Day One of theSpecialty is a Wrap!
The BMDCA Board had a successful meeting, all sheep, goats, dogs, and humans survived herding, all tracking articles were located (unfortunately, not always by the tracking dogs), and those lucky enough to pick up their Welcome Bags early also got an amazing Colorado brownie that included copious amounts of caramel but don’t worry -- no cannabis (probably). There was a small incident involving a lost human but we think that has been resolved. A very successful first day!
The mystery of why there are no trash cans all over has been solved. Yogi Bear and his friends think trash cans are food caches and so while we love bears and think they should eat, we agree that needing to walk to the giant green dumpsters to deposit trash is a small price to pay for avoiding a bear encounter. Please be sure to secure the dumpster doors to avoid inadvertently trapping Yogi inside the dumpster.
Day Two is shaping up to be an interesting one. The snow has started to fall and while this makes for lovely dog photos, the first draft test might be an adventure. I think we are, however, assured that no dogs will have heat stroke today -- that is certainly good news.
The agility trial is off-site. Lori Kennedy is leading a caravan of exhibitors down to the trial and they are no doubt all singing “...over the hills and through the woods to the agility trial we go”... and hoping their Lucky Socks will not only provide great agility runs but will also keep the roads open so they can get back to Estes Park later today.
The Breeder Symposium is tonight, Berner U gets underway, and so on -- check the schedule for all the fun and don’t forget to stay hydrated and dress in layers (LOTS of layers).

HERDING
reportHERDING
Two Herding Trials were held on Sunday, and the exhibitors were relieved that the storm waited until they were done. We’ll have complete Herding results in ourTuesday edition of the Ascent.
Our Herding First Timer, Lisa Fairleigh, reported that Molly had a wonderful time doing the Herding Instinct Test - that’s Molly above in hot pursuit - but she preferred mom to sheep and goats and so did not pass. Next time, Miss Molly!
Herding photos by Annie McDannold.Annie’s entire gallery of Sunday’s Herding
shots are coming to her website soon.
TRACKINGThe 2021 National Specialty Tracking Test was held at Boyd Lake State Park. The test included 2 TDs and 4 TDXs. Field conditions were quite good and the weather cooperated. Thanks to Chair Jane Marino and the rest of the volunteers who worked hard to make the test a success. The only dog to pass his track was CH CT Backcountry Excelsior TKA DD BDD who was beautifully handled by Phil Atkinson. Congratulations to Team Kelyn!
Warmly Yours, Ms. Dog Show Manners
Dear Rule Follower,
That poor, unfortunate person – risking illness, reputation, and removal from the National Specialty simply for being an imperfect human and forgetting their mask.
Oh Dear.
We have an obligation to help that person and so let’s agree on some kind of good intentions signal for “OOPS – your droplets are showing!”
“What should I do if I see someone without a mask or wearing a mask as a chin diaper? Am I required to be the Mask Police?” Signed, Rule Follower
How about making eye contact with a smile and offering a subtle tug on your own properly worn, two-layer mask?
Ms. Dog Show Manners knows what you are thinking – “how can I smile with a mask?! “
Dear Readers – now we truly understand the benefit of lines around our eyes! Those well-worn smile lines will tell the Forgetful, Unmasked Person of our kind intentions in offering our gentle reminder.
Dawn Gabig is the Official Specialty Photographer and her booth is on the floor near the main conformation ring. Dawn can add the judge into your show photo for $5 and so please just head over at the end of your dog’s class. Doing this will help avoid creating lines and crowds (think Covid!), and also saves you from having to wait and/or do any additional grooming of your dog.
Dawn will also be doing portraits throughout the day -- no appointment needed -- and so stop in and capture that beautiful dog in a photo memory.

IMPORTANT CHANGE to Specialty
Veterinary Services Information!
L. Bouaoun
The info about Specialty Veterinary Services changed as soon as we sent the Welcome Bag Edition of the newsletter off to be printed (of course it did!). We recommend you avoid having a veterinary emergency but if it happens, stay calm and get help. We have a local clinic available for business hours emergencies and two options for after-hours emergencies. The updated info below is also printed on the back of your name tag -- how handy is that?!

There is only one pet store in Estes Park, but it’s a good one, and less than 1 mile from the Ridgeline Hotel – a 3 minute drive or 15 minute walk. They carry dry kibble, canned food, raw food, and much, much more. The best plan is to call ahead and order what you like.
