INDIVIDUAL INTEGRATED RESEARCH PROJECT

1. GENERAL GUIDELINES

1.1 STUDENT/YOUR ATTENDANCE

Your attendance for The Research for Strategic Decision (RSD) is Compulsory. The

foundation for planning and conducting research methodology will be covered during the

first four sessions and the Module Lecturer will guide you how to select an appropriate

research topic.

1.2 STUDENT/YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

a. Maintain a proper Log Book for the regular meetings with the supervisor and get all

entries signed by the supervisor.

b. Maintain the progress of the study according to the agreed times and schedule with

your supervisor.

c. When conducting your research, adhere to the ethical practices, rules and regulations,

pertaining to the chosen institute and the industry.

d. Ensure that original data is valid and appropriate referenced form and stored for a

period appropriate to the discipline.

e. Prepare your research proposal, executive report according to the required type of

typing and formatting, and bind it in the required standards. Your supervisor must look

into the final piece of work before you submit the work

All students are requested to check your emails regularly since all communication will be

done via the Email addresses which you have given in the research registration

application.

1.3 CONTINUING RESEARCH PROJECT

If you fail to submit the research proposal or report on the given date by SLIM, you will

have to repeat the entire processes by joining the next batch.

1.4. TRANSFERS

If you are not be able to complete the Research Project within one year (Two

consecutive semesters) or if you fail at the examination or your Final Research, you

have to register again as a fresh student for the immediate intake for the Integrated

Research Project by paying LKR 20,000. Furthermore, you will have to continue the

student registration and membership. Previous payments will not be carried forward

under any circumstances.

Please note that above payment transfer will not applicable if you fail at the

examination.

1.5 PLAGIARISM: ACADEMIC HONESTY

Plagiarism can be identified as taking the work of other people and using it as if it were

one’s own in such a way as to mislead the reading party. This generally, takes place

when whole pieces of work or part pieces (Paragraph, Chapter, Module, etc.) are lifted

from various sources without proper acknowledgement.

Recourse to the services of ‘ghost-writing’ agencies (for example in the preparation of

essays or reports) or of outside agencies which offer ‘correction or improvement of

English’ is strictly forbidden, and if students make use of the services of such agencies

they are liable for an academic penalty.

Use of unacknowledged information downloaded from the internet also constitutes

plagiarism. Where part of an examination consists of assignments and presentations

needs students own time, work submitted should be their own. For some assessments

it is also illicit to reproduce material which students have used in other work/assessment

of the same program.

Any sort of deliberate attempt to mislead the Examiners of the Sri Lanka Institute of

Marketing is regarded as cheating and is treated very severely by the Council of

Education. Those research works will be marked as failed.

INDIVIDUAL INTEGRATED RESEARCH PROJECT PROCESS

STEP ONE

SELECTING THE RESEARCH TOPIC

a. The topic needed to be selected based on a research problem. Appropriate

marketing or business sector/industry can be selected.

b. Once the topic is being selected submit it to the module coordinator via email

([email protected]) to allocate your research supervisor.

c. Research supervisor will be allocated based on the industry or the field student has

selected.

d. Contact details of the research supervisor will be sent within two weeks of receiving

the research topic to SLIM.

e. If necessary upon your request SLIM will issue you a letter to respective institutions

for collecting data.

Please note students cannot select or conduct any research on SRI LANKA INSTITUTE OF

MARKETING on ethical grounds.

STEP TWO

ALLOCATION OF RESEARCH SUPERVISORS

a. It is important to remember that the supervisor is there only to guide you in the correct

direction. He/she can suggest, guide, and advice the research methodology that you

should follow, the sources of data collection, and the assist you in analysing the data.

b. You cannot expect the supervisor to physically conduct the research on your behalf.

c. Maintain regular contacts with the supervisor to receive guidance throughout the study

period in way of meetings, telephone calls, or other appropriate mode of communication.

d. You need to maintain a Log Book for the meetings that you have with your supervisor

and key points discussed must be noted. Each entry that you make in the log book must

be signed by your supervisor.

e. Progress of the study needs to be assessed by the research supervisor during regular

intervals. For example, once you complete the literature review you can present it to the

supervisor for approval.

Note: Literature review for the proposal should have at least 6-8 literature

presentation of the research proposal and they have to get log sheets signed at the

every meeting.

Finalising Research Proposal:

Your Research Supervisor should approve research proposal report prior to the

research proposal presentation.

STEP FOUR

PROPOSAL PRESENTATION

Students are expected to present approved proposal by the supervisor before a panel of

evaluators. SLIM Education Division will declare dates for the presentation at the inception

of each intake. A panel appointed by the Council of Education will evaluate your proposal

which may result in receiving remarks about the proposal and instructions to carry out the

research.

CONDUCT THE RESEARCH WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE RESEARCH SUPERVISOR

From the day of the proposal approval, students will be given approximately 2 ½ months

periods of time to complete the project with the assistance of assigned supervisors.

Students need to meet their supervisors at least SIX times and they have to get log sheets

signed at the every meeting.

GUIDELINE FOR DEVELOPING THE RESEARCH PROJECT

I. Within the first month, students are required to complete the first three chapters:

a. Introduction b. Methodology c. Literature review

II. Within the second month, students are required to complete Data presentation, analysis and finding

III. In the final month, students needed to complete conclusion and recommendations

In the log sheet provided students need to get the signature from the supervisor by

confirming that you have completed highlighted tasks in each month. Otherwise whatever a

good research project submitted finally SLIM has the right to reject it at any time.

After completing research report during the above time period under the proper guidance

of the relevant supervisor, each student should submit the research project report (two

spiral bound copies) to SLIM with the approval/signature of supervisor

EXECUTIVE REPORT

1. An Executive Report?

An Executive Report is a report written by a student/a group of students of an

academic/professional programme as a part of the assessment of performance of the

student/s and addresses a managerial/organisational problem/issue with the purpose of

making appropriate recommendations to solve the problem. Accordingly, the following

characteristics can be identified.

1.1. A report written by a student/a group of students of an academic/professional

programme as a part of the assessment of the performance of the student/s.

1.2. The executive report addresses the managerial/organisational problem/issue with

the purpose of making appropriate recommendations to solve the problem/issue.

1.3. The student/the group of students must take a managerial orientation

Eg: Apply existing knowledge to solve the practical problem and approach their

work systematically/scientifically. Accordingly, in contrast to academic research of

which the purpose is accumulation of knowledge, the purpose of an executive

report is to utilise the existing knowledge to solve a real life

managerial/organisational problem.

1.4. The executive report is an academic/professional exercise rather than a report

produced by the manager(s) who attempt to solve the real life problem. However,

the student is expected to think as a manager who is handling the real life

managerial/organisational problem. Accordingly, certain areas such as the literature

review which are not seen in a real life managerial report can be seen in the

executive report.

1.5. The executive report presents information about the problem and also the

answers/recommendations with the purpose of presenting solutions on the

problem. Accordingly, the executive report, unlike research or term papers, is

descriptive rather than argumentative, though the student has to maintain an

appropriate argumentative tone justifying his recommendations and analysing the

problem. Yet, similar to research or term papers, the executive report is an

essentially an analytical piece of work.

1.6. The three main criteria used in evaluating an executive report are:

a) How systematic/scientific the work is

b) Soundness of recommendations,

c) Quality of the presentation.

However, it should be noted that the first two criteria are interconnected due to the

fact that the soundness of recommendations is highly dependent on the

systematic/scientific level of the work. Further, the quality of presentation is

dependent on the ability of student to meet the standards set by the

academic/professional institute for the presentation of students’ work.

2. The Content of the Executive Report/ Research Report

You can recognise and express thanks to all parties who helped in writing the

executive report including among other things data collection.

2.4 Table of Contents

It should have the heading – Table of Contents – and be centre aligned, all the

headings of the report including second and third level headings should be shown

with their respective page numbers. While the second level heading should be

separated by two spaces from the first heading, the third level heading should be

separated again by two spaces from the second level heading. The heading of the

page and all first level headings including their respective page numbers should be

made bold, the headings and their respective page numbers should be left aligned

and right aligned respectively.

2.5 List of Figures

It should have the heading – List of Figures – and be centre aligned, and all the

headings of the figures along with figure numbers and respective page numbers of

figures should be given. The figure number should be given first followed by the

heading of the figure; the headings and their respective page numbers should be

left aligned and right aligned respectively.

2.6 List of Tables

It should have the heading – List of Tables – and be centre aligned, while all the

headings of the tables along with table numbers and respective page numbers of

tables should be given. The table number should be given first followed by the

heading of the table; the headings and their respective page numbers should be left

aligned and right aligned respectively.

2.7 Abstract

It is similar to an abstract and a brief summary of your entire project. It often helps

a reader to quickly ascertain the project report purpose. You may form three

paragraphs in which you provide a comprehensive and essentially brief description

about the background, problem and the objective of the project, a brief description

of the methods used, hypothesis tested if there are, the conclusions reached and

recommendations.

2.8 Content of the Research Report

a. Chapter One

Introduction – This should include the background of the problem,

establishment of the problem or explaining ‘what it is’ that you are interested

in examining, significance/rational of exploration of problem, objectives of

the report, approach to data collection and analysis, broad recommendations

including their delimitations, and the outline of the report.

b. Chapter Two

Literature Review – Used to discuss the theoretical basis of your problem and

your recommendations for it. You may utilise this to discuss the definitions of

concepts involved in your study and their interactions and to demonstrate

your thorough understanding of the theoretical basis of your study.

c. Chapter Thee

Methodology – This includes identification of the variables of the problem

and their relationships (or conceptualization), identifying the ways and means

of converting those variables into observable entities (or operationalisation)

and finally designing the ways and means of data collection and analysis. In

the first sub-section-conceptualisation, you may clearly describe the factors

that cause the problem and the facets of the problem and then explain

interrelationships among causes and the problems or its facets. If possible,

you may show these interactions graphically too. In the second sub-section,

operationalisation, you may describe how you observe and measure the

problem and the factors/causes including a brief description of your data

collection instrument.

instrument into this section; instead you may provide it as an appendix to the

report. Finally, you may describe;

How you analyse and present them in the executive report

d. Chapter Four

Data Presentation and analysis – This is a relatively lengthy section and you

may present your data in different ways such as tables and charts, in a way

that the data ‘tells’ the story of your problem while illuminating the

alternative solutions to the problem. You are also recommended to use

statistical analysis like correlations and regression, if you are familiar with

them. Finally, you may end this section by discussing briefly the findings of

your study, if necessary in the light of the literature.

e. Chapter Five

Conclusion and recommendations – Again a relatively short section. In this

section, you first summarise your problem and the study which will follow the

conclusions that you draw from the findings. Then you may present your

recommendations, and each recommendation should be briefly justified

while explaining possible consequences, if any.

f. List of References - Similar to the individual / group assignments that you have

done for the core subjects of the Postgraduate Diploma, you will have to

indicate a list of all sources that you have used directly in the body of your

executive report. This must be arranged in alphabetical order, following the

Harvard System.

g. Annexure - It is not possible to include all the details of your study in the

report, because it would then be exceptionally bulky and the panel of

assessment will not be able to grasp its essence. Therefore, leaving the

necessary and relevant details in the body of the executive report, the

supporting details such as questionnaires, interviews/discussions, tabulation

tables etc. should be included as appendices. Further it must be noted that

appendices should not be lengthier than the body of the report and should

not contribute to the count of length.

2.9 LENGTH OF THE FINAL RESEARCH REPORT

The length of the final research report should be minimum 6000

STEP EIGHT

VIVA DEFENSE

The ability of the student to demonstrate the summary of the entire study within given time

frame will be essentially evaluated at the VIVA. Students have to prepare a PowerPoint

presentation as per the time allocation.

General Preparation

Presentation of conclusion based on key findings and objectives of the

research

The panel of assessment will be instructed not to deviate from given time period under any

conditions.

After the Viva presentation, the student should submit their Final Hard Bound copies (02) of

the Research Report with the necessary alterations/changes which were pointed out /

instructed by the Viva presentation evaluation panel.
