    First, lets look at the designtemplates that are in PowerPoint sothat its clear what we mean bytemplates.

    The task pane has a gallery ofthumbnails that represent theavailable design templates. All youdo is click one of these to apply itsdesign to the slides in your show.

    To create a new template inPowerPoint, you start with one thatsalready there and then modify it asyou choose.

    To give yourself the cleanest slatepossible, start with the designtemplate that PowerPoint defaults toany time you click the New button

    on the Standard toolbar.

    The templates name is DefaultDesign.pot, and although it hasstyles applied already and even hascolor schemes, it uses a very basicdesign.

    So do you just make your changesdirectly in the slide thats displayed?No. You change a special slide calledthe slide master, a kind of workingface for the design template.

    Every design template in PowerPointincludes a slide master. The masterstores the styles for the designtemplate.

    The slide master is the place you goin any presentation to changeaspects of the design thats applied.It sits behind the scenes in its own

    place, called master view.

    1. The slide master shows the styles

    for title text and all levels of bodytext, plus layout, colors, andbackground design.

    2. On a slide in the show, the fonts

    and font styles for the title andbulleted body text reflect thestyles on the master.

    So if you want to change the fontfor the title text in the show, youdjust change the title texts font onthe master.

    While you can change the master toeffect design changes throughoutany presentation, saving thosechanges as a template preservesthem as a design that can beapplied to any presentation.

    Getting to master view

    So to create your template, what arethe steps, exactly? First open a new,blank presentation (New button,Standard toolbar). Then:

    1. Open master view by pointing toMaster on theView menu, andthen clicking Slide Master.

    2. In master view, a thumbnail of

    the slide master appears in theupper left.

    The slide master displays all thefonts and font styles in use,including the title text and five levelsof body text.

    Font refers to the typeface design,such as Times New Roman or Arial.Font Style refers to formatting,such as bold, italic, and small caps.Changing the font on the

    A safe way to go when you choose afont for your template is to use onethat is included with Microsoft Office2003.

    Layout refers to how the variousplaceholders are arranged on theslide. For example, in the DefaultDesign template:

    Moving and resizing a placeholdereffectively changes the slide layout.As the animation shows:

    border, and then point to a sizinghandle on a corner or side. Whenthe pointer becomes a two-headedarrow, drag the handle.

    Vary the design for title slides

    Suppose you open a new, blankpresentation, which by default hasthe Default Design template applied.When you go to master view, thereis one master displayed: the slidemaster.

    But theres another master availabletoo, the title master. Its purpose isto give you additional options for thelook and placement of content onthe title slide (or multiple titleslides) in your show.

    What is the title slide? Any slide inyour show that uses a Title Slidelayout. The default slide in a new,blank presentation has this layout.

    A color scheme applies to thebackground color and the color ofvarious elements on a slide, such asshapes, shape borders and lines,

    and title and body text.
