WIIFM? Today you will learn:

The importance of your personal brandHow to leverage LinkedIn to tell your storySetting up your winning profileWhy connections matter

Your Brand Matters!

“A brand is a story that is always being told.”

– Scott Bedbury, Brand Consultant and the creator of Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign

Your Personal Brand...Is EVERYTHING!

• It is the practice of people marketing themselves and their careers as brands. The personal-branding concept suggests instead that success comes from self-packaging. - Excerpt from Wikipedia

• It is your reputation, the strength of your network, and what unique value you can contribute to a company or your clients. –Source: Inc.com “What is your Personal Brand”, Marla Tabaka

• Is Yours and no one else’s. Be your authentic self!

Activity: 3 Words

As you think about your brand, what are the top 3 words that would quickly come to mind as others

describe you professionally?

The story you tell should reflect the brand you have. If a new chapter needs to be written, write it!

Establishing your brand on LinkedIn

Your Brand is an investment. Doing the ground work is important!

LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional network!

Your Success Checklist!

Photo: If setting up a new profile, have a professional headshot available or update your current profile if your headshot is not professional or missing? First impressions count!

Connections: Have you taken the time to build your professional network? This is important to do in and outside of your company and is an ongoing process. If you are creating a first time profile, create a list of who you want to connect with in advance so that you can immediately put LinkedIn to work.

Title & Headline: Make sure your profile headline is eye-catching. This is a statement that will sit directly below your photo. Your title should easily translates well to others.

Summary: Do you have a summary and does it effectively represent the sum of your experience, specialty skills, goals and/or aspirations?

Experience: Is each position description robust (3-5 sentences) and does it effectively capture the size and scope of your role?

Your Success Checklist!

Skills: List your most valuable skills in the “Skills & Expertise” Section?

Acronyms: Avoid using company acronyms and company-specific terms?

Multiple Positions at Current Company: If you have held multiple positions at your company, have you listed each? Doing so is recommended because it shows upward mobility as well as lateral opportunity enrichment.

Groups: Are you a member of group(s) that relate to your career path or interests (domain specific, industry specific, alumni specific, diversity specific)? If so, great! Connect with them on Linked In.
