“I look forward to working with Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Grin-ston,” Esper said. “The Army is in the midst of a renaissance, and he is a great choice to carry on our readiness, mod-ernization and reform efforts.”
Grinston currently serves as the senior enlisted leader for U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) -- the U.S. Army’s largest command and pro-vider of expeditionary land forces. He is a combat veteran who has served in every leadership position from team leader to division command sergeant major.

The ballrooms inside the NCO Club were buzzing with activity June 11 dur-ing the Hiring our Heroes Career Summit hosted by Fort Jackson’s Soldier for Life-Transition Assistance Program. Soldiers, veterans, retirees and their Families were invited to attend the day-long event that included preparation seminars and the hir-ing event.
“This an amazing opportunity for our Soldiers and Family members,” said Car-olyn Andrews, SFL-TAP services manag-er and event coordinator. “We have over 60 employers that are here to present em-ployment.”
To qualify to attend the summit, each employer must have a minimum of three positions that are available for immediate
hire. This means that more than 180 posi-tions were available during the summit.
“These kinds of programs are huge in a Soldier, spouse and Family’s life,” said Command Sgt. Maj. John D. Tanchak, U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School. ' -cleus.”

FORT JACKSON WORSHIP SCHEDULE
By SANDRA BARNESEmployee Assistance Program Coordinator
June is Men’s Health Month and this month is dedicated to raising awareness to issues affecting the health and wellness of men. To help dad and men yearlong here are a few things we can do.
Encourage him to get a physical: Most of the factors that contribute to men’s shorter, less healthy lives are preventable. Preven-tion starts with seeing a healthcare provider on a regular basis. Establishing baselines for factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and PSA (a screening test for pros-tate cancer risk) and monitoring how they can change over time will enable the provid-er to catch potentially dangerous conditions
early, when they are still treatable. Encourage him to get physical: The
$ % - %& % %on their own. Rather than simply telling your dad or the men in your life to exercise and hoping that he will, do it with him.
Encourage him to seek behavioral health services: Men continue to suffer in si-lence in accessing behavioral health services. Men are more likely to commit suicide and suffer from depression. Depression and other mental illness can be deadly if left untreated. Untreated mental illness can also make men more vulnerable to substance abuse.
Let him know you care: One reason men disregard their own health is that they are too busy taking care of everyone else. What
they do not realize, however, is that if they die early, they will be hurting the very people they have worked so hard to protect.
Father’s day falls during Men’s Health Month, which serves as a reminder of the im-portance of setting a good example of well-ness and health for your children.
Take good care of yourself, if your kids see you walking, eating healthy, seeking as-sistance with mental and behavioral health issues and going to the gym will teach them to mimic those same behaviors and assist them in living healthier lives.

Butler expressed his pride for his fel-low unit members and had some strong words for anyone planning on taking the cup at next year’s competition.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the Bayonet Brigade. We set the standard,” Butler said. “We have an entire year to project athletes on our gains roster to ensure the cup stays where it belongs, with the Bay-onet Brigade.”
While the annual Victory Week cele-brates the history and pride of the instal-lation, it also fosters comradery among the units through friendly competition.
“We will see what he can bring next year,” Gan said chuckling in response to
Butler’s warning for future cup competi-tors.
Victory Week events started June 1 with a cake cutting ceremony and perfor-mances by the U.S. Army Old Guard’s Fife and Drum Corps and Silent Drill Team at Hilton Field. The evening was capped off with almost 30 minutes of =" sky and could be seen for miles around the installation.
Victory Week came to a close Satur-day with a ball that celebrated not only Fort Jackson’s 102nd birthday but also the Army’s 244th birthday. Soldiers, vet-erans, retirees and their Families dresses in ball gowns and bowties to celebrate the birthdays with dinner, a cocktail hour, entertainment, guest speaker and an evening of dancing.
“I want to thank you for what you do,” Beagle said. “Victory …Starts here.”
Cannons blast early morning June 7 as units across Fort Jackson run through the installations streets during Victory Week. The run helped close out the weeklong event that celebrated Fort Jackson’s 102nd birthday.

As the FORSCOM command sergeant major, Grinston played a key role in the de-velopment of training and preparation of combat units as a globally responsive force as the Army simultaneously builds and sustains readiness to meet the needs of national de-fense. He will succeed Sgt. Maj. of the Army Daniel A. Dailey, who has served in that posi-tion since January 2015.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Grinston is the right leader,” Dailey said. “He possesses all of the character and leadership qualities necessary to lead our NCO Corps into the future, and he will continue to serve the best interests of our Soldiers, their families and the Army.”
The 16th SMA will serve as the Army chief of staff’s personal adviser on matters affect-ing the enlisted force. Much of the sergeant major of the Army’s time is spent traveling throughout the Army to observe training, and talk to Soldiers and their families.
The SMA recommends quality-of-life im-provements to Army leadership and sits on numerous councils that make decisions af-
fecting Army families. The sergeant major of $-gress on these issues. Additionally, Grinston will serve as the public face of the Army’s NCO Corps to the American people, in the media, and through business and community engagements.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve the great Soldiers and Families of the United States Army,” Grin-ston said.
Grinston will be sworn in as the 16th SMA during a ceremony at the Pentagon on Aug. 16.

Adverse weather occurs nationwide, so what can we do to protect ourselves? The an-swer is be prepared for variable weather emer-gency scenarios, have an emergency action plan, stay aware of the situation and condi-tions as they change around you and react (or huddle in place) as necessary.
A number of federal, state and local agen-cies work to monitor meteorological activity and alert you when hazardous weather is on its way. Communities and installations use a number of ways to get weather alerts out such as local radio and television stations and weather radios. Alerting agencies can also send voice and digital messages to computers, smartphones and other devices.
When receiving alerts, it’s important to know the difference between a watch and warning. When a watch associated with a
weather phenomenon such as a severe thun-derstorm is issued, it means severe thunder-storm development is possible for the area described in the alert. People in the alert area should be on heightened readiness in the event a warning follows. A severe thunderstorm warning indicates severe thunderstorm activ-ity is already occurring in the area. It is im-portant that people take precautions to protect against extreme low visibility due to heavy rain, dangerous lightning strikes, large hail, damaging straight-line wind and high-velocity debris.
When weather observers determine an area is subject to potential tornado development, they issue a tornado watch. During a tornado watch, it is necessary to assume a heightened state of awareness of the situation, monitor weather updates and be prepared to respond to deteriorating conditions should a tornado warning be issued. A tornado warning means tornado activity has been sighted in the area.
 9 9 9 = particular area indicates the conditions are fa-% $9 $ heavily in an area for several hours or steadily % & 9 9= $ = 9 & situation and be prepared to react logically in % = 9= 9 =* 9 & = may be accompanied by an order to evacuate.
Storm systems may be observed mak-ing their way across vast areas or states and may be relatively unchanging and give plenty of warning of their arrival. In other circum-stances, they may develop rapidly with little or no warning. It is important to understand the general characteristics of storm systems and develop an action plan for both work and home so everyone knows what to do before the dangerous weather arrives. Here are some
tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe during adverse weather:
Severe ThunderstormsWhen a severe thunderstorm watch is is-
sued, begin monitoring the situation via what-ever media is available. Keep in mind that if you are monitoring television provided by sat-ellite, your service may be interrupted when heavy clouds and rain arrive. A battery-pow-ered radio is preferred because it will continue to broadcast updates even if electricity fails. A weather radio with good batteries is the best choice. If you’re at work or home, begin to re-view your action plan. If traveling by vehicle, consider stopping at a rest stop or town that has public facilities for shelter and wait until the storm has passed. Remember that stopping under an overpass isn’t the safest option.

“Humans are most vulnerable when they

The drill included a smoke simulator, the { exercising their life-saving skills for 360 evaluations, hose operations, and multi-story structure response with ladders and stair-wells.
