Letter From the Club PresidentDear Fellow Rotarians,

The RC of Freshwater Bay is one year old and what a fantastic amount of difference collectively we have already made to so many lives during our very first year. Our projects have been diverse, from youth (RYPEN, RYLA, microscopes, equipment for

Manna Industries, organising gifts for Wiluna youth), Vocational (award to Danielle D y s o n ) , C o m m u n i t y (Anawin Refuge, Burundi refugees, Climb for a Smile, progress with Graylands Hosp. garden), International (PolioPlus, Shelter Boxes, Hosp. in Sri Lanka, GSE applicants, Humidity cribs and Resuscitators in Nigeria, support for the Rotary Foundation, sponsoring a Rotary Peace Scholar) to

name but a selection of projects we’ve been involved with thus far.

Thursday 17th Debbie Cash was inducted into the Club. Welcome Debbie and we look forward to a long and happy association with you. Debbie will be primarily looking after the Angel Academy project in Nepal with James. Her mother-in-law is a Rotarian in Texas so another member with an established Rotary link. By the way, the

Barbecue at the Forsdyke’sPlease put Sunday 10th January in your diary as our first ‘official’ meeting for 2010.  It will be in the form of a barbecue in Ellenbrook at the Forsdyke’s.  Claire’s mum will help make salads and members are asked to take their own meat and drinks.  On Thursday, 14th January we return to Bethesda for our regular weekly meetings.

Christmas FunctionThank you to members who brought along guests to help make the evening a success.

Julia Hayes and Garry Bavistock were so inspired by Lyn Beazley they have kindly donated $100 to the club for the microscope project and plan to purchase one or two themselves for the younger members of their family.  Julia is a PP of the Rotary Club of Claremont Cottesloe, which sadly handed back

their Charter and Garry was a Charter member of the Rotaract Club of Subiaco. Our sincere appreciation Julia and Garry for supporting us in every way.

Miracle MomentsPP Jeff Trudgian from the RC of Hillarys came along to tell us a little about how h e came to produce two books of poetry and how all profits from the sales of each ‘Messages from the Guides’ and ‘Miracle Moments’ are going to the RC of Hillarys Dolphin project.   The books are autographed and cost $20 each.  They make a great gift so please consider supporting this great initiative and project.

Jeff and Dawn were to be with us for our function, however, Dawn’s mother was hospitalised Thursday morning so Dawn stayed with her mum while Jeff attended our meeting for a brief while, after which he headed to SCGH, where Dawn’s mum passed away around 10.30pm.   Our condolences to the Trudgian family on their loss.

Manna IndustriesAll the equipment for this project was delivered on Thursday.  When the kitchen has been completed there will be an ‘Official Opening’ to which the club members will be invited.

Tickets for Cliff Richards and the ShadowsPDG Ron & Glenys Geary are heading off to India on 3rd February for a Polio National Immunisation Day.   They have two excellent tickets (Gold Arena floor row E) for Cliff Richards and the

Shadows for Sunday 7th February at 7.30pm at Burswood Dome which they are now unable to use.   The cost of the tickets were $160 each as they were purchased during the pre release period.  If anyone is interested in purchasing these tickets, please contact Di or Ken.

From the District Governor’s DeskDear Fellow Rotarians and friends,

The festive season is nearly with us and Margaret and I would like to wish you all

the best and hope both you and your families enjoy this time together. Our RI President John Kenny and June have sent a similar message to me and asked that I pass it on. I would also like to congratulate everyone on the efforts you have put in so far this year on so many different fronts.

I recently had the pleasure of presenting our outbound youth exchange students with their blazers. I know they will all be great ambassadors for Rotary and thank the committee for their efforts.

Our outbound GSE team are hard at work learning French under the watchful eye of their leader Jim Benson (he is also a student).

As promised on my visits, our Conference Committee

has delivered a marvellous program for you for the 16-18th April 2010 at St Mary's for a most affordable cost. Now is the time to go online and register!

Our Leadership and Training Committee have been busy with a two day workshop

p l a n n i n g o u r p r o g r a m s for next year. A successful R o t a r y Leadership I n s t i t u t e Stage 3 Course has also just b e e n completed.

Early next month our DGE Ian Hutton and Jan leave for San Diego to attend the International Assembly, their final training hurdle before the hard work begins raising the new D9455. We wish them both well and bon voyage.

My   goal to introduce that wonderful Rotary Youth Driver Awareness Program is slowly coming closer to fruition. I encourage other clubs to seriously look at this program and help us save more lives on our roads.

Please stay   safe over the coming weeks as you recharge yourselves for the next six months of Rotary Challenges.

Regards,Geoff Simpson

Rotarians' polio eradication efforts featured in prominent British mediaRotary International News16 December 2009

Prominent British news outlets the Guardian and the BBC highlighted Rotary's role as the top private-sector contributor and volunteer arm of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

In November, Guardian and BBC reporters accompanied a group of 86 British Rotarians on a trip to India to immunize children against polio. The BBC aired a series of stories about the trip and published the article "Presenter Konnie Huq Joins Indian Campaign to End Polio."

On the Guardian's Web site, the article "The Final Push to End Polio in India" praised Rotary's commitment to ending the disease. The story included a photo gallery by photojournalist Jean-Marc Giboux, whose polio-related images have appeared in many Rotary International publications.

The Rotary FoundationWeek 25: This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about micro credit.

In Cuzco, Peru Rotarians contributed $10,000 to a partnering association, Asociacion MIDE, which provided small loans to 288

low-income women. In six months these women improved their businesses and living standards, lifting them out of extreme poverty.

While local Rotarians had the opportunity to work together to develop the project and approve the system of loans, the participants learned to use, administer and benefit from financial credit.

In the process, the women improved their self-esteem as they acquired entirely new ro l e s o f fi n a n c i a l responsibility for their families.

How do I focus my giving? Every Rotarian, Every Year – Giving is hope in action.

DO YOU HAVE TYPE 2 DIABETES

VOLUNTEERS ARE REQUIRED BY THE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND PHARMACOLOGY AT ROYAL PERTH HOSPITAL

Men with type 2 diabetes and abnormal blood fat levels have been shown to have an increased risk of heart disease. We wish to study a group of men with type 2 diabetes to investigate if a cholesterol lowering medication improves the process by which blood fats are circulated and metabolised by the body. This will involve 13 visits to our department over a 38 week period. Blood samples will be collected from you during the study.

WE ARE SEEKING:

• Men aged 18 - 75 • With type 2 diabetes • Using cholesterol lowering medications • Non – smokers

If you are interested in participating in this research, please contact
