Goal setting is extremely important to a performer.
By setting out staged and achievable goals, a coach or teacher can keep a performer motivated.

As a performer, knowing what you have to do at each stage can give you an element of control and can help to reduce the possibility of boredom with a training routine.
Goals can help a performer work hard and keep focused on a task, giving them a better chance to improve their fitness and skills.

Reaching a specific target shows an athlete’s physical progress.

Short-term goals
Short-term goals are often set in training programmes and can act as incentives to train hard as targets can be reached quickly.
They can also work as a signpost, indicating the performer is on target for success.

For example, an athlete might:
•Train hard to achieve a good distance which qualifies them for an event.
•Win that event.
•Then be selected for the county team.
•Then be selected to represent the county in a competition.

There are two types of sporting goals:1. Outcome Goals, which are linked
to results of performance in competition.
2. Performance Goals, which are concerned with previous performances, such as being good enough to run for the country or to be selected for the Olympics.
