Attracting Tomorrow
Drivers for ubiquitous touchscreens and touch surfaces • Miniaturization of devices and applications • Need for multifunctional interfaces • Protection against wet, dirty or aggressive environments • Easy cleaning, disinfection • Low maintenance • Easy to reconfigure • Reduced design and hardware costs
Touchscreens need the haptic dimension
But ... • Operating elements not perceptible to touch • Haptic feedback missing • Users must look at devices to operate them • More input mistakes and reduced safety
Strong trend toward implementing haptics, especially in automotive applications, smartphones, home appliances,
game consoles and machine control elements
Human-machine interface

Attracting Tomorrow
Today’s technologies for haptic HMIs
Eccentric rotary mass (ERM)
Linear resonant actuators (LRA)
Piezo disks and benders
Off-center rotating mass spins, creating an omni-directional vibration
Magnet attached to a spring, surrounded by a coil and housed in a casing, moves in a linear fashion and brought up to the resonant frequency
Piezoelectric ceramic material that expands or contracts when voltage is applied
Modulation limited to pulsing and speed
Modulation limited to amplitude of input at resonant frequency
Frequency and amplitude can be modulated freely
Vibration of entire device (global)
Vibration of entire device (global)
Vibration of entire device (global) and more localized haptics

z
The cymbal acts as a lever to convert the contraction of the x- and y-axes into amplified displacement in the z-axis
When voltage is applied to the piezo plate • Small displacement (expansion) in the z-axis of the piezo plate of only ≈1.5 µm • But negative displacement (contraction) in x- and y-axes of the piezo plates of ≈13 µm
and 6.5 µm, respectively, due to the volume constant piezo effect.
