: �

�� Volunteer! Companionship by doing friendly visits

or phone calls, light housekeeping and chores like

running errands or providing transportation to

health or social appointments or events. �

�� Care�Receivers: Refer a person you know who

could benefit from TAIV’s volunteer services? �

�� Donations: Use the special offering envelope and

mark it for February Special Offering.�

�� Attend the TAIV Annual Spring Fundraiser! Pur-

chase a ticket to the annual fundraiser on Satur-

day, April 18, 2020 at the Inshalla Country Club.

This year will be Comedy for a Cause with Come-

dian/Magician, David Harris. Tickets are available

at the TAIV office or call. 715�453�8200. �

From the Stewardship Committee�

�

Giving Is an Obligation�

�

Does the title of this article cause you to pause? Is-

n’t giving supposed to be the free and joyous re-

sponse of God’s people who express their gratitude

and praise of God through their giving? Certainly,

our primary reason for giving is a response to the

Good News of the Gospel. Knowing what God has

done for us in Jesus prompts us to give and keep on

giving. God never stops giving to us, and we imitate

His nature through our giving.�

�

God’s people in the Old Testament were under an

obligation to give. God commanded them to give a

tenth (tithe) of their incomes for the support of

God’s work. In fact, there was a second and third

tithe so the people were commanded to give much

more than one�tenth of their incomes. However, as

New Testament Christians who live under God’s

grace in Jesus, we are no longer obligated to tithe.

As new covenant Christians, the motive for giving

has changed from a command to give to giving

cheerfully. �

�

Are the Old Testament laws no longer relevant? Je-

sus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish

the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish

them but to fulfill them” (Matthew 5:17). Jesus

came to keep all of God’s commandments perfectly.

He paid the price for our forgiveness by taking the

curse of the Law upon Himself, freeing us from the

demands of the Law. In Jesus, we are free to serve

God with pure hearts. Although we are free from

the Law, we know that God wants the best for us

and His laws give us order and purpose. �

�

As New Testament Christians, we live in God’s

grace. Secure in Christ’s presence and love, we ex-

press our thanksgiving for Who God is and what He

has done for us through our giving. We also know

that giving is God’s will. Therefore, we have an obli-

gation to give. The Apostle Paul wrote, “So then, as

we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone,

and especially to those who are of the household of

faith” (Galatians 6:10). We willingly and freely em-

brace the Law to give knowing it is God’s will for us

that we serve Him by serving others and extend His

kingdom through our generosity. We can conclude

by saying that giving is a wonderful opportunity and

also an obligation.�

Christmas With Friends�

Pastor Susan and Margie Welke would like to thank

everyone who help make Christmas With Friends

such a success. You volunteer time, prayers and do-

nations made the dinner possible.�

Grace Witulski � Youth Candidate�

I’m Grace Witulski, a current high school junior at Tomahawk High School. I have been at Grace

Lutheran for 9 years, along with my parents Faye and Chris, and younger sister Ellie. I have been

a figure skater for Tomahawk Figure Skating Club for 12 years, and as of 2017 I have been a

figure skating coach. I have also been teaching Sunday School for 6 years, working with kids of

all ages. I’ve had some great experiences through Grace Lutheran, specifically on the 2018

Wilderness Trip to the Beartooth Mountains in Montana, and the 2018 EYG trip to Houston, TX. �

Sandy Redmond �

I was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan and have lived in the Midwest most of my life. I moved to

Tomahawk in 1994 when I married Brian Redmond.�

Career�wise, I was a registered nurse who worked full�time for 45 years, usually hospital settings.

In the Twin Cities I worked in Surgical ICU, the Cardia Cath Lab, and Dialysis. In this area I

worked for Howard Young and Ministry Dialysis, serving as Dialysis Director for both Woodruff

and Rhinelander. I am currently in my eighth year of retirement.�

I live in Harshaw with my husband Brian who is a Christmas tree grower. We each have one child�Brian

has a son Craig who lives with his family in Rhinelander and I have a daughter Stephanie who lives with her

family in Houston, Texas. Brian and I have evolved into “snowbirds” gradually, spending several winter

weeks near Ocean Springs, MS where Brian sells Christmas trees.�

For community service I am a member and Treasurer of the Four Rivers Quilt Guild which sews and pro-

vides quilts, bags, stuffed animals and other fabric items to organizations in the area, including Salvation

Army, Ministry Hospice, and St Mary’s newborn nursery. I am also a member and Vice President of

Harshaw Helping Hands, a community service auxiliary which supports the Cassian�Woodboro Elementary

School, victims of disaster in the Cassian area, and various activities for Harshaw area children.�

Paul Zastrow�

I have been a member of Grace Lutheran for approximately 14 years, and have been a lifelong

resident of Tomahawk minus the 5 years in the Air Force stationed in Alaska. ��

I have worked for Arnott Plumbing for 30 years, and also volunteer for various tasks at Grace. �

I am married to Barb and we have 2 children: Emily and James.� There are many activities I enjoy

at Grace including going on the wilderness hike with James and Quake.�

Over the years I’ve helped coach soccer and softball.� My family was involved in the National Turkey

Federation and hosted banquets for several years.� I currently serve on the Trappers Association Board.�

I am an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoy spending time with my family.��

�

Neal Gebauer�

I am Neal Gebauer. I have been a member of Grace for about 14 years. Being part of the church

council gives me the opportunity to become more involved in activities at Grace. I am married to

Amy and we have 2 children, Emmerson and Ryan. I enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, kayaking

and hunting. �

Claudia Osero�

My name is Claudia Osero. I am married to Dan Osero. �

My grandchildren call me NaNa.�

I am a wife, mom, grandma, and friend to all I meet. I love people of all ages. One of my passions

is being creative, and that covers a lot of ground. I love sewing, needle point, decorating, and the

list goes on….�

I have been a member of Grace Lutheran since 2007, and lived in the Northwoods all my life.�

I sincerely love it here and have been involved in many ways at Grace Lutheran, and also in the community.

Some of the ways I have loved and enjoyed serving Grace are: �

●� The smiles/eagerness/attitude/work of the group from Lincoln Industries using a room here at Grace; the

children’s Christmas program and Jessie Stromberg’s work along with Sunday School staff to help the

children share the story of Christ’s birth; that almost 260 people were served Christmas dinner through

Grace’s Christmas with Friends. �

○� Grace has ended 2019 on a positive note financially. December offerings were up and our commit-

tees and staff continued to be fiscally responsible about spending money. Year end income to ex-

pense is $4299.17 in the black and we ended the year with 8.05% of our 2019 budget remaining. �

○� However, Shirley did note that our total offerings for 2019 were down from 2018. Yet they were

up from 2017. �

○� The audit committee will meet next week to finalize financials for 2019.�

○� Paul moved to accept the treasurer’s report as presented. Keri seconded. Motion carried.�

Old Business�

1.� Approve recommending Revised 2020 Budget to the congregation (Small Change to General Benev-

olence)�

●� At the creation of this agenda, it was thought that the budget line item “general benevolence”

would need to be revised due to money that would need to be paid to the synod contingent upon

results gleaned from the “Stewardship for All Seasons” campaign to help cover the synod’s cost of

the consultant firm that assisted churches with this campaign. However, as 2019 financial reports

were finalized, it was realized that Grace did not see an increase in offerings in 2019 vs 2018

so no money was owed to the synod for utilizing the consultant services. Thus, no revision to

this line item was necessary and no council action was needed for this agenda item. �

2.� Custodial Back�Up Position (Steve) No update.�

3.� Crossways Campaign update on plans (Laur ie)�

●� The committee working on this has been in contact with Crossways and at this time are hoping to

run the campaign in the month of February over the course of 4 Sundays. After discussion, council

agreed that this time frame would work. The committee is hopeful that Sharon Cook (executive

director of Crossways) will have some availability to visit Grace and share some information about

the vision/progress of the campaign. �

4.� Grace House update on condition/repairs (Al as information comes in) No update.�

5.� Update on insurance recommendations (Steve and church staff) �

●� Those working on the video inventory are very close to finishing. �

6. Council binder digital options (Ker i) �

●� Keri and Debbie have uploaded essential documents into this shared drive. Documents are catego-

rized by folder within the drive and it has been shared with council members.�

●� It is a work in progress, but the goal is to streamline/update documents and eventually have only

the secretaries (church and council secretary) as those who can edit/upload documents in the drive. �

7. Next steps with St. Mary’s (Wendy)�

●� Pastor Gary has had further discussion with Father Louis and found out that Father Louis does not

wish to do Lenten services together this year since we had completed going through the formal doc-

uments from the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation last year. �

8. Review plans and terms for Long Range Planning Committee (Steve, Mark) No update.�

9. Planning for the 2020 Retreat (Wendy) �

●� Wendy had contacted Darlene Kalfahs at the synod office about possible ideas for the retreat. She

suggested a workshop on communication (i.e. communicating what Grace does � “come and see”)

10. Update on church use policy (Kathy) No update.�

11. Prep for the Annual Meeting (Steve and Laur ie) �

●� John Krueger notified Steve that the Endowment Committee will now need to elect two new mem-

bers at the annual meeting. They are seeking two people to have ready to nominate at the annual

meeting.�

●� Corky Burcalow has agreed to be the Parliamentarian. (Since the meeting Corky found out she has

a conflict, so cannot be at the meeting. Steve will seek another person to be parliamentarian.)�

●� Other jobs/plans (ballot counting, refreshments, etc) were also delegated/finalized. Steve will con-

tact Debbie to put an announcement in the bulletin on the 18/19th to ask one last time for volun-

teers interested in being delegates for Synod and Conference Assemblies, Crossways, Homme

Homes and Gustavus Annual meetings. Wendy will also arrange to have a sign�up board for these

delegate positions in the narthex in the weeks prior to the annual meeting.�

12. Community Support Budget Distribution (Steve)�

●� We will add this to the Council Calendar for yearly review in the month of October so we do not

miss the opportunity to support our Tomahawk ministries or other community needs with any re-

maining money we may have left in this line item of the budget before the budget closes out at year

end.�

14. Request for Scholarship Money from Hannah Schmit (Steve)�

●� Hannah Schmit is currently attending seminary at Luther College. She has sent a request for some

monetary assistance for her seminary fees. We were aware of her seminary attendance and had

discussed this possibility last year during budget planning for 2019. This was reflected in the line

item “young adult mission or seminary”. Grace has helped its members attending seminary in the

past. There are funds in that line item as well as money in a restricted fund for that purpose. �

about her needs. So we would be contacting her about her needs and discuss further at our next

meeting.�

15. Approve Nominees for Call Committee to be recommended to the congregation (Steve and Mark)�

●� Mark had contacted the people from our list brainstormed at the December meeting. After his call-

ing, he had a list of 8 names for the call committee. Mark was especially pleased that all on the list

were excited and wanted to be on the call committee. Our constitution states we need a minimum

of 6. We decided to elect 8 in case any need to step down unexpectedly during the process, we

would still be better prepared to meet constitutional requirements.�

●� After discussion, Mark moved to recommend Eric Anderson, Dave Schmit, Nancy Herbison, Mar-

tin Schmidt, Margie Welke, Heather Kurth, Samantha Colburn, and Sherry Clements for the call

committee to be voted on at the annual congregational meeting. Paul seconded. Motion carried.�

16. New Council Member Orientation (Steve)�

●� Laurie and Mark will do this again as they did it for last year’s new members.�

17. Approve single signature for the mortgage payment check (Steve)�

●� Shirley noted that the amount for the Portico monthly payment also now fits into the category of

needing two signatures per our Grace policy. �

●� After discussion, Mark moved to approve to allow the Grace Lutheran Church treasurer to do a sin-

gle signature for the Grace Lutheran Church mortgage payment and Portico monthly payment for

the 2020 year. Christi seconded. Motion carried.�

●� We will add this to the Council Calendar for January for review for the following year’s payments.�

18. Amazon Smile Money (Shir ley and Steve)�

●� From 2019, we collected ~$856 from both the Amazon Smile program and Thrivent Choice Dol-

lars. Shirley has put this money into a restricted fund that includes these monies and those re-

deemed from credit card rewards so we now have a total of $1508.99 in that restricted fund. �

●� After discussion, it was decided that Steve will check on the current funding needs for gift cata-

logue items. We also discussed giving $250 to a Tomahawk ministry to fulfill our 2019 budget

commitment of giving to Tomahawk area ministries. Both will be further discussed at our next

meeting.�

THANK YOU to Everyone Involved!�

�

Once again we have been blessed with a successful Cookie Walk, Lefse, and Craft Sale event.� It takes many

helping hands to make this fund raising event take place and God has looked favorably on us. So to all those who:

created and shared crafts, helped with making lefse or purchased ingredients, baked goodies at home to share

with us, �helped move tables, quilted to make the donated quilt, worked the event or came to purchase at event or

services afterwards thank you so very much!� I would like to take just a moment to remind you of the many areas

in which our funds have helped out over the years: new furniture in Gathering Area, new furniture in Lounge,

new round tables and chairs in Fellowship Hall, donations to snowblower, new shed, funds toward Security Sys-

tem, supplies for Sunday School, Debt Reduction, Reiff Hall renovation, and many others. This year we had a net

income of about $3500.� Disbursements went as follows:� $1000 Debt reduction, $700 to Kitchen Renovation,

$800 to Confirmation Hallway lights and ceiling replacement, $250 to parking lot fund, $250 to Camera

(technology), $250 to Carpet in Youth Room, and $250 for new lefse equipment. Again thank you to everyone.
