Welcome to the course. We’re very glad you’re here!

Select the “Discussions” link from the Navbar.

Opening Discussions shows the Discussion List page.

Discussions are organized into Forums and Topics.

Within each Forum are one or more Topics of Discussion, with their specific directions.

(This Topic link is in a closed position).

This closed Topic link shows there are eleven Topics, but in this view they are hidden! You should always keep these links open.

“Click” on the Topic link to open both the Topics and directions for each Topic.

Create a DISCUSSION Thread

Select “Start a New Thread” button to enter a new post in a Discussion Topic.

In the HTML editor, the formatting bar allows you to format your text, add pictures, videos, links and more.

Post, Save Draft, or Cancel a post.

Always include your name in the subject line. Instructions on the Topic may require other naming conventions.

When you’re finished, select the “Post” button. Or, if you want to think about if first, you

can save it by selecting “Save Draft”, then return to make changes and “Post” later.

The (abc √ icon) is a spell-checker.

Zak created his introduction in WORD so he could check the word-count then copied his text into the text field.

He selected the spell-checker within the HTML editor.

After posting,you see:

1. the postings to this Topic

2. The Subjectname who Authored it

3. the Dateand time itwas posted.

4. The selected posthighlighted below.

Grid View

To see only topics with new messages, select Topics with Unread from the Display drop-down list. If you have the Discussions List pane visible you can see topics with unread messages in bold.

When you’re finished in Discussions, select the “Done” button to leave the Discussions area.

But you might want to REPLYto a discussion!

Reply to a DISCUSSION Thread

Select the “Discussions” link from the Navbar.

Select the Topic “Discussion One – Introduction”.

Ellie Murray sees another post she wants to read.

She selects Zak’s subject line, “Zak Johnson - Introduction”to open his post.

READING VIEW

After reading his post Ellie wants to reply to Zak, so she selects the Reply to Thread button.

In READING view, select the “Reply to Thread” button.

After reading his post Ellie wants to reply to Zak, so she selects the “Reply” button.

GRID VIEW

in GRID view select the “Reply” button.

After writing her message she selects “Add original post text”.

Ellie re-wrote the subject heading, but correctly left the “RE’ in the Reply.

Then Ellie selects the Post buttonto post it to the Discussion board.

For this class, never attach a file to a Discussion. Attachments will not be read.

After posting she sees both post Zak’s post and her reply indented.

In Grid view—UNTHREADED, Ellie’s reply is not indented.

It‘s suggested that whether you select the Reading View or Grid View keep them THREADED to easily see replies.

Ellie can see on Zak’s post that it shows 1 View and 1 Reply.

The preceding slides showed the Reading View. This slide shows the Grid View.

Replies are always indented from theoriginal post.

Backing out to the Topics page, the subject lines shows the individual messages (In Grid view).

Mark, Flag, or print post by selecting from the arrow dropdown menu next to the post.

Sort by:You can choose to sort Discussion post using several different options.

There are two views which you can choose in Discussions.

This is the “Grid” view. The other is the “Reading” view

You can navigate in Discussions using the side panel.

In the “Reading” view, the side panel becomes an embedded part of the page and stays open—depending on your settings.

You can also ‘Pin’ or ‘Hide’ this list.

All through Falcon Online you’ll see “Fly-out” menus. Select this tabbed arrow to see the Discussions fly-out menu.
