I’m thrilled to welcome you to the Choral Society’s 2019–2020 season — a season where tradition and novelty meet to offer an incomparable array of musical expression. We begin with Verdi’s powerful and dramatic Requiem under the inspiring leadership of Maestro Alexander Shelley. The OCS is thrilled to be providing the chorus for this electrifying masterwork where the sacred and the theatre join in perfect harmony. In November, I’m excited to present an unconventional performance of Handel’s beloved oratorio, Messiah. Our performance challenges gender-role expectations by reassigning the solos to singers of the opposite sex — a unique and slightly provocative version of Messiah addressing 21st-century preoccupations. The second half of our season features two premieres for the Ottawa region. In March, we invite you to experience the dramatic power of Annelies by English composer James Whitbourn who sets to music excerpts from the diary of Anne Frank. Finally, our 79th season will close in June with the thrilling Latin flair of Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires (Misatango) for chorus, mezzo-soprano, strings and bandoneon. This final concert is the perfect occasion to celebrate the beginning of summer with sensual melodies and exuberant dance rhythms — an evening not to be missed!Please join us in 2019–2020 to be inspired by the passion and dedication of the Ottawa Choral Society.

Je suis ravi de vous présenter la saison 2019–2020 de la Société chorale d’Ottawa — une saison où tradition et nouveauté coexistent pour offrir une palette d’expressions musicales incomparable. Nous commencerons avec le puissant et dramatique Requiem de Verdi sous la baguette inspirante de maestro Alexander Shelley. Les choristes de la SCO sont enchantés à l’idée d’interpréter ce chef d’œuvre électrisant où le sacré et le théâtre sont en parfaite harmonie. En novembre, nous aurons le plaisir de vous présenter une version non conventionnelle du Messie, le célébrissime oratorio de Haendel. Pour cette prestation, nous inverserons les rôles de genres en attribuant les solos à des chanteurs du sexe opposé — une version unique et un tant soit peu provocante du Messie, en lien avec les préoccupations du 21e siècle. La deuxième moitié de notre saison mettra en lumière deux créations jamais encore présentées dans la région d’Ottawa. En mars, nous vous invitons à vivre le pouvoir saisissant d’Annelies du compositeur britannique James Whitbourn, qui a mis en musique des extraits du journal d’Anne Frank. Enfin, notre 79e saison se terminera en juin avec l’exubérante Misa a Buenos Aires (Misatango) de Palmeri pour chœur, mezzo-soprano, cordes et bandonéon. Ce dernier concert sera l’occasion idéale pour célébrer le début de l’été avec ses mélodies sensuelles et ses rythmes de danse endiablés — bref, une soirée à ne pas manquer!Joignez-vous à nous en 2019–2020! Giuseppe Verdi’s universally beloved work has not only found its voice in the magnificent cathedrals and concert halls of the world but was also sung by defiant prisoners in the WWII concentration camp at Terezin. Verdi’s sublime melodies, his rhythmic drive, and his dramatic contrasts express the intense emotions engendered by human dread of consuming hellfire, and hope of an eternal paradise.“... The Dies Irae would have raised the hackles on a dead man. This concert delivered on the fireworks.” (Ottawa Citizen, 2015)

Cette œuvre de Giuseppe Verdi a certes été interprétée dans de magnifiques cathédrales et des salles de concerts partout dans le monde, mais elle a aussi été chantée par des prisonniers du camp de concentration de Terezin. Les sublimes mélodies de Verdi, la tension viscérale du rythme et les contrastes dramatiques reflètent l’intensité des émotions que suscitent la peur de brûler en enfer, et l’espoir de connaître le paradis éternel.« ... A slightly audacious, gender-bending version of Handel’s sacred oratorio that plays with the idea of role reversal. Ever wonder how ‘Rejoice Greatly’ would sound performed by a tenor, or ‘Every Valley’ performed by a soprano? For our Messiah, Jean-Sébastien has invited four of Canada’s most exciting concert artists to do just what Handel himself often did in re-assigning the solo roles to various voices. A Messiah for the 21st century that tells the eternal story in a new way and thrills you with glorious choral sound!

Une version légèrement audacieuse de l’oratorio sacré de Haendel qui s’amuse à inverser les rôles. Vous êtes-vous déjà demandé à quoi ressemblerait Rejoice Greatly interprété par un ténor, ou encore Every Valley chanté par une soprano? Pour notre Messie, Jean-Sébastien a invité quatre des plus brillants concertistes du Canada à faire ce que Haendel lui-même faisait souvent, attribuer les rôles de soliste à divers registres de voix.Un Messie adapté au 21e siècle, une histoire intemporelle accompagnée par la glorieuse puissance d’un chœur symphonique.

It is so easy to forget that Anne Frank (Annelies was her full name) was not just a historical figure. Like most youngsters, she had her personal heroes — she kept a photograph of Britain’s Princess Elizabeth pinned to the wall next to her bed. The legacy of Anne’s diary and her death has been profound. Courageous and intelligent, she would have turned 90 this year — but Anne did not get to grow up and become a little old lady. An exquisitely layered masterpiece in which Whitbourn uses his instrumental and vocal forces to superb effect. “... woundingly beautiful ...” (The Daily Telegraph)

Il est très facile d’oublier qu’Annelies, mieux connue sous le nom d’Anne Frank, était plus qu’une figure historique. Comme la plupart des jeunes de son âge, elle avait ses propres héros; par exemple la photo de la Princesse Elizabeth de Grande Bretagne était épinglée à côté de son lit. The erotic dance music of the bordello found its way into the respectable salons of Parisian society and the inner sanctum of the chancel with the evolution of Astor Piazzolla’s fusion of classical and jazz forms known as tango nuevo. We are excited to welcome charismatic mezzo-soprano and CBC Radio host Julie Nesrallah to perform Misa a Buenos Aires, a setting of the traditional Catholic Mass that explodes with exuberance and the aching melancholy that is at the very soul of the tango. Also on the program, a Magnificat by Stephen Chatman (1950–) nominated for Best Classical Composition at the 2014 JUNO Awards.

La musique de danse érotique associée aux lieux de débauche a trouvé sa place dans les salons respectables de la société et dans les sanctuaires du culte depuis qu’Astor Piazzolla y a intégré des formes classiques et du jazz. Il a créé ce qu’on appelle maintenant le tango nuevo.  Nous sommes ravis d’accueillir la mezzo-soprano charismatique et animatrice sur les ondes de la CBC, Julie Nesrallah, pour interpréter la Misa a Buenos Aires, une version de la messe catholique traditionnelle qui explose d’exubérance et de douloureuse mélancolie, lesquelles sont au cœur même du tango. Également au programme, un Magnificat de Stephen Chatman (1950–), en nomination pour la meilleure Composition classique au Prix JUNO 2014.
