What is Hazardous Waste????
Hazardous Waste as defined in the Rules
Any waste which by reason of any of its physical,
chemical, reactive, toxic, flammable, explosive or
corrosive characteristics causes danger or is likely to
cause danger to health or environment, whether alone
or when in contact with other wastes or substances.
Categories of Hazardous Waste
Hazardous waste determinations are based upon whether the material is a :
Characteristic Waste (Listed on the D-list or TCLP) A listed waste ( materials specifically identified on
one of the following lists: F, K, U or P lists) Universal waste (batteries; lamps; pesticides; mercury
from thermometers)
Characteristic WastesAny waste which exhibit any characterstics from the
following characterstics considered as characteristics' waste
• Ignitablity (flashpoint is less than 1400 F) includes oxidizers…
• Corrosivity (pH less than or equal to • 2 or greater than or equal to 12.5)
• Reactivity (water reactives, normally unstable materials, cyanides &
sulfides…).
Listed WastesF-listed wastes are from non-specific sourcesK-listed wastes are from specific sourcesU-listed wastes are toxic wastesP-listed wastes are acutely hazardous wastes
Examples of U & P-Listed Wastes U LISTED WASTE P LISTED WASTE
Acetaldehyde Allyl alcohol
Acetone Ammonium vanadate
Acetonitrile Arsenic acid
Aniline Arsenic trioxide
Benzene Carbon disulfide
Bromoform 2,4-Dinitrophenol
1-Butanol Fluorine
Chloroform Nitric oxide
Universal Wastes Universal wastes include the following materials that
are commonly found in the workplace Batteries Fluorescent lamps Pesticides Thermometers (containing mercury)

Comparative HW genertion as per HWM Rules, 1989 and 2003 in ' ooo Tonnes
HW generation as per Rules, 1989 HW generation as per Rules, 2003
Name of the State
HAZARDOUS WASTE GENERATION
EFFECT OF H.W ON HUMAN HEALTH
Humans, plants, and animals can be exposed to hazardous substances through -
Inhalation Ingestion Dermal exposure
Useful methods of Hazardous Waste Management
Minimizing the quantity of waste
Recycling of industrial waste
Treatment of the waste
Collection, transport and disposal of waste in an
environmentally sound manner.
Waste Minimization
This proces is divided in three sub-parts that are –
Process Modification Waste Concentration Waste Segregation
Recycling Industrial Wastes
Waste Reuse Waste Recycling
Collection, Transport and Disposal of hazardous waste
Disposal of hazardous waste can be done in four ways-
Landfill disposal.CompostingDumping at sea
Advantages & Disadvantages of Landfill
Advantages Sanitary landfill No open burning, ultimate disposal Little odour Low water/groundwater pollution Can handle large amounts of wastes, less cost Filled land can be used for other purposes
Disadvantages Noise and traffic Air pollution from toxic gases and volatile organic compounds Releases greenhouse gases (methane and CO2) Can leak and cause groundwater contamination Slow decomposition of waste Encourages waste production
HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES
Guidelines for Occupier/Generator of Hazardous
Waste .
Guidelines for Transportation of Hazardous Waste .
Guidelines for Occupier/Generator of Hazardous Waste .
To keep the complete record of the types, quantities , characterstics of HW.
To transport the Hazardous waste through specified & registered transporters.
To full-fill the pre- transport requirement before transporting HW.
To dispose of HW only at notified disposal facilities.
Guidelines for Transportation of Hazardous Waste .
• To ensure that the occupier/generator transport their hazardous waste only in the specified transport vehicles.
• The transporters should be asked to train the drivers and helpers of hazardous waste transport vehicles to handle the wastes under emergency situations.
