Celebrating Success
Yahoo! We had so much fun at the Calgary "Stampede to Success"
Conference. What an amazing event. Thank you to Judy Mooney and
her Conference Team for a world-class event.
We were honoured with a visit from Toastmasters International
President, Mohammed Murad. President Murad arrived in Calgary on
Saturday, November 1, 2014 in the midst of a snowstorm. President
Murad lives in Dubai, UAE and this was the first time he saw snow.
President Murad was kept very busy with planned events, corporate visits
and corporate recognition in Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.
President Murad opened the Conference with a "Yahoo!". He was "White-
Hatted" by Mayor Nenshi, our Guest Speaker at Conference and in
constant demand for numerous picture taking opportunities. President
Murad left Calgary on November 10, during a snowstorm, but the
members will fondly remember the warmth he brought to District 42.
It was exciting to celebrate 60 years as District 42 and 90 years as
Toastmasters International. I extend a special thank you to our Past
District Governors who have guided District 42 during 60 amazing years
of growth.
I would like to congratulate Division B's Riley Potter, winner of the
District 42 Humorous Speech Contest, Kevin Safinuk, Table Topics
Contest winner and BLT Toastmasters for winning the Mileage Trophy.
Way to go Division B!

During our November 8, 2014 Business Meeting, the
District Council voted to proceed with the Reformation
of District 42. The Reformation Committee, led by
Past International Director Ken Tanner, will submit a
formal proposal which we hope will be reviewed by the
International Directors during their Board Meeting in
February 2015. The current plan is to elect two Lt.
Governors of Education and Training and two Lt.
Governors of Marketing during our Spring Convention,
"Top Gavel", April 24 to 26, 2015 in Lethbridge,
Alberta. Beginning July 1, 2016 our District is
working toward becoming two new Districts. Visit
the District 42 website for updates on the proposed
boundaries and progress toward this initiative.
District 42 welcomed our first new club of the year,
BVC Toastmasters in Calgary. Congratulations to
Division C for leading the way.
Although we have lost several existing clubs in District
42, we are working hard toward becoming a
Distinguished District by June 30, 2015. We are
actively looking for Club Sponsors, Mentors and
Coaches. If you are willing to help, please contact our
Lt. Governor of Marketing, Lorraine Wheatley.
I would like to continue to encourage each of you to
develop an "I Can Do It" attitude as you step out of
your comfort zone, embrace new challenges and
initiatives and to "Reach for the Stars" during this
Toastmasters year.

Can you remember the first table topics
question you answered?
Why did I want to join Toastmasters? It was
59 seconds long.
What scares you more than public
speaking?
Presenting a topic for the first time to a large
group of 200 or more.
If you could pick anyone to spend a day
with to be coached on speaking or
leadership skills, who would you choose?
Mona Cooley (never told her this). The
reason is in her evaluation of my first CC #9
speech. She inspired me to continue on and
learn from those around you and provided
real points to improve on.
Is this your first DTM?
It is my first and it took just over two years.
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM? Meeting many
different Toastmasters along the way and
knowing the support was there.
What was the most interesting speech
you gave?
How to create the perfect burger. Everyone
was wanting one.
What is your favorite quote?
I really do not have one; however I do
believe that if you want something you
should work hard for it.

At the DTM Luncheon at the Fall Conference in Calgary,
we celebrated 14 newly minted Distinguished

Can you remember the first table topics question
you answered?
It was a tall tale where I talked about coyotes whisking
small children away and having to rescue them (it was
Halloween). I spoke for two minutes, 10 seconds!
What scares you more than public speaking?
Public speaking doesn't scare me anymore - thank
you Toastmasters!
Is this your first DTM?
This is DTM #1. I've been a Toastmaster for 11 years
but didn't get serious about my DTM until three years
ago.
What encouraging advice would you give to a
toastmaster on their DTM journey?
Don't hesitate, just do it! The things you'll learn along
the way are worth the journey.
What was the most rewarding part of your journey
towards DTM?
Being an Area Governor. I really loved the mentoring
aspects of that role and seeing the improvement in all
the clubs through cross-pollination and sharing. I
grew a lot as a leader during this period as well.
What is your favorite quote?
"It is what it is." We can't change the past and
pointing fingers never gets to solution. Whatever "it"
is, it has happened; can't be changed; we just need to
get over or around it and carry on.
What is your next journey destination? Working
towards my second CC and second CL. DTM #2?
Willard Robitaille, DTM
Can you remember the first table topics
question you answered?
I cannot remember the table topic question I
answered 20 years ago, except that I managed to
speak for nearly 2 minutes.
What scares you more than public speaking?
A conviction and imprisonment for a crime I did not
commit.
Spend a day with someone to be coached on
speaking or leadership skills?
I would choose Patricia Fripp.
Is this your first DTM?
This is my fourth DTM. It took me seven years for
my 1st DTM, three and a half years for my 2nd, five
and half years for my 3rd and four years for my 4th.
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM?
My HPL for my 3rd DTM was “Reducing Crimes
Among Youth.” My greatest satisfaction was
interviewing clients of Youth Emergency Services,
Air Cadets and Grade 9 students for my project.
What was the most interesting speech you
gave?
“Peace in the World begins in the Heart.”
What is your favorite quote?
“To err is human, to forgive is divine”
What is your next journey destination?
Assist as many Toastmasters as possible reach
their goals in communication and leadership.

Doris Henn, DTM
Can you remember the first table topics
question you answered?
I don't remember the first but I remember one that
I received about the 3rd week - It was about
Heather Mills and I didn't have a clue who she was
so it was very hard to answer. I stood up and sat
down about three times and felt like crawling out
of the room and never going back again.
What scares you more than public speaking?
Scary movies.
Who would you spend a day with to be
coached on speaking or leadership skills?
One of the "Champs"
Is this your first DTM?
This is my 3rd DTM. I will be a TM for 8 years in
January 2015. The first DTM took four and half
years. I will wait for the revitalized education
program for any future DTMs...... I think.
What encouraging advice would you give to a
toastmaster on their DTM journey?
Work smarter not harder. Find someone who
received their DTM and ask them for tips/help if
needed.
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM?
Being a club coach because there is so much
opportunity when you help a low member
struggling club. That was the one position that
helped me achieve many of the DTM goals.
Christina Kruis, DTM
Can you remember the first table topics
question you answered?
I was a guest. The question was something
about a happy marriage. I won best TT that
night and joined the next week. Very clever they
were!!
What scares you more than public
speaking?
Wild animals, mean people and nightmares of
either!

What is the most interesting information
you have used for your introduction?
I was a Saskatchewan Roughrider
cheerleader for five years.
What was the most interesting speech you
gave?
I am not certain about interesting but some of
the speeches that have had the most impact
include speeches about my dog Mocha,
speeches about my Dad and speeches about
my DTM journey - especially my year as
president.
What is your favorite quote?
“I can do all things through Christ who
strengthens me.”
What is your next journey destination?
To be a successful District 42 Governor.

Who would you spend a day with to be coached
on speaking or leadership skills?
I always go back to Jesus, the best teacher of all.
Imagine one hour with him to learn how to speak!
People are still talking about him!
Is this your first DTM?
It is my second. The first one took 14 years. My
second one took less than a third of the time. More
opportunity, more connections, more confidence!
What encouraging advice would you give to a
toastmaster on their DTM journey?
Make a plan. Step by step you can achieve
anything.
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM?
THE FRIENDS!!!
What is the most interesting information you
have used for your introduction?
I used to be a hooker. (A hooker plays #2 in the
scrum on a rugby team)
What was your biggest challenge?
Start a club. Friends invited me to help charter MVP
Advanced. That was how it started. It was fun and
very rewarding. Glad I had the opportunity.
What is your favorite quote?
“Multiply your talents.”
Anything else that you would like to make
comment about.
I thought one DTM would be amazing, never thought
two was possible in one lifetime. Now I know. And
you can do it too!
Ingrid Pederson, DTM
Can you remember the first table topics question
you answered?
Can’t remember!
What scares you more than public speaking?
I worry more about my husband finding his dream
job (he’s a recent university graduate) than public
speaking – I used to be a tour guide! I joined
Toastmasters to improve my impromptu speaking
and my leadership skills.
Who would you spend a day with to be
coached on speaking or leadership skills?
I would spend a day with Steve Jobs if he was
still alive. One of my pet peeves is the multitude
of “death by PowerPoint” presentations I have to
endure in the workplace – Steve excelled in his
presentations and avoided that cliché.
Is this your first DTM?
This is my first DTM, and it took me five years –
the last two years spent working on the final item
(coaching/mentoring/sponsoring a club)
What encouraging advice would you give to
a toastmaster on their DTM journey? Pay
attention to the leadership track of the DTM and
don’t forget you can tackle aspects of various
educational awards simultaneously, rather than
completing one award at a time. Completing the
required speeches is easy when you look for
opportunities outside your club (other clubs,
speech contests, work, and community events)
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM?
My High Performance Leadership project. I
used my leadership of a group of Toastmaster
volunteers with the Northern Alberta Youth
Leadership Project (NAYLP) for my project.
This included recruiting Toastmaster volunteers,
organizing and conducting youth leadership
programs in Edmonton and area – acting as
chair of NAYLP was challenging but rewarding!
Page 7
Who would you spend a day with to be
coached on speaking or leadership skills?
I would want to be coached by someone who
exemplifies what I do not have a lot of in my
speaking and that is calmness. Perhaps someone
like Gandhi or Bill Clinton, both calm yet powerful.
Is this your first DTM?
This is my first. It took me 41 months. Having said
that, I would add for my first eleven months, I
didn't even know what a DTM was. Once I found
it out, it gave me something to set my sights on. I
found out later that my unofficial mentor was
guiding me on that path without my knowledge.
What encouraging advice would you give to a
toastmaster on their DTM journey?
Of great importance in the journey towards DTM
is the same thing that has great importance in all
things in life. That is to know and consider the big
picture from the start. When you know the big
picture, you are able to pick up pieces that fit the
big picture along the way, even though they might
not match the smaller part of the picture that is
most immediate to your journey.
What was the most rewarding part of your
journey towards DTM?
The sense of accomplishment that came with
each step mounted gave me the thrill of knowing I
was advancing. My first triple crown, then my
second triple crown, my HPL (hard work but
rewarding in the knowledge that not only was it
advancing my DTM but also that it was benefiting
the Mustard Seed and Kids Kottage) and my year
as Area Governor. I fully enjoyed the journey.
Anything else that you would like to make
comment about. I came to a realization while
talking to two new Toastmasters that most
members join with the goal of self-improvement
and a secondary goal of helping others. At some
point the focus changes to giving primary
importance to helping others in their journey with
a secondary goal of advancing personal
achievements.

Can you remember the first table topics question you answered? I clearly remember my most favorite question. I was asked what I thought about organ transplants. I began with a serious discourse and that I was in favour of them. Then, I smoothly slipped in my viewpoint that there were some churches that didn't even have a piano, let alone an organ and if someone had an organ that wasn't being used it was only right and proper that it be donated to one of those unfortunate churches! .

What is the most interesting information you
have used for your introduction?
Probably when I’ve been able to tie in unusual
factoids about myself that are relevant to the
speech but that the audience wouldn’t know about.
What was the most interesting speech you
gave?
Speeches about my polar bear tour guide days and
firefighting stories definitely kept the audience’s
attention! Personal stories and anecdotes (relevant
to your speech of course) will always help make
your talk more interesting!
What was your biggest challenge?
My biggest challenge was obtaining the
coaching/mentoring/sponsoring a club requirement
in my Advanced Leadership Silver award. I kept
mentoring clubs that either disbanded or just didn’t
build enough numbers to charter, so my mentoring
didn’t count. I finally obtained this credit when I
successfully coached a club.

Leadership Lessons We have had many clubs celebrating their
anniversaries – 60 years, 40 years, 20 years and
5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 year! The District Trio is invited
to many of these wonderful occasions. They are
all very special, filled with celebration of
achievements, story-telling and reflection of past
years. Anniversary celebrations have become
part of the clubs’ culture and a demonstration of
pride in accomplishments.
I attended the 5th anniversary celebration at
OEM Speech Wagon in Edmonton. What a
gala event! Loads of celebration and recognition
of achieving President’s Distinguished for the
4th time in 5 years! Keynote speaker Kelly
Parent (who was the Charter President of the
Club) spoke about leadership and with her
permission I share some of her words with you.
“Leadership really is what Toastmasters is
all about. A few years ago I was asked, what
are the advantages to an organization in having
an internal club?
Members will achieve self-directed
growth in both leadership as well as
public speaking and communication –
leading their own development
Development happens over an extended
period of time which ensures lasting
behavior and skill changes that the
organization can depend on – sustained
growth of internal LEADERS
Cross-functional relationships break
down departmental silos. LEADING the
organization to synergy and high
performance
Involvement in the outside TM
community shows the Organization as a
community LEADER
The leadership skill developed by
members builds the pipeline of leaders
any strong organization needs.
At the time… Speech Wagon had seen no
less than 10 members promoted in three
years. Leadership development plain and
simple is the greatest advantage a TM club
can bring to an organization. If you think
about it, even improving in public speaking
to a point where you can captivate an
audience, potentially sway them to your
perspective or entertain through a 5-7 minute
speech you are leading the room for those
5-7 minutes. It really is all about leadership.”
Well said Kelly. And Thank You to OEM
Speech Wagon, to all of our newly chartered
clubs and to all of District 42 for being a part
of “Where Leaders Are Made.”

Marketing and Leadership
The last few weeks were busy getting ready for the
fall conference and arranging for corporate visits in
Edmonton and Calgary with our International
President Distinguished Toastmaster Mohammed
Murad. We are in mid-November now and it feels
like things are picking up!
President Murad arrived in Calgary on November 1
and enjoyed a western welcome from our Calgary
Toastmasters. We were fortunate to have him visit
Edmonton as well. He came to Edmonton on
Sunday evening November 2 and the four of us,
our LGET, Marg Faryna, Shiraz Kanji, President
Murad and I, had dinner together. We discussed
Toastmasters and his vision for Toastmasters
International. Monday was a full day! Past
District Governor Distinguished Toastmaster
Greg Gazin managed to secure a five-minute
interview on CBC’s morning show for President
Murad. I offered to take Greg and President Murad
on a quick tour of the Legislature building as I work
in the building. We got some good photos!
On to the Shaw Conference Center for a lunch
hosted by the Peter Kossowan Communicator
Club which was sold out of course! President
Murad spoke at the lunch and inspired many. He
also spent time speaking with every member who
approached him and also posed for photos with the
members. Many of the photos are posted on the
District 42 Facebook page!
We did have a couple of corporate visits
planned. As luck would have it I managed to
secure a corporate visit with Edmonton
Police Service for Monday afternoon. We
met with a Staff Sergeant who was quite
interested in forming a club within EPS. The
meeting went well especially since
President Murad had been a police officer
for 20 years and could relate to the Staff
Sergeant. Then off to NAIT for a meeting
about a potential staff club. With much
enthusiasm for a club at NAIT they have
scheduled their demonstration meeting
(kick-off) for December 2, 2014.
The District 42 conference was energizing,
entertaining, full of friendship and laughter.
It was wonderful to have President Murad
here to share the weekend with us. He was
gracious with his time and spoke with
every member who approached him. There
were many photos taken! Calgary Mayor
Naheed Nenshi ended his greetings on
behalf of Calgary, during the DTM lunch
celebration, with the “White Hat” ceremony
for President Murad. What a fun event!
When the conference ended President
Murad headed for Las Vegas and we
returned home with promises to meet again
in the spring.
I am grateful for everyone who steps up
and take on tasks for their club, area,
division or the district. I am reminded that I
need only to ask for help because, so far, I
have had resounding replies of, “Yes, I can
help with that!” We have had many
successes in District 42 and I anticipate
many more. Although leading a large district
is very challenging I am confident that we will
continue to work together and strive to help
every member reach his or her potential.

Prairie Horizons Contest Winners!
This year we are also looking at creating a
sense of fun within the District. Keep your
eye out in each edition of Prairie Horizons
since there will be a different contest each
edition.
This started with our Limited 60th
Anniversary Edition released (in print) at the
Fall Conference in Calgary. Members had
to find past Prairie Horizons Editors and
have them sign it.
The winners from the Fall Conference were
Catherine Secundiak, Harvey Taphorn,
Robyn Taphorn and Angie Hung. They all
took home Toastmasters prizes.
Congratulations!
Promoting Toastmasters
Fellow Toastmasters,
Wow! What a great Fall Conference and what a busy
time the PR Team has had in the first four months.
As the PR team we have worked hard to update our
website and keep it updated. Our Webmaster
Geetha Nicodemus has done a lot of great work
to give us a new look to our home page. We have
added the District Dashboard to the homepage so
members can see right away how our District is
doing.
The team has also been working with the clubs to
create Press Releases about Club, Area and
Division events. The hard work that clubs have
been doing has paid off. We have been published
eight plus times since July 1, 2014.
There are a few more contests happening throughout
the year. Some of the contests are The Banner
Contest, The Travelling Gavel Contest and to be
announced in the February 2015 a Facebook
Contest.
There will be specific PR Idea webinars starting in
January 2015 hosted by the PRO. Each webinar will
cater to a different area in the District. For example
one may be on the Regina or Saskatoon areas or
Rural Alberta.

District 42 Reformation – Approved!
The Fall 2014 District Council meeting in
Calgary has overwhelming approved that
our District proceed with reformation
into two Districts. After considerable
consultation and many information sessions
since the summer, the proposal presented
to the members received approval.
The resulting District will see the existing
Divisions of Southern Alberta and
Saskatchewan be one District, and the
Divisions of Northern Alberta and
Saskatchewan will be the other District. All
Clubs in the Red Deer vicinity will be
attached to the Northern District, at their
request
Now that this proposal has been accepted
at the District 42 level, it will be up for
consideration by the International Board
of Directors at their February 2015
meeting. Upon their approval in February
we will launch into an implementation and
transition phase that will potentially see
the two new Districts operational as of
July 2016.
Thanks to everyone for their assistance,
input, direction and feedback during the
consultation process as we considered this
proposal. For additional information, go to

contest season, starting after the Area level.
Both went on to win 1st place in their
respective contests at District 42 Fall
Conference in Calgary. The Division is
extremely proud of both Kevin Safinuk and
Riley Potter for such a strong performance at
the District 42 Fall Conference!

Highlights
Division C is located primarily in downtown
Calgary, extending to the east and south. We
are bordered by Division K to the north,
Division J to the west, Division G to the south
and Division B to the far east. We have 578
members in 31 clubs in six areas. The
majority of the clubs meet over the lunch-hour
with a mix of corporate and open clubs. If
you are in Calgary, stop by to visit one of our
clubs.
Continuing on the theme of Dragons from last
year, we are the aDDVANCe Team this year.
The capital letters are composed from the
first name of our Area Governors: Dawne,
Dan, Virginia, Aparna, Noeline and
Christian. These six Area Governors are on
the ground working with all our clubs. They,
along with the club executives, are moving
our division forward.
We want to welcome our first new club to
Division C this year; Bow Valley College
Toastmasters. They chartered on October
21st and have gotten involved in our division;
they are hosting our Destination DTM on
November 29th at Bow Valley College. Plan
now to attend and see this beautiful facility.
We are working with another potential club
that we hope to charter by the end of
November.
Recent activities include our Fall Speech
Contest, which was a great event.
Great speeches, good food and good
friends made an enjoyable evening. We
also partnered with the other divisions in
Calgary to participate in the Calgary
Immigrant Fair. We had a booth and
made a presentation to the attendees.
There was a lot of interest in
Toastmasters and how we could help
them integrate into Canadian society.

Bitten by the Toastmasters Bug
In 2008, my General Manager, Hal, wouldn’t
stop hounding me to go to Toastmasters. Not a
day went by where he wouldn’t tell me, “You
should go to Toastmasters”. At that time I
was having difficulties at work. My discussions
with certain co-workers often ended up being a
misunderstanding or ended in a conflict. Most
of the time I just kept quiet. I could never
understand why this was happening. Hal kept
pushing me to go to Toastmasters. Finally, I
gave in and attended my first Toastmasters
meeting. I joined Aimcrier Toastmasters in
St. Albert after my second meeting in 2009.
Within a month, I realized that my listening
and communication skills were extremely
weak and this was the root of my problems at
work.
After two years as a member of Aimcriers, I
received a promotion. Part of that promotion
was an opportunity to go back to school. I
had a choice on what I wanted to take. My
choice was to get my Payroll Compliance
Practitioner Certificate. I knew I had to leave
Toastmasters to concentrate 100% on my
studies. When I left Aimcriers I had completed
my CC/CL. I was on a path and thought it was
over.
I was away from Toastmasters for three
years. At first I didn’t realize how important
Toastmasters was to me and how much I
changed in the three years. In April 2014, I
completed school and after my finals the first
thing I thought “I can’t wait to get back to
Toastmasters” for my personal growth and
development.
I returned to Aimcriers. At the third meeting, I
was asked to compete in the Humorous
Speech & Table Topics Competition. I was
extremely uncomfortable and a little afraid I
wasn’t ready for this. I kept finding excuses.
Then, my inner self said, “You have to step
out of your comfort zone”. I quickly said,
“Yes!” I had an excellent time at the Club and
Area contest. I placed 3rd in the Division A
Speech Contest. This was one of the scariest,
but most exhilarating, experiences.
I was voted in as Secretary and the first two
months back before the contest I really
struggled. Then, the executives of our club had
a meeting with our Area Governor Dan
McCosh. At this meeting, Dan inquired if
anyone from our club was working towards
their DTM. I am really not sure why I told him
that this was one of my goals. He really
impressed me, he took the time and told me the
path that needed to be taken and he told me
the most important thing was to get a
mentor.
Two weeks later, I had my first meeting with my
mentor and this changed my whole attitude.
In my opinion, having a mentor is a valuable
asset to any toastmaster. Your mentor is
there to help you when you get discouraged,
offer words of encouragement and wisdom, and
to guide the way. Most important of all, a
returning member or someone who has been
with Toastmasters for a while, you will benefit
by having a mentor.
Page 23
Lessons
1. If you are talking more than 75% of the
time then you are not listening.
2. You are never too old to learn
something new.
3. You have to step out of your comfort
zone.
4. There is nothing to fear than fear itself.

How Toastmasters Benefited Me
My first experience with Toastmasters
was almost 20 years ago in college. I was
sadly only able to complete my icebreaker
speech before I graduated. I went on to
enjoy a busy and successful career until the
birth of my daughter. Looking down into her
eyes, there was nothing I would not give up
to be a stay-at-home mom. During the last
12 years, I have juggled being a proud full-
time mom, taken part-time studies and
worked part-time here and there.
I joined Toastmasters again in the spring
of 2012, I had been out of the full-time
workforce for over a decade. I could
converse well with my toddler son, but I had
no idea what to say to a professional adult.
By now, I was also a Yoga teacher, a Yoga
therapist and a Registered Holistic
Nutritionist. I have blossomed from being a
full-time mom in grubby sweats to a well-
spoken, confident and articulate leader in
my field.
This time around, I was very shy, quiet, and
unsure of myself. Since then, I have
gained my CC, and am now also the VP of
Membership at our club. I have found my
voice, my confidence, and Toastmasters
has given me so many new skills. I am
communicating better with every person in
my life, not just when I get up to speak to a
crowd. I have made heaps of new friends
and contacts, both in my new field and in my
personal life. I am so grateful to be part of
Toastmasters. I am living proof of how
Toastmasters can make confident, goal-
oriented leaders out of us all, regardless of
our backgrounds. I am proud to represent
SOS Toastmasters.

Diving Into Toastmasters Shannon McNainy joined Toastmasters in
the summer of 2014 and dove right in. She
volunteered for the VP Membership
position when a newly-elected VP of
Marketing resigned. She has also moved on
to the Division level in the Humorous
Speech Contest, which is fantastic for such
a new member.
Shannon is a Red Seal chef and brings her
professional skills to the club: she has
cooked as a volunteer for four fundraisers
for her club in the last three months,
raising money to subsidize all the cool things
that the club wants to do. The “Hot Lunch”
fundraisers started out as a simple idea.
The club has a company BBQ and she
thought it would be an easy way to exploit an
underused resource. Their first “Hot Dog
Day” was a success and the club decided to
keep up with the momentum. The following
month, the club introduced “Chili Dog Day”
with homemade chili that they managed to
execute well on the BBQ. October hosted
“Perogy Day” and “Perogy Day 2.0”, back
by popular demand from all of the club’s
supportive co-workers. Shannon’s passion
is cooking and she states: “If my passion is
able to support my Toastmasters club, than I
am more than happy to continue to offer my
culinary services”.

Mentoring is not all Greek to me
PH issue 34-2 November 1999
(Excerpts)
To the ancient Greeks, Mentor was the
loyal friend and advisor of Odysseus.
To modern Toastmasters, a mentor is a
valuable resource that helps members
grow and achieve.
If you are unsure whether your club has
an active mentoring program, then you
may be missing out. Having a mentor
gives you access to another person's
experience. Being a mentor gives you
the satisfaction of helping someone
grow, and exposes you to new ideas
and approaches.
For experienced Toastmasters, an
informal mentor may suffice. New
members tend to be unsure of the
opportunities and may be shy about
asking. It is up to the club executive to
ensure that all new members are
paired up with a mentor. Resources
available in the Toastmasters catalog
include The Successful Club Series
module Mentoring and the Club Mentor
Program Kit. By having members that
are being mentored, the whole club will
be stronger because of their growth.
Whether you are a new Toastmaster or
a very experienced member, a
mentoring program in your club will
have benefits for you. Make sure that
your club has a working program, and as
a result, you could be just as successful
as Odysseus.

How Toastmasters is Helping the Writer
Malene Jorgensen joined Toastmasters in
March of this year with the goal of getting
comfortable with public speaking. Her
boyfriend had tried to encourage her to join
for over a year, because he saw how public
speaking could help her growing career as an
author and entrepreneur. But Malene thought
that her public speaking career was a lost
cause. If she couldn't even introduce herself in
front of a small group of people, how would she
ever speak in front of a large audience?
Malene joined the Prairie Schooners club in
March 2014 and over the summer, she
completed her first six speeches. Her second
speech was about a book she was working on
at the time. Malene had written her eighth
book on self-publishing and she wanted to
show people just how easy it is to get a book
on the market.
“I really wanted to use my speeches from the
CC manual to practice my material – the
material I would use in my speeches for
writers, blogger and entrepreneurs outside
of Toastmasters,” Malene reveals. “If there
was something my club members didn't
understand about the material, I would have
the chance to address the issue.”
Malene has also done speeches on blogging
in her club. She shared her online marketing
Malene has also given speeches on
blogging in her club. She shared her online
marketing ideas during the Executive Training
in Saskatoon, where she did the VP-PR
training in August. In other words,
Toastmasters is a great place for her to test
her ideas in addition to her self-development.
“I love doing the VP-PR role for the Prairie
Schooners. It is such a welcoming place,”
Malene explains. “When I was elected to the
Executive, I had plenty of ideas on how we
could really put the club on the map. I love
how my club members are so supportive of
my crazy ideas.” Since joining, Malene has
created a Twitter account for the club and
started a newsletter to highlight the
accomplishments of the members.
“I have gotten so much out of being a
Toastmaster,” she explains. “Not only have I
gained confidence in my speaking, but my
career has also seen tremendous growth
and I have made some great friends. I
couldn't have done it without my Prairie
Schooners family.” So, she wants to give
something back to her club.
The book, “How to Self-Publish Your Book:
The Ultimate Guide to ISBNs, Print and
Worldwide Sales,” is dedicated to a very
special group; her fellow Prairie Schooners.
“This book is dedicated to the Prairie
Schooners Toastmasters Club. This club
has helped me deal with my fear of public
speaking and has taught me that it is quite
alright to fail in a safe forum. Without you, I
would still be hiding out in fear. Thank you
– to every single one of you,” reads the
dedication.

District 42 Galloping Gavel Kick Off in
Division B
Recently, while in Regina, I had the opportunity
to visit five Division B Toastmasters clubs:
Taxmasters, Club 13, Big Country, Civil
Speakers and Weekend Warriors. I
experienced something new in each club and
discovered ideas that I will share with other
clubs in the District. Some of these include an
“Interpretive Reading Challenge”, a “New
Member Induction Ceremony”, and an
interesting Table Topics Session.
Stepping outside your home club to visit
other Toastmasters Clubs in your Division/Area
can be a very rewarding experience. You will
meet new friends, discover how other clubs
conduct their meetings, hear exciting speeches,
participate in meeting roles and gain experience
that you can take back to your own club.
To encourage District 42 members to step
outside their home club and discover other
Toastmasters clubs in their Division/Area, we
have introduced the Galloping Gavel contest.
Each Division has three Galloping Gavels
that will travel among the clubs in the Division.
If you visit a club that has one of the
Galloping Gavels, carry the Gavel back to your
home club and then encourage other members
in your club to visit a new club accompanied by
the Galloping Gavel. Collect a meeting Agenda
from the club that you visit and take a picture
with the Galloping Gavel and the Club Banner so
that you can verify you have attended the
meeting.
The Division that collects the most Club
Meeting Agendas and submits the most
pictures to our Public Relations Officer, John
Bauer ([email protected]) will win the contest.
Have fun and let us know about your Galloping
Gavel experience.

How Does It Work?
A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-
doing workshop in which participants hone
their speaking and leadership skills in a no-
pressure atmosphere.
There is no instructor in a Toastmasters
meeting. Instead, members evaluate one
another’s presentations. This feedback
process is a key part of the program’s
success.
Meeting participants also give impromptu
talks on assigned topics, conduct meetings
and develop skills related to timekeeping,
grammar and parliamentary procedure.
Members learn communication skills by
working in the Competent Communication
manual, a series of 10 self-paced speaking
assignments designed to instill a basic
foundation in public speaking.
