Nigerian Universities Staff Sports Association (NUSSA) Games flagging
off at the Unilorin Main Stadium Complex on Friday, September 21, 2018.
NUSSA was established in 1980 to serve as an avenue for social interaction and exchange of ideas among various categories of staff in Nigerian universities.
Already, the 23-member Local Organising Committee set up by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has swung into action towards ensuring a hitch-free hosting of the event by the University.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has encouraged Nigerians to make use of modern ways of cooking, either
domestic or industrial, as against the use of charcoal, which, he said, could lead to deforestation as a result of indiscriminate felling of economic trees .
Prof. Abdulkareem made the call penultimate Friday (July 28, 2018) at a sensitisation programme organised by the University of Ilorin in conjunction with the Regional Centre for Expertise on Education (RCE) for Sustainable Development, Ilorin in Bode Saadu, Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State. . RCE is a unique global development initiative of the United Nations facilitated through the United Nations University Institute of Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), Tokyo, Japan.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented at the event by the Dean of the
stated that using modern ways of cooking like cooking gas, electric cooker and kerosene stove for either industrial or domestic cooking will prevent and stop the indiscriminate cutting of economic trees in the forest.
Prof. Abdulkareem noted that trees are of immense benefits to the country if well taken-care of, pointing out that it will make the environment more conducive and contribute greatly to the nation's economic development.
The Vice-Chancellor called for more enlightenment programmes to sensitise the general public, especially the people living in rural areas, to desist from cutting economic trees for charcoal.
In his own address, the Focal Person of the REC-Ilorin, Prof. Albert Olayemi, said that the aim of the sensitisation outreach is to discuss ideas, problems and issues in the charcoal sector in Kwara State and Nigeria in general.
Prof. Olayemi explained that the programme specifically aimed at finding out the options for those whose livelihood will be affected by the ban on charcoal production as well as identifying the follow-up actions with the policy makers. He said it will also allow the participants to agree on a list of what the issues are and suggest possible solutions on the way out.
In his lecture, entitled “Narratives on Charcoal Production: Its Socio/Economic/Environmental Dimensions”, Dr. Tajudeen Okekunle Amusa of the Department of Forest
Faculty of Education, Prof. Noah Oyedeji,
Resources Management, University of Ilorin, contended that harvesting wood for charcoal production results in deforestation leading to the disappearance of valuable trees including shea-butter and locust-beans trees.
Dr. Amusa said, “Charcoal production uses more wood than direct fuel-wood consumption, about 4-6 times higher”, pointing out that the “traditional earth kiln production technique is fraught with very low conversion efficiency (about 23% conversion efficiency)”.
T h e d o n l i s t e d t h e disadvantages of charcoal production to include lost of animal diversity in many communities owing to indiscriminate removal of vegetation cover that serves as their habitat; and physical and general health dangers faced by charcoal producers when harvesting charcoal from the earth.
Dr. Amusa said, “There are reported cases of people being burnt either in the leg or hands when removing logs and other waste from the hot heaps of coal buried in the earth because sometimes they mistakenly slip into coal where they stand to do it.
“The smoke from the charcoal production also makes the skin itch and causes chest pain during and after the burning. Fumes exuding from the carbonized wet-wood are also poisonous as well as irritating to the eyes. Other health impacts include
irritation such as difficulty in breathing, coughing, tearing in the eyes, fatigue and body aches”.
According to Dr. Amusa, “there are also emerging social issues when loggers from other parts of the country settle in an area to carry out charcoal production. Some of the activities of these settlers have constituted security threats, forced marriages, incidence of HIV/AIDS and in some cases exploitation of the vulnerable within the immediate society”.
In his goodwill message, an Associate Professor and the Acting Head of Mass Communication Department at the University of I l o r i n , D r. A z e e z L u k m a n , commended the RCE for the sensitisation programme on the production of charcoal in the country and its adverse effects on the economic and social lives of the citizens.
Dr. Azeez then urged REC to produce documentaries that will be played on radio and television stations for people in the rural areas to be effectively carried along.
The General Manager of the Kwara S t a t e Env i ronmen ta l Protection Agency (KWEPA), who is also the Oloreke of Oreke Igbo in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the State, Oba Adefila Sunday Joseph, commended the effort of RCE for organising the sensitisation programme and called on the Centre to put in more efforts at educating the public on the disadvantages of deforestation.
Earlier in the day, the RCE team, led by Prof. Olayemi, had paid a courtesy call on the District Head of Bode Saadu, Alhaji Aliu Larongbe Gambari.
The programme was also attended by the Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ilorin Chapter, Dr. Usman Raheem.

The new Dean of the Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Prof. (Mrs.) M. F. Salman, has
condemned the celebration of leaders while they are still in office, saying they should only be appraised and commended, if found worthy, when they have completed their time in office.
Prof. Salman, who is the first female Dean of the Faculty of Education, made the suggestion last Tuesday (July 31, 2018) while taking over the mantle of leadership of the Faculty from Prof. N.B.Oyedeji.
While giving an account of his stewardship, the former Dean, Prof. Oyedeji, thanked every member of the Faculty for their support and
cooperation, which he said made it possible for his modest achievements.
Prof. Oyedeji also thanked the University management for their support, particularly the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, whom he said treated with promptness every memo originating from the Faculty.
Among the achievements of t h e o u t g o n e D e a n w e r e t h e commencement and completion of a new building complex within two years, the successful accreditation of Business Education, Agriculture Study Educa t ion , and Soc ia l S tudy Education.
He was also instrumental to the setting up of a Restructuring
Committee of the Faculty, which has submitted its report to the Vice-Chancellor for further processing.
In his remarks at the hand-over ceremony, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. S u l y m a n A g e A b d u l k a r e e m , congratulated Prof. Oyedeji for a job well done and the new Dean on her election to the highest position in the Faculty, particularly for being the first female Dean of the Faculty.

In his goodwill message, Prof. E. O. Durosaro charged the new Dean
to surpass her p redecessors ' achievements, adding that she should be a motherly and caring Dean without compromising honesty and firmness.
A major highlight of the occasion was the presentation of a Certificate of Excellence to the past Deans of the Faculty.
In her response, during the handover ceremony, Prof. Salman, who noted that leadership is challenging, stressed that the true success or failure of a leader could only be correctly determined after such a leader must have completed his or her tenure.
Expressing the hope that she would be judged well upon the completion of her two-year tenure as
Dean , she congra tu la t ed he r predecessor, Prof. Oyedeji, who, she said, had taken the Faculty to a new level she promised to give her best to sustain and surpass the achievements of the previous Deans of the Faculty.
