THE COACHES

PANTHERS PLAYING FOR PRIDE The Prairie View A&M Panthers return to the road for their final two contests of the season as they begin their swing in the Mississippi Delta at Mis-sissippi Valley State on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Due to renovations at MVSU’s Rice-Totten Stadium in 2010, this marks the first trip to the MVSU cam-pus for the Panthers since 2008. LAST TIME

THEY MET Prairie View A&M 43 Mississippi Valley 34 Sept. 24, 2011 Blackshear Field Prairie View, Texas Fred Anderson rushed for two touchdowns within a 23-second span in the fourth quarter to help Prai-rie View A&M come from behind for a 43-34 win against Mississippi Valley State on Saturday night. Anderson's 3-yard TD run capped a 95-yard drive and gave the Panthers (2-2, 2-1 SWAC) a 33-28 lead with 14:49 remaining. After the kickoff, Mississippi Valley backup quarterback Marvin Pittman fumbled, and Donald Law returned the ball to the 6-yard line. On the next play, Anderson scored to give Prairie View A&M a 12-point cushion. Pittman hit Paul Cox with a 31-yard TD pass to get the Delta Devils (0-4, 0-3) within 40-34, but Christopher Barrick kicked a 30-yard field goal for the Panthers with 6:17 remaining. Jerry Lovelocke was 19 of 23 for 242 yards and touchdown for Prai-rie View A&M. Anderson ran for 91 yards. Cox had six catches for 137 yards and two TDs.

THE LAST TIME Prairie View has a five-game winning streak over the Delta Devils which dates back to 2007. This marks the longest winning streak for the Pan-thers since a five-game wining streak over the Delta Devils from 1966 to 1970. Due to renovations at Rice-Totten Stadium in 2010, the Panthers return to the MVSU campus for the first time since 2008. In 2010, both teams met in Greenville, Miss.

AVOIDING HISTORY Prairie View A&M has reen-tered into treacherous waters the pro-gram worked tirelessly to navigate out of over the past few decades. The Panthers are currently 3-6 on the season and 3-4 in league play after picking up their first three wins in October. The last time the Panthers had a losing record this late in the year occurred in 2006 as the team finished 3-7. With only two games left, the Panthers have unfortunately clinched their second straight losing season which hasn’t happened since 2005 and 2006.

REUNION TIME A three-year head coach of Mississippi Valley State, Karl Morgan is certainly not a stranger to the SWAC nor to several members on the Prairie View A&M coaching staff with stints at Southern and Alcorn State. At Southern, Morgan served as defensive line coach in 1995 with current PV offensive coordinator Mark Orlando. Also on the team as players were current PV defensive coordinator Heishma Northern and defensive backs coach Raasaan Haralson. In addition, linebackers coach John Pearce and MVSU linebackers coach Terrence Graves were on the same staff at Norfolk State in 2003 while Graves and Orlando were at Southern together in the late 2000s.

RUN, RUN, RUN

The Panthers led the SWAC in rushing last fall with 174.4 yards per outing and 17 rushing touchdowns. The team was over the 200-yard mark per game earlier this year but dropped below that mark in mid-September. However, the month of October was good for the Panthers as they’re inching closer to that mark with a current average of 192.2 yards per outing and 16 touchdowns scored on the ground. As a result, PV leads the SWAC in rushing yardage and ranks 26th nationally. Sophomore running back Fred Anderson leads the team in rush-ing with 55.6 yards per game and two touchdowns while fellow sophomore Courtney Brown follows with 46.8 yards per game and seven touchdowns.

DO A LITTLE OF ALL Freshman running back Johnta’ Hebert has emerged as a dual threat for the Panthers as he leads the SWAC with 119.6 all-purpose yards per outing. Hebert is also the team’s pri-mary kick returner with 18.9 yards per return and the holder of the team’s lone kickoff return for a score this year. Against Grambling State on Oct. 1, Hebert took a kickoff to the house for the first time as a Panther as he ran back a 75-yard kickoff return on the game’s opening play. Hebert also caught a 41-yard pass and scored his first career receiving touchdown in the same game. Versus Southern last weekend, Hebert broke free for a 57-yard reception late in the game which stalled Sothern's momentum.

SPREADING

THE WEALTH Playing wide receiver in of-fensive coordinator Mark Orlando’s offense has to be exciting as a total of 15 players have caught a pass this fall. Spencer Nelson leads the way with 52 receptions while Deandre Cooper follows with 33.

PLEASE PUNT IT

TO ME Redshirt senior wideout Spencer Nelson is having a career year as he averages 16.1 yards per punt return. Nelson has fielded 11 punts in 2012 for a total of 178 yards with a long of 46 yards. Nelson leads the SWAC in punt return yardage and ranks third nationally. As a team, Prairie View A&M ranks 11th nationally in punt returns. A standout receiver, Nelson has also compiled 486 yards on 52 re-ceptions.

TWICE IS NICE, BUT

ONE HAS EMERGED Entering the 2012 season, head coach Heishma Northern pre-ferred to settle on one quarterback this season after playing three quarterbacks in 2011. Sophomore De’Auntre Smiley had the opportunity to solidify the position early after beating out sophomore Jerry Lovelocke, who was PV’s leading passer in 2011. Smiley had a solid debut on Sept. 1 with 186 yards on 13-of-20 passing. Lovelocke entered late in the second half and led the Panthers on a game-tying, 80-yard touchdown drive. Smiley played the entire game against Lamar on Sept. 8 and every play except the final few in the fourth quarter loss against Alabama A&M on Sept. 15. With Smiley out beginning on Sept. 22, Lovelocke struggled in his first two starts but returned to his old form versus Grambling State with a 199-yard passing performance on 19-of-26 pass-ing. Smiley returned to action on Oct. 20 versus Alcorn State and burst on to the scene after being out for more than a month. The Lufkin, Texas native was named SWAC Player of the Week after passing for 251 yards on 16-of-20 passing with four touchdowns. He was named National FCS Co-Offensive Player of the Week with 398 passing yards, 170 rushing yards and five total touchdowns (4 P, 1 R) versus Southern on Oct. 27.

ALL SMILES(LY) From Oct. 20-27, Prairie View A&M sophomore quarterback De'Aun-tre Smiley received recognition for his play on the field as he was named The Sports Network FCS Co-National Offen-sive Player of the Week on Oct. 29. A native of Lufkin, Texas, Smiley had a career outing in the third annual Shreveport Classic versus South-ern as he finished with 398 passing yards, 170 rushing yards on 14 at-tempts and five total touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing). The nation’s fifth-best effi-cient passer, Smiley was the chief engi-neer behind a Panther offensive unit which finished with 645 (398 P, 247 R) total offensive yards. Since returning to action on Oct. 20, Smiley has thrown for 649 yards, tossed eight touchdown passes and rushed for 200 yards while completing 77 percent of his passes (45-of-58) with no interceptions.

TURNING THE

CORNER? The Panther defense has had its fair share of struggles this fall as they rank ninth in total defense amongst SWAC foes. However, the defense may have turned a corner in October as they allowed a season-low 369 yards versus Alcorn State on Oct. 20 and 14 points to Grambling State on Oct. 6. Versus Alabama State on Nov. 3, the Panthers allowed a season-low 310 total offensive yards.

ROAD WARRIORS

ONCE AGAIN The Panthers will live out their suitcases once again this season as they’ll play only two games on cam-pus. The Panthers have nine games in which they’ll pack their suitcases this season and will be the designated home team in four of the nine games.

EQUIPMENT

MANAGER ,

NOW STARTER When senior wide receiver Deandre Cooper hits the gridiron on Saturday, it’ll mark a special time in his life as football was the last thing on his mind several years ago. Cooper suffered a tragic neck injury during a practice session as a true freshman in 2008 and missed both the 2008 and 2009 seasons. After spending the 2009 sea-son as an equipment manager, Cooper received medical clearance in 2010 to return to the field and spent the season playing special teams. Cooper was moved to wide receiver in the spring of 2011 and has been a starter ever since.

NORTHERN IN

NOVEMBER PVAMU head coach Heishma Northern is 1-3 lifetime when playing in the month of November.

RECORD BREAKERS Very few teams in the SWAC have as many record breakers on its coaching staff as Prairie View A&M. Running backs coach Brian Morgan name is etched in the SWAC and national recordbooks as he’s the all-time leading scorer amongst SWAC kickers and the career record holder with 50 field goals and single season field goal leader with 18. He also led Division I-AA following the 2001 cam-paign with 18 field goals and finished as the I-AA all-time leader with 197 extra points. Graduate assistant Clyde Edwards was one of the most produc-tive wide receivers in Grambling State history as he holds the school record for career touchdown receptions, re-ceiving yards and the school single season record for touchdown recep-tions. Graduate assistant Brady Faggard helped rewrite PV’s record-books as Faggard holds the school re-cord for field goals made with 19 dur-ing his four-year career and also holds the school single-season record with 35 extra points made in 2009.

ROAD TO THE NFL Two Panthers were in NFL camps this summer in defensive ends Quinton Spears and Adrian Hamilton. Spears was recently released by the Cleveland Browns while Hamilton is with the Baltimore Ravens after spending camp with the Dallas Cowboys. Defensive end Jarvis Wilson has the potential to become the next with a strong season as he’s attracting NFL inter-est.

PV COACHNG TRIO

SPENDS SUMMER AT

NFL TRAINING CAMPS A trio of Prairie View A&M coaches will rub elbows with some of the top athletes and coaches in their profes-sion as defensive line assistant Gabe Northern, assistant head/offensive line coach Prince Pearson and safeties coach Bubba McDowell interned with NFL organizations during their respective training camps. A second round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills in 1996, Northern is a five-year NFL veteran who has spent time with the Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minne-sota Vikings. A graduate of LSU, Northern has coached on both the high school and collegiate levels. Pearson is the team's assistant head coach and also coaches the offensive line and tight ends. The Florida native played collegiately at the University of Minnesota and has coached collegiately at the College of the Holy Cross, Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M in addi-tion to a successful stint as a high school coach in Florida. Pearson was busy this offseason honing his craft as he also participated in the prestigious NFL-NCAA Coaches Acad-emy in the spring of 2012. Pearson was one of only 30 coaches selected to net-work and learn from former NFL coaches, general managers and current NCAA head coaches. McDowell, who's in his second year on the Prairie View A&M football coaching staff, will have somewhat of a homecoming as he'll intern with the Ten-nessee Titans. McDowell was an NFL All-Pro and fan favorite with the Houston Oilers throughout his six-year career in Houston after graduating from the Univer-

sity of Miami. The Oilers moved to the state of Tennessee in 1997 before assum-ing its current mascot in 1999. This marks the fourth fellowship for McDowell as he interned with the Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins and Houston Texans.

PANTHERS ON

THE TUBE This fall, the Panthers made history as they were the first SWAC pro-gram to have a live game on the newly-created Comcast SportsNet Houston. The team’s homecoming contest versus Alcorn State on Oct. 20 was tele-vised live on campus. The game was shown live across the south on Comcast affiliates in Louisiana (Shreveport, Mon-roe, Houma, La Place) and Arkansas (Little Rock).

UP NEXT Prairie View A&M closes out the 2012 regular season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff next Saturday in Pine Bluff, Ark. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.

HEAD FOOTBALL COACH

HEISHMA NORTHERN

Heishma Northern was named the 31st head coach in university history on Dec. 13, 2010. No stranger to the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Northern begins his 16th season on the collegiate level and eighth season at Prairie View A&M. In his first season as head coach for the Panthers, Northern led one of the youngest teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference to within one game of earn-ing a SWAC Championship berth as Prairie View A&M finished tied for second in the SWAC’s Western Division. As a team, the Panthers placed five players on the 2011 All-SWAC Team, led the league in rush offense with 174.8 yards per game and finished with the third-best offensive unit in the SWAC. Defensively, Northern’s defensive background had a huge impact on the field as the Panthers led the SWAC with 45

sacks. Prairie View A&M also displayed sound discipline on the gridiron as they committed the fewest amount of penalties in the SWAC. As a result of the team’s defensive prowess, defensive end Adrian Hamilton emerged as one of the top defenders in the nation as he set the SWAC and Prairie View A&M single season sack record with 20.5 sacks en route to earning 2011 co-SWAC Defensive Player of the Year honors and a third-place finish in the 2011 Buck Bu-chanan Award voting, which is awarded to the top defender on the Football Championship Subdivision level. Prai-rie View A&M’s fifth consecutive consensus AP All-American, Hamilton also played in two postseason all-star games in addition to becoming the second straight Panther defensive lineman to sign a NFL contract as he inked with the Dallas Cowboys. In addition to Hamilton’s accomplishments, several other Panthers had impressive seasons under North-ern as running back/kick returner Jermaine Waddy led the SWAC in all-purpose yards while cornerback Moses Ellis finished as the league’s top punt returner. Prior to becoming head coach, Northern was an award-winning defensive coordinator for six seasons at Prairie View A&M. Under his watch, the Panther defense rose to become one of the top units in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Ranks. For the fourth straight season, Northern’s defense produced another All-American following the 2010 campaign as cornerback Moses Ellis led the nation in interceptions with eight and defended 22 passes en route to earning All-American and All-SWAC honors. As a unit, the Panthers finished second in pass defense amongst SWAC foes as they only yielded 164.6 yards per contest. As a result, four members of the Panther defense earned All-SWAC honors in Ellis (first team), defensive lineman Quinton Spears (first), free safety Chris Adingupu (second) and middle linebacker Max Sencherey (second). Despite losing six key starters and a two-time All-American from the previous year, Prairie View’s defen-sive unit was instrumental during the team’s historic run to the SWAC Championship in 2009 as the unit led the SWAC in scoring defense with 16.6 points per outing and pass defense efficiency (101.7). The Panthers finished the 2009 season ranked fifth in total defense and produced its second consecutive All-American in defensive back Anthony Beck along with having three All-SWAC members in Beck, Spears and Adingupu. In addition, Northern’s unit recorded two shutouts on the season and held four teams to 74 yards or less on the ground. In 2008, the Panther defense set the tone for the team’s 9-1 record as they concluded the year ranked second nationally in scoring defense, third in total defense, third in rush defense and seventh in pass efficiency defense. Prairie View also made history and recorded two shutouts for the first time since the 1966 season. As a result of Prairie View’s defensive prowess, Northern earned national acclaim and was selected as FootballScoop.com’s 2008 Division I-AA Coordinator of the Year. Individually, linebacker Zach East closed out his career as a two-time All-American while Beck and Spears earned First and Second Team All-SWAC Honors, re-spectively. During the 2007 season, Northern’s defense played a key role in helping the Panthers clinch their first winning season in four decades as they finished atop the SWAC in scoring and red zone defense along with a third-place total defense ranking. A total of three starters earned All-SWAC honors led by East earning All-American and SWAC Defensive Player of the Year Honors.

9 2012 PANTHER FOOTBALL • OFFICIAL GAME NOTES

One year removed from finishing sixth in total defense among SWAC foes, Northern made his mark in his second year at Prairie View during the 2006 season after fielding the top-ranked defensive unit in the conference. Led by first team All-SWAC defensive end and future NFL free agent signee Jermaine McGhee, the Panthers set a school record for fewest yards rushing by an oppo-nent after holding Edward Waters College to -35 yards. For his hard work on the gridiron after the season, Northern was one of 26 coaches from across the nation invited to attend the NCAA Expert Coaches Academy in Miami, Fla. Prior to his tenure at Prairie View, Northern spent seven seasons at Grambling State University in a variety of capacities. Initially brought to GSU to serve as running backs coach, Northern made a seamless transition to coaching defensive backs in 2001 as his unit ranked ninth nationally in interceptions en route to GSU’s second-straight SWAC Championship. During the 2002 season, which marked Grambling’s third con-secutive SWAC title, Northern’s group improved on the interception mark as they ranked fourth nationally. In 2003, Northern assumed the role of interim defensive coordinator and immediately made his impact felt as the Tiger defense finished the year ranked third nationally against the run in Division I-AA. In the SWAC, the Tigers finished second in rushing, third in scoring defense, fourth in opponent third down percentage, fourth in turnover margin and fifth in sacks. Over the course of his coaching career, Northern has had several of his former players enter the profes-sional football realm gaining experience with the NFL, World and Arena Football Leagues. In addition, several of his pupils have received an opportunity to coach on the collegiate level. A 1996 mathematics education graduate of Southern University, Northern began his coaching career on the high school level at Glen Oaks High School in Baton Rouge, La. where he coached girl’s basketball and base-ball. He then moved on to Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. serving as the team’s running backs coach and spe-cial teams coordinator in 1997 under former head coach, Super Bowl MVP and current Grambling State head coach Doug Williams. A student of the game of football, Northern was one of only 15 coaches from across the nation selected to participate in the prestigious NCAA Champions Forum during June of 2010. He has also completed a training camp internship with the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League in the summer of 2009. Northern, who also holds a master’s degree in Sports Administration from Grambling State, is the oldest of three siblings and is married to the former Paula Duell of Baton Rouge, La. Together, they have two children, Adam (5) and Brooke (1).

19 2012 PANTHER FOOTBALL • OFFICIAL GAME NOTES

GAME 1 Texas Southern 44 Prairie View A&M 41 Sept. 1, 2012 Reliant Stadium Houston, Texas Robert Hersh kicked a 47-yard field goal on the last play to give Texas South-ern a 44-41 victory against Prairie View A&M on Saturday night at Reliant Stadium in the season opener for both teams. After Jerry Lovelocke ran 5 yards for a touchdown to enable Prairie View A&M to tie the score with 1:16 remaining, Texas Southern's Billy Rosenberg stepped in front of a short kickoff and gave the Tigers possession at their 49-yard line. Five plays later, Danta-vio Parker hit Harry Brown with a 9-yard pass to the Prairie View A&M 30 with four seconds remaining, setting up Hersh's kick attempt. Texas Southern, which overcame a 20-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter, used two quarterbacks. Parker played earlier in the game before relieving Riko Smalls, who passed for 222 yards and a touchdown and ran for 101 yards, for the final drive. Fred Plummer had five receptions for 142 yards for the Tigers, and Edward Perkins-Loving rushed for 88 yards and two TDs. Courtney Brown had 86 yards and three touchdowns rushing for the Panthers. Hersh made three field goals, including a 42-yarder that gave Texas Southern a 41-34 lead in the fourth quarter. The Tigers opened the Darrell Asberry coaching era with a win and snapped a five-game losing streak in the series. It was the second straight meeting between the schools decided on a late field goal, as Prairie View won 37-34 on a kick with four seconds remaining a year ago.

GAME 2 Lamar 31 Prairie View A&M 0 Sept. 8, 2012 Provost Umphrey Stadium Beaumont, Texas Kevin Johnson scored three touch-downs on the four times he touched the football, leading Lamar to a 31-0 victory over Prairie View A&M on Saturday night. Johnson had three receptions for 39 yards, including touchdowns of 11 and 8 yards in the first quarter. He also scored on his only rushing attempt, finding the end zone from 12 yards out in the second quarter for the Cardinals (1-1). Ryan Mossakowski was 21 of 30 for 220 yards passing for Lamar. Herschel Sims (83 yards) and DePaul Garrett (79) com-bined for 162 yards rushing on 19 carries. Prairie View (0-2) was held to 249 yards of offense. The Panthers were 3 of 11 on third-down conversions and never got past the Lamar 28-yard-line on their 10 pos-sessions. Prairie View's De'Auntre Smiley was 19 of 27 passing for 165 yards.

GAME 3 Alabama A&M 42 Prairie View A&M 30 Sept. 15, 2012 Lewis Crews Stadium Huntsville, Ala. Deaunte Mason tossed three touchdown passes and ran for three more as Alabama A&M rallied to topple Prairie View A&M 42-30 in Southwestern Athletic Confer-ence action Saturday night. Mason was a part of every Bulldog score, with none more important than the final two. His 4-yard TD pass to Bobby Goldsby with 5:45 to play leapfrogged Ala-bama A&M (3-0, 2-0 SWAC) to a 35-30 lead, and his 7-yard run two minutes later put the game on ice. The Panthers (0-3, 0-2) broke a 21-21 halftime tie on Christopher Barrick's 28-yard field goal in the third, but fell behind when Mason scored from 2-yards out. Prairie View A&M retook the lead on consecutive field goals from Barrick, setting the score at 30-28 before Mason spearheaded the final comeback. The Panthers' De'Auntre Smiley accounted for 113 yards and a TD on 13 rushes.

GAME 4 North Dakota State 66 Prairie View A&M 7 Sept. 22, 2012 Fargodome Fargo, ND Prairie View A&M's first-ever trip to the state of North Dakota was unsuccessful as top-ranked North Dakota State jumped all over the Panthers 66-7. The Bison scored 28 points in the second quarter with touchdowns from Moody, John Crockett, Sam Ojuri, and Taylor Nelson, and kicks by Adam Keller. In the third quarter, Dev Dinwiddie took over the scoring on the ground. The Panthers (0-4) were scoreless until the fourth quarter when D.J. Har-ris caught a 7-yard pass from Jerry Lovelocke. The score marked Harris' first career touch-down followed by an extra point from Chris Barrick, to put Prairie View on the score-board. Prairie View, which ends its non-conference stretch, is seeing its worst start since 2002 when it was 0-6. The Bisons are ranked No. 1 in the FCS Coaches Top 25.

GAME 5 Jackson State 34 Prairie View A&M 13 Sept. 29, 2012 Mississippi Veteran Memorial Stadium Jackson, Miss. Willie Bell recovered a Prairie View A&M fumble in the end zone with 27 seconds left in the third quarter to break a tie and spark Jackson State to a 34-13 South-western Athletic Conference victory Saturday night. The Tigers (2-3, 2-2) tacked on two fourth-quarter touchdowns and haven't lost at home to the Panthers (0-5, 0-3) since 1970. Bell's recovery of a fumble by punter Travis Jatzlau came after the Tigers had backed the Panthers into a fourth-and-14 from their 8-yard line. After Prairie View led 10-0 at halftime, Jackson State battled back in the third quarter with a strong running game led by Tommy Gooden, who finished with 135 yards on 18 carries.

GAME 6 Prairie View A&M 31 Grambling State 14 Oct. 6, 2012 Cotton Bowl Dallas, Texas A 75-yard kickoff return helped Prairie View win its first game of the season Saturday night, defeating Grambling State 31-14 at The State Fair Classic at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Later, Love-locke kept the ball for a 1-yard run and Courtney Brown added a touchdown after a 45-yard run. The Panthers are now 1-5 overall and 1/3 in the SWAC. For the Tigers (0-5, 0-4 SWAC), their scoring came on the ground as Cedric Skinner scored on a 2-yard run and D. J. Wil-liams on a 19-yard run. Following both, the kicks by Angelo Eave were good. Prairie View defeated Grambling in last season's State Fair Classic. The last time Prairie View beat Grambling in consecu-tive seasons was in 1963 and 1964.
