Welcome to SOAS!This is your guide to Welcome Week and includes all the information you need to get your studies underway. Welcome Week is when you officially enrol at SOAS and get the opportunity to meet academic staff and other new students.

Getting Enrolled: This is the most important part of welcome week for you to get enrolled as a SOAS student. Please make a note of when your enrolment session is and attend it. Please ensure that you have completed online enrolment prior to this. These will be in Yellow colour.

Getting Connected: All the activities revolve around getting familiar with the content, people and details of your programme of study. It includes meeting with academics, tutors and convenors and meeting fellow students in the same programme. These will be in Pink colour.

Getting Started: Series of events that helps you get familiar with the support services and facilities that are available in and around SOAS. This includes meeting the staff from these services and finding out what is available for you. These will be in Red colour.

Getting Involved: Your opportunity to participate in activities at SOAS. They are social, interactive and an opportunity to get right into student life at SOAS. These will be in Blue colour.

In addition to these, the Students’ Union has its own events scheduled that can be found on soasunion.org.

You are now part of a thriving student community of nearly 8,000 students. Over a half of you are undergraduates and the rest of you will be engaged in postgraduate study, either taught or research.

SOAS is a truly cosmopolitan institution. We have one of the highest percentages of international students in the world and we have a network that spans across the globe – through our academic partnerships, high-impact research in

our regions and our alumni network of over 100,000 former students.

It is often said that wherever you go in the world, you will come across a SOAS alum. We are proud that our former students go out into the world to make a difference; but, for now, you can meet the world at SOAS. Amazing people – students, teachers, scholars – right here in the heart of London, one of the greatest cities on earth. Enjoy every minute.

Making the most of Welcome Week 2017

All welcome week activities are colour coded and divided into four categories to help you plan your week:

Page 3: Postgraduate Taught WELCOME TO SOAS · 150 entirely student-run societies, ranging from religion to politics to music to sports. But it also means representing you and being there

Students’ Union

That means organising events, and providing a bar, a coffee shop and over 150 entirely student-run societies, ranging from religion to politics to music to sports. But it also means representing you and being there when things are difficult. Four full-time and fifteen part-time officers work to make sure students from all walks of life have a voice. In our monthly Union General Meetings every student has a chance to decide what we put our effort and resources into. Meanwhile the Course Representative system makes sure every class has a channel through which to bring their concerns to academics and management. Our office is room G8 – come and see us anytime, and pick up an Students’ Union handbook to learn more.

There will be several Students’ Union Events during Welcome Week and full details of these and other events can be found at www.soasunion.org

School EventsYou are encouraged to attend as many of the general school events as you can and want across the week. Some events are repeated, so in case something clashes, check whether you can attend another session.

We offer workshops and one-to-one tutorials, as well as a range of resources ble.soas.ac.uk and www.soas.ac.uk/add/studyskills. Throughout Welcome Week, tutors will be available for drop-in sessions in the Student Hub of Paul Webley Wing to get a taste of what the service involves; this opportunity will allow you to speak about the study skills required for your upcoming studies at SOAS.

Academic Guidance FairCome and speak to academics in the Cloister, Paul Webley Wing if you have any final queries with your module choices. It will take place 11:00 - 15:00 on Wednesday 27 September.

SOAS CareersThink it’s too early to think about your career? Think again! Did you know the main reason students tell us why they don’t visit the Careers Service is that they don’t know what they want to do?

Over the first two weeks of term, SOAS Careers will be running some ‘top tips’ workshops to help you, no matter where you are in your career thinking. We’ll cover subjects like how to get part time work while studying, how to find work as an international student, how to start thinking about your career planning, how to network with SOAS alumni, how to make full use of your academic skills in your research about careers, as well as showing you how to access one of the UK’s best set of online Career support resources, designed to support your career thinking no matter where it is.

For access to all top tips workshops, which will last approximately 30 minutes each, please click here: https://mysoas.sharepoint.com/sites/student/teams/car/Pages/Careers-Events.aspx or visit us in person in SL62 in the Paul Webley Wing.
