Powering Seattle through the 21st Century
Denny Substation Program
QUARTERLY REPORT 4 T H Q UA R T E R | 2 0 1 6
INSIDE: MEMORABLE MOMENTS | PUBLIC OUTREACH | JUMPING AHEAD IN 2017
GOING VERTICALThe Denny Substation Program has seen major construction gains in 2016! Since February, Denny Network crews have installed ten underground electrical vaults and 6,000 feet of duct bank throughout the South Lake Union and Denny Triangle neighborhoods. The substation construction site, which was an empty lot earlier this year, is now bustling with construction as the Denny Substation takes shape. This vital and exciting facility will support the city’s rapid growth, help fuel the local economy, and enhance the neighborhood with new parks and open spaces, an off-leash area, a community meeting space, and public art. It will also provide improved reliability and system flexibility, benefiting customers both in and beyond the project area. Completion of both the Denny Network and Substation is expected in mid-2018—the “World’s Coolest Substation” is within reach!
The Denny Substation team is excited about the progress and owes a big thank you to the residents, community groups, neighboring businesses, organizations, and commuters for their ongoing patience and understanding.
May 2016: Substation construction began.
December 2016: Substation outer walls began to take shape.
Mid-2018: Rendering of what the completed substation will look like.

Q1: JANUARY– MARCHLATE 2015 TO JANUARY 2016: In order to help the community get ready for Denny Network construction, the City Light Construction Communications team went door-to-door, informing 219 commercial, residential and non-profit community members throughout South Lake Union and Denny Triangle neighborhoods about construction and its potential impacts.
FEBRUARY: Construction of the network (electrical vault and duct bank installation) began on Minor Ave and Stewart St
MARCH: The first electrical vault was installed underground on Stewart St between Minor and Boren avenues. Approximately 32 vaults will be installed for the Denny Network project.

DECEMBER: The substation’s elevated walkway, which will be accessible to the public, began to take shape along Denny Way and the alley.

JUMPING AHEAD IN 2017In 2017, Seattle City Light will accelerate construction of the substation. You can expect to see the structure’s façade come to life as cladding begins to cover the outer walls. Electrical equipment will begin to fill the interior of the facility too, moving the vision of this awesome project closer to reality.
The Denny Network construction contractor will complete work in the Denny Triangle neighborhood and progress through the South Lake Union neighborhood with preconstruction activities such as potholing, installation of vaults and duct banks, and street restoration.
