Gamma Spectroscopy of 152Eu (2 teams)

Goal: study of 152Eu decay and obtain information on the daughters level schemes.

Method: coincidence measurements of gamma – cascades in daughter nuclei (152Sm and 152Gd).

Material: Germanium detectors – NIM electronics – ISIPEAK acquisition card.

Data analysis: ROOT tools.

Compton interaction study (1 team)

Goal: study the Compton effect, by measuring the energy of the scattered photon, its angular dependency, and its differential cross section.

Method: coincidence measurements between incident and scattered gamma and scattered electron.

Material: NaI(Tl) scintilators – NIM electronics – ISIPEAK acquisition card.

Goal: Start Lab Work in Nuclear PhysicsStudy of gamma decay of different standard sources. Angular correlation measurements for 60Co.Alpha-gamma coincidence.

Method: gamma-gamma and alpha-gamma coincidence measurements.

Material: NaI(Tl) scintilators and Silicon Semiconductor detectors – NIM electronics – ISIPEAK acquisition card.

Cosmic Rays Study (1 team)

Goal: Measure the angular distribution of muons at the surface of the Earth.

Method: muon detection.

Material: plastic scintilators – NIM electronics – ISIPEAK acquisition card.

Data analysis: ROOT tools and Monte Carlo simulations and programming.

Gamma-ray Spectroscopy with AC shields (2 teams)

Goal: Study the performance of HPGe detectors associated with BGO shields.Level scheme and branching ratio for a given standard source.

Method: coincidence measurements.

Material: HPGe/NaI(Tl) detectors and BGO scintillators – NIM electronics – ISIPEAK acquisition card.

Data analysis: ROOT tools.

The aim of the laboratory work is to build one or more experiments using the available equipments to carry out a pre-defined physics measurement.

Five criteria are used in the final evaluation of the student laboratory work:• autonomy and dynamism during the practical work (4 points)• scientific interest for the subject (4 points)• practical work logbook (2 points)• the report (6 points)• oral examination (10 minutes/team) (4 points)

Computer Lab

Purpose: basic training in ROOT and Latex (by M. Ridel and L. Le Guillou)Each student has an IPN account (from 1 Sept 2011 to 1 Sept 2012):

• for login, see list in DEA classroom (normally, first 8 letters of your name)• password: $Achanger (to be changed)

2 groups: advanced and beginners. Need to fill form “Your computer knowledge level”. The groups will be announced on 2nd of September, in the morning.!!! Please add on the form the hour for your medical visit on 5th of Sept (if you know it …) !!!

The dosimeters are individual. They should be kept in the laboratory.

They should be returned on 30th of September to I. Matea.

Need to fill the following form: “Demande de suivi dosimétrie passive”
