Poultry Vocabulary: Cock : Male chicken Tom : Male Turkey Hen : Female Pullett : Female under six months, non laying Capon : Neutered male chicken Broiler : Raised for meat Layer : Egg production Gestation : Chicken: 21 d; Turkey 28 d Production : usually 1 egg per day Comb : Red tissue on top of head Wattle : Red tissue hanging under beak Brooding : the raising of baby chicks

Getting Started Purchase chicks from a feed store or hatchery. When buying chicks, know a bit about the breeds: Some breeds are better suited for meat production. Others are better for egg production. There are also "dual purpose breeds These breeds are adequate for both meat and laying. Many who raise dual purpose breeds will keep the hens for eggs and use the males for meat.

Raising Chicks Keep chicks at 90-95F until about six weeks of age. At six weeks, decrease the temperature 5 degrees per week until you reach 70 degrees.

Supplement heat thereafter if temperatures go below 70. If chicks are scattered around the brooding area and are making content sounds they are comfortable. If they are huddled and peeping loudly, they need more heat.

Water should always be available for all poultry. It should be provided in a container that does not allow them to get in the water.

Handmade Brooder

Feeding Rations for chicks are about the same regardless of whether the chicks are to be raised for meat or egg production. Rations are formulated differently for adult poultry depending on the purpose. Broiler stock (meat) needs only feeders and waterers for adequate growth.

Housing Poultry A poultry house provides protection the elements. It must have good ventilation: This circulates air and keeps the house dry. Dry litter should cover the ground to prevent the stock from standing in moisture. Separate housing is essential for poultry of significant age difference.

Facilities Egg production flocks will need a nesting facility. One nest for every four hens usually is appropriate. Poultry houses do not need roosts. Provide "litter" on the floor to keep stock dry. If litter becomes wet, replace it with dry material.
