PROPOSED ROAD CLOSING

A Tweed community walking group has celebrated half a decade and many kilometres of active striding for improved health.

The Banora Point Walking Group held a breakfast recently to celebrate its fifth anniversary and honour its pioneers and stalwarts.

The group meets at the Banora Point Community Centre each Wednesday morning at 7am and 40 of its members gathered for their milestone anniversary walk.

They were joined by Council’s Director of Community and Natural Resources, Tracey Stinson, who presented certificates to 13 participants who completed the inaugural walk and have walked consistently throughout the five years. A water bottle was given to each participant to mark the occasion.

Banora Point Walking Group is supported by Council and is part of a Heart Foundation national network of free walking groups coordinated by volunteer leaders.

“The leaders do a fantastic job organising the walks and ensuring they are safe for participants,” Ms Stinson said.

“Our leaders for the Banora Point group have been in their roles since they completed their training and induction in 2011.”

The Banora Point walking group coordinator, Council Project Support Officer Lyn Porter, was honoured with a NSW Golden Shoe Award in 2014, nominated by the leaders for her commitment to Heart Foundation Walking.

Tweed Shire also has Heart Foundation Walking groups at Tweed Heads, Tumbulgum and Murwillumbah.

Celebrate the environmentThe Northern Rivers is set to be home to Australia’s first community-owned renewable energy retailer and one of its founders will be a key speaker at World Environment Day celebrations in Murwillumbah.

Enova Energy Chief Executive Officer, Steve Harris, will tell the public company’s story at the 2016 World Environment Day Festival, being held by the Caldera Environment Centre, with support from Council, at Knox Park on Sunday 5 June from 10am to 3pm.

Enova conducted a successful community campaign late last year to raise funds for the venture and has begun a test of its retail systems and other processes, as its gets closer to taking on its first customers.

Mr Harris, a 40-year veteran of the energy industry, will speak at the festival about setting up a community-owned renewable energy retailer in the Northern Rivers and its goal to foster renewable energy in the region.

“We want to support the development of local renewable energy and we will work with new initiatives to make this happen,” he said.

“Enova is preparing a call for expressions of interest from the community and other organisations to build local renewable generation facilities.”

World Environment Day Festival organiser Ari Ehrlich said it was exciting to have Enova’s CEO speaking at this year’s event, with the pioneering energy retailer so close to starting full operations.

“Enova’s establishment here and its goal to supply all its customers with energy generated entirely by renewable sources further entrenches this region as an epicentre of renewable energy,” Mr Ehrlich said.

“The Northern Rivers has one of Australia’s highest uptakes of home solar power systems, with more than 5000 Tweed households preparing for the end of the 60-cent solar feed-in tariff at the end of the year. And we’re home to the Tyalgum Energy Project to take Tyalgum off the grid.

“Steve is a great inclusion on a list of wonderful speakers who will keep Tweed residents up to date with some of the most exciting green energy initiatives in the country, happening right here.”

The festival speakers, stalls and workshops will provide lots of ideas on how people can make their households and lives more sustainable, lower their energy costs and give the environment a helping hand along the way.

Council will conduct a series of hands-on workshops at the festival, giving people a chance to roll up their sleeves and get practical experience in ways they can live more sustainably.

The annual celebration will also feature a number of entertainers, including Gabriel and Cecilia, the Andrea Kirwin Band and The Pitts Family Circus.

Electric car and bicycle demonstrations will be on display alongside environmental and sustainable business stalls, a composting demonstration, kids activities and food stalls.

Details about the festival are available at calderaenvironmentcentre.org. For more information about Enova email [email protected]

Council construction crews will start work this week to increase the radius of the curve on Clothiers Creek Road, Clothiers Creek, at the corner of Condor Place. This will make the turn less sharp and reduce the risk of cars leaving the road.

The $242,000 project is being funded under the Australian Government Black Spot Program and is designed to reduce the incidence of crashes on this stretch of road.

Over the past five years, seven crashes have been recorded on this corner, including one fatality and four injury crashes.

Works are expected to take about four weeks to complete. All traffic lanes will remain open under the direction of stop / slow flagmen. The speed limit through the work site will be reduced to 40km/h.

Motorists should expect minor delays. This is the final of the four federally funded Black Spot Program

improvements, with two now completed and the work on Terranora Road and Fraser Drive being finalised in the near future.
