We hope and trust that everyone arrived home safely with all of your belongings plus a few additional items such as ribbons, prizes, raffle baskets, bling from Ways and Means, a pink grooming table, and/or the cart that the Newsletter Team was really hoping to win in the raffle (and didn’t).
Did you know that cell phones and their chargers are some of the more frequently forgotten items at hotels? We hope that whatever was forgotten at the 2021 National Specialty is quickly recovered, easily replaced, not very important, and/or should just stay forgotten.
The Newsletter Team hopes you have enjoyed our efforts and expresses so much gratitude to all who helped us with The Ascent. In addition, we want to use this opportunity to speak for many in thanking Alice Clark and the rest of the 2021 National Specialty Show Committee for putting on an event so many needed during these trying times. Thank you and congratulations on a job well done.
And now we turn our attention to 2022. Please consider sponsoring a trophy and checking out the Ways and Means for next year’s National Specialty. Most importantly -- Please stay safe and well so that we can see you in Virginia next year. The Newsletter Team is now officially over and out.

Best of Breed
The reality that the Best of Breed class required complicated schedules, high powered ring stewards and involved a lunch break speaks to the number of quality dogs and bitches that made the trek to Berner Basecamp in Estes Park.
Assisted by her capable ring crew, Judge Mary Alice Eschweiler thoughtfully worked her way through group after group of beautiful Berners. Her pick for Best of Breed at the 2021 BMDCA National Specialty was GCH CH SEVENS FOR ALL THE MARBLES - RIKER - who was beautifully handled by Stacy Slade. Best of Opposite was the Top Twenty Winner GCHS CH THALASSA’S TEA BISCUIT V BIGROCK RN - DOLLY.
Congratulations to all of the teams who made the Best of Breed ring a fitting Grand Finale at the end of such a wonderful week. Here are the complete results:

Best Junior
Reserve Best Junior
The 2021 National Specialty was quite an adventure for Junior Whitney Jameson. She rode out from Iowa in a Tesla piloted by Kathy Berge with two Berners and all of their assorted stuff – Team Tesla definitely deserves a ribbon for that feat of packing/packed in. Whitney, a high school Junior as well as a dog show junior, spent the week both keeping track of Kathy and competing with her Berner, Dublin. They were oh-so-close to passing in one of the snowy draft tests, and they did qualify in obedience. Whitney also showed Dublin in Juniors and was awarded Reserve Best Junior. Whitney shared that she had a lot of fun at the Specialty and looks forward to next year! Congratulations to Whitney on an amazingly successful week.
TRIATHLETERuth Nielsen reports a record number of 27 Triathlete Awards were earned
this year. First time Specialty attendee Novice A winner Maggie Dalzell
earned the award with both her dogs (father & daughter). Tara Jennings
and Pippin, also first time attendees, earned the award. Buck Sykes’ girl Anja was the youngest Triathlete at 9 months old in Gettysburg and now earned the award again at almost 11
years old! Congratulations to ALL of those who earned the 2021 Triathlete Awards.
Our 2021 National Specialty Obedience First Timer, Ruthie, is also a first time Triathlete.

A very special thanks toRuth Nielsen from The Ascent
Newsletter TeamWhen I was approached to assist with graphics for our 2021 Newsletter, and
began contemplating how to expand on our Berner Basecamp’s visual theme, Ruth’s
wonderful work immediately came to mind. Who is more prolific at capturing our beloved breed knee-deep in snow, skirting
an alpine tree-line, backed by majestic mountain-scapes and sun-tipped peaks?I couldn’t imagine a more perfect body of work to lead off each issue of The Ascent. Ruth generously opened the floodgates to her entire portfolio, treating us to her
stunning, award-winning imagery each day of the Specialty as part of our newsletter
masthead. However, Ruth’s photos are best appreciated when not layered with logos
and type, so we thought we’d re-share one of our favorites “in the buff”! This particular
shot is rumored to be the inspiration for the Berner Basecamp logo, and was also
the BEST IN SHOW photo winner from the 2017 National Specialty. Of course it was! Our sincerest thanks Ruth. You made us all
look good this year.

Ms. Dog Show Manners reminds everyone that handwritten thank you notes have not gone out of style! While certainly sponsors of trophies/awards donate without strings attached, it is wonderful to pen a note and let that sponsor know that their generosity is appreciated. The name and address of the sponsor is on the award tag -- all you need is a cute note card and a stamp! Easy peasy.
