What was responsible for the growing conflict with the Indians in the 1860s?

• Black Kettle tried to work for peace.

• Sioux, Arapaho, Kiowa and Comanche and Cheyenne.

• War until 1868 – cost $30m

• The Indians now had guns

• 1867: Peace at Medicine Lodge Creek. Settle permanently on the reservations. Red Cloud (Sioux) refused to admit defeat.

What was responsible for the growing conflict with the Indians in the 1860s?

• Homesteaders and gold-miners came onto the plains after 1862.

• A new trail was set up to make their journey easier – but it went through the Sioux hunting grounds.

• Red Cloud tried to stop this as it went against the Fort Laramie Treaty and attacked travellers.

• The government talked with Red Cloud but, at the same time, started to build forts to protect the trail.

• Red Cloud stopped the talks and he, Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull agreed to attack travellers until they stopped coming.

• In Dec 1866 100 soldiers led by Captain Fetterman were killed by the Sioux and the army withdrew.

What was responsible for the growing conflict with the Indians in the 1860s?

• 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty: Created the Great Sioux reservation. White settlers could not enter these lands. Not all the Sioux chiefs agreed: Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull.

• US realised the Indians never fought in winter.• 1869 Cheyenne restarted their attacks on settlers.• Custer and Sheridan mounted a surprise attack

on Black Kettler’s village nr. Wishita river. Battle of Washchita.

• Black Kettle flew the white flag of peace – the Indians were sleeping when they were attacked. Black Kettle and his wife were killed.

• Cheyenne, Arapaho and Comanche forced back onto reservations.

• Medicine Creek Treaty changed, Indians couldn’t leave the reservations to hunt.

What was responsible for the growing conflict with the Indians in the 1860s?

Exterminators Humanitarians

Many army officers: Chivington, Sheridan wanted to get rid of Indians altogether.

Wanted the US Army to solve the ‘Indian problem’.

Wanted to take revenge for Indian attacks.

Believed attacking the Indians would only make them more angry.

Believed the government should put Indians onto reservations.

Wanted the Indians to end up living like White people. To help this they slaughtered the Buffalo.
