Tips to Avoid the School-Time Rush

The carefree days of summer have come to a close. While some

parents are jumping for joy, others view this time of year as hectic

and stressful.

Look back at the previous years. Do you run around like crazy,

maybe even starting work late? Or do you find that your stress

level is elevated because of searching for lost keys and soccer

gear? Then, now is the time to pave the way to a great year by

setting up an organized routine and an organized household for

you and your kids

The key is to have everyone in the household involved

in the daily tasks. Encourage independence. Let your

children help in whatever age-appropriate tasks they

can. The more kids are involved in the household, the

less strain there is on you.

Here are tips for reducing your anxiety level and

making the school days run smoothly.

Ensure Each Child Has a Task List

The list should include all of the activities that need to be accomplished in order to be

ready for a great day at school. The list helps you provide structure without having to

nag your child. Feel free to customize each child’s list by adding or deleting tasks as

appropriate.

Empty backpack Each child should empty their own backpack into a simple system.

Consider using a plastic vertical file that hangs on a wall next to your backpack storage.

Designate a specific spot for each child as well as a “Right Now” spot. The “Right Now”

spot is for any paperwork or homework that would require immediate attention (notes

from the teacher, items for the parents to sign, permission slips, etc.) This provides you

some guarantee that notes and papers get to you in a timely manner. Parents remember

to review the files daily!

Put backpack away

There should be a designated spot in your home for backpacks. This could be a hallway

bench, hooks in a garage, shelves in a laundry room or any location close to where the

children will be exiting the house. By placing the backpack near the door before

bedtime, you eliminate the mad rush backpack search in the morning.

Page 10: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

Have a designated study area

Just where and when a child should do their homework

depends on the child, but again, it should be a part of the

routine. Make sure that each child has a designated study

area – not at the kitchen table or the computer desk (when

possible). Ensure that they can spread out their materials

and preferably it should be away from the T.V. and radio.

While some students work well at a kitchen table around

noise, most require quiet, low-traffic areas to study. You may

need to try a few different areas before you find the one that

works best for your child.

Do homework & put in backpack

This may seem obvious, but often, kids notify their parents

about assignments as they are being tucked in for bed. By

including it on the assignment chart, it is harder to overlook. Each child should have a

designated study time. It does not matter if you are an adolescent or an adult, you

benefit from a routine.

Make lunch

Even if your child is too young to make his/her lunch by themselves, they should be able

to help pack fruit, beverage, dessert or chips. By making lunches the previous evening

you will have one less thing to do on the morning.

Choose clothes

Teach your child to listen to the weather forecast for the next day so that they can pick

out appropriate clothing. Make a rule that they must stick with their clothing choice the

next morning – no stalling because they did not feel like wearing what they chose the

night before.

Pack for extracurricular activities

This might include sports equipment, band instruments, or field trip extras.

Closing

Avoid power struggles by letting children make small decisions. Encourage

independence. The more kids are involved in the household, the less strain there is on

the entire family.

What do you do to set your kids up for success? Share your ideas here!

Here are a few potential funding sources that mightnot have been on your radar. Try Co-Op ProgramsThe Directory of CollegeCooperative Education Programs lists 450 schools with co-op programs. The Back to School Workout Guide

Ok, the kids are back in school and it is time foryou to allow some time for yourself. You’vespent the summer taking care of everyone elseand now it’s your turn. I’d like to give you a fewtips on what not to do, if starting a new weighttraining program or continuing with an oldprogram. The main thing is performing theexercises correctly. It’s easy to get it wrongwithout the proper instruction. Avoiding theseexercise errors will help you achieve your goals

and reduce your risk of injury.

1. SPEEDING THROUGH YOUR WORKOUT.Strength exercises are a lot easier when you go fast because momentumis doing a lot of the work. To get the most out of each lift, aim for an evenlevel of force throughout the movement. Think slow and controlled. Thestandard 2-3 second lift and 3-4 seconds release works well for mostpeople. Recommended rest between sets varies with the training goal andworkload: 30-90 seconds for general fitness, 2-5 minutes for muscularstrength and power. With adequate recovery time between sets, you willreplenish the muscle energy stores to give your best effort.

2. DOING TRADITIONAL SIT-UPS FOR YOUR MID-SECTION.I know you have seen many fitness enthusiasts drop down and crank outhundreds of sit-ups in a single workout. Unfortunately, they are settingthem selves up for injury. This type of exercise can put stress on yourdiscs. Let’s go with exercises that require your spine to stabilize themovement. Such as side planks, forward curls and bird-dogs, for morebalanced workouts.

Page 15: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

3. NOT MOVING THROUGH A COMPLETE RANGE OF THE MOTION.Attempting to lift a weight that is too heavy can reduce the range of motionof the exercise. For optimal strength gains, use a weight that you canmove through a complete range of motion withslight pause at the end of the positive andnegative phase of the exercise.

4.DOING THE SAME OLDWORKOUT OVER, ANDOVER AGAIN.If you have not changed upyour fitness routine inmonths or years, its time!Challenging your muscleswith progressive loads isessential for building abetter body. It‘s very easyto get comfortable with your favorite workout.

However, your workout should not be comfortable if you want to improveyour strength and endurance. It should be work and a little uncomfortable. Finally, you can’t get in shape in one day but you can work hard in one day.

10 Steps to Getting and Staying Fit and Fabulous!

1. Focus on long term success, not short term goals.2. Don’t enter into programs that focus on quick results.3. The key to fitness success is not found in a pill. Working hard and

consistent good habits will give you the results.4. Two hundred crunches will not do much to get rid of body fat around your

mid section. Burn it off!5. Intensity, not duration will provide the best results in weight training and

cardiovascular workouts.6. Nutrition is a big part of your road to success. You have to find what works

for you and your lifestyle.7. If your goal is to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you

consume over a period of time. Stick to total body workouts to burn asmany calories as you can.

8. Be very conscious of how many calories you take in at every meal. Overeating can derail any good workout program.

9. Make sure that the way you train and eat, supports your goals. Whether togain or lose weight, you need the correct program.

10. If you’re not getting the results you want with your workout, hire a trainer.A good trainer will ask you to do things that you will not do on your own orcan’t do on your own.

Back to School Vision Care

Well, it’s that time again, summer is over and the kids aregearing up to go to school! Back to school can mean a varietyof things, from teachers preparing for the new school year, tochildren starting school for the first time, to children anxious toreturn to school, to catch up with friends they missed over thesummer. There are a few things that you can do to prepareyour eyes for the new school year.

First of all you want to makesure your first timers

(kindergarteners) have their eyes checked before theystart school. Make sure any previously undiagnosedvisual problems are addressed before school starts.A couple of common issues are problems withdistance vision and reading vision. Addressingthese issues prior to school will ensure your childhas every advantage before the school year begins.Poor vision can be a possible cause for a poorperformance in school. Now, for your returningstudents, back to school eye exams are a necessity.

Children will sometimes experience a growth spurtduring the summer which can dramatically changetheir vision. This means old glasses may not adequatelycorrect their current visual needs and children thatmay not have needed glasses previously, may nowneed them. Children up to the age of 18 should have aneye exam every yearbecause their visualneeds change so rapidly.

Back to school, affects adults as well. All of the teachers who spent the summerrelaxing, will now be back to a heavy workload and their visual needs will be different.Computer work, reading, grading papers and preparing lesson plans all may put a strain

Page 18: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

on your eyes, so it is just as important for adults returningto school to get a new eye exam as it is for children.

Don’t let back to school eye care make you anxious.By simply incorporating yearly eye exams for children andadults into your routine health care, you can make surethat your family is prepared every school year.

10 Biggest MistakesMost Small Business Owners Make

For those of you entering the business world or maybe it’s your major in school.Take notes and learn all you can in business school; not the school of hardknocks! Our finance expert, Ellen Springer gives you the real deal for the realworld! This 2 part series will certainly get you on the right road. Embrace 1-5NOW!

1. Using Credit Cards to Finance Cash Flowa. Short Term Financing for Long-Term Purchasesb. High Interest Rates

c. Easy to Getd. Easy to miss payments and can cause increase in interest rates upwards of 30%e. Easy to purchase today and worry about paying tomorrowf. Monthly payments add up and can strap a business’ cash flowg. Need to use only in emergency situations and not on a regular basis.

2. Using Debit Cards to Finance Cash Flowa. Comes out of your account within 24-72 hoursb. Check online and sometimes it is out of available balance and

sometimes instead of maintaining a checkbook balance, easy tomake mistakes in timing and bounce checks and incur fees

c. If you have account number on file with vendors, may not knowwhen dollars will come out of your account, so difficult tomanage cash flow

d. If the business has Accounts Receivable, you don’t know whenyou will collect on them, so you are financing the receivableswhen you pay for everything up front instead of using credit likeyour customers are using with you

e. If you have to purchase items for customers that are buying fromyou on credit, you are financing the customer instead of using your own credit.

f. This will slow the growth of the business because you are using cash earlier than youshould instead of using “good” credit options.

3. Using Family and Friends as Employeesa. Hard to fireb. Don’t always have skills neededc. Feelings get hurt easier

Page 20: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

d. Bring prior baggage with you with theme. If there are issues with them, with the company, other employees or with customers, it

complicates basic business decisions; and delays the ultimate growth and success of thebusiness until these are resolved.

4. No Accounting Systema. Difficult to manage without informationb. You must have good information to

make good decisionsc. Don’t know what the actual income or

loss to determine taxes until after theyear is over and it may be too late tomake changes to reduce the taxes.

d. Spend more time later trying to “cleanup” the accounting system and it is toolate to use information to manage, canonly put on a tax return.

e. If the accounting system is kept up, it can be modified along the way and save you moneyf. Most people don’t keep up with their accounting system because they don’t understand

how to do it, when most programs are relatively easy to use and the business owner doesnot have to know debits and credits. Taking a few hours to set up and learn the systemcan save many hours later and costly mistakes for not having timely information.

g. Takes time to learn something new and they would rather focus on what they enjoy doinginstead, so this doesn’t get done

h. They don’t put value on it, and don’t allocate dollars to have someone else do for them as itis not directly income producing as a sale is

i. In reality, a good accounting system, can save a business owner money and allow them tobe more responsive to the market place.

5. Not Enough Technologya. Spend too much time doing simple things that could be automated,

letters, follow up emails, to dos, calendarb. Networks in office instead of everyone saving files on their own

computersc. No backups, in case hard drives go downd. Old technology is slow and time is wasted waiting on the computer.

Fabulous Fall Hair

Embrace the Season,Embrace Your Mane!

As great as summer can be,I always embrace the seasonchanging. Hot humid daysare replaced by a coolbreeze and crisp night air. Itis the season of change.

Remember as a kid going shopping for new schoolclothes, the nervous excitement of a new school year, andthe back to school hair cut? It was like having a chance tostart over and getting ready for the new seasons coming. It was all about movingforward and yes, change.

Fall is a great time toreinvent your look. You do it with yourwardrobe, why not your hair? End of summerhair has a tendency to be long, out of shapeand the color has been worked over by sunand fun. Here are a couple questions to helpyou determine whether it’s time for a new look.Answer them honestly and you’ll know if it

applies to you.

Do you wear your hair in a ponytail moreoften than not?

Are you finding you have to overcompensate or change your make-up inorder to feel like you look good?

Do you find it hard to determine if thepicture you’re looking at was from 5 years ago or last summer because your hairlooks the same?

When you go to the salon is it just about maintenance? Do you consult with yourstylist/colorist, or has it just become routine?

Page 22: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

It’s difficult to see ourselves from the outside, as others do. That’s why it’simportant to find a good stylist/colorist that you can trust. You should beconsulting with them every few visits. Is this color still working? Is this styledated? What are my options? They should help keep you current and lookingyour best.

Look through current magazines, cut outpictures of color and styles you like, and letyour stylist/colorist guide you through whatwill work and what’s possible. As a colorist, Ilove when clients bring in pictures. Darkchocolate brown to her may actually be amedium golden brown. It gives me insight as tohow they see color. Good hair color shouldenhance your skin tone and eye color, justas a great cut should work with your facialshape and features.

If you’ve been thinking aboutchanging your color orhairstyle and are finding itdifficult to communicateor achieve what it is youwant, it may be time toconsider a salon change.

Changing hairdresserscan be a scary prospect. When consideringchanging salons orhairdressers, get recommendations from friends, colleagues or the teller at thebank whose hair you’ve always admired.Take the recommendations and call the salon to see if you need to make anappointment for a consultation. Often times you can just stop by for a consult.Consultations should be free!

A colorist or stylist should spend time to consult with you. Do not feel rushed intomaking a decision. If you like what they say, make an appointment for thefollowing week. They should consult again with you when you come if for yourappointment. If they are saying something different than previous discussed, youfeel uncomfortable or there seems to be a disconnect in communication, GETOUT OF THE CHAIR! Do not feel obligated to have a service done just becauseyou made an appointment.

It’s a special relationship you develop with the person doing your hair. Theirexpertise, skill and advice are what you are paying for. Your trust and confidence

in them is something they earn. Put it all together and beautiful things arepossible!

Refresh, Restore, Renew-Your Sundried Skin

As school begins, vacation time and summer come to an end. Itis now time to focus on rejuvenating our skin from that summerblast of the heat and sun. The sun and heat has pulled themoisture from the skin leaving it dry and dehydrated. Refresh, restore and rejuvenate your skin with a great exfoliationperformed by a professional skincare therapist who can giveyour skin a fresh, vibrant, healthy appearance.

A professional skin care therapist can help youreach the goal of restoring your skin from thesummer heat and sun. Let’s look at some optionsthat are available. Exfoliation of the skin is the mostimportant step to revitalizing that parched, dry, dehydrated skin. With the help of a professionalskin therapist they will advise you in different types ofexfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion, hydrodermabrasion, ultrasonic treatments, chemical peels or enzyme peels; that will provide the bestresults in your quest for restoration of the skin.

Day spas and medical spas all perform different types of facials utilizingexfoliation with chemical peels, enzyme peels and different modalities.Modalities are equipment-using electricity such as microdermabrasion, hydrodermabrasion and ultrasonic. All of these are forms of exfoliation withdifferent techniques, providing the recovery of healthy skin. However, there areclients who are unable to use modalities because of medical history. In selectingthe best treatment for your skin, the therapist will perform a skin evaluation todetermine the condition of the skin and then determine the type exfoliationprocedure for the results desired.

Microdermabrasion can be described as a polishing of the skin, by vacuumingfine crystals over the face with special machine. Using a held hand piece thatremoves the dead skin and disposes the dead cells in a disposal canister. Thebenefit of this particular treatment is a deep exfoliation by removing the deadcells and allowing the new cells to reveal themselves leaving the skin refreshed, healthy and ready to receive the nourishment for the skin.

Another treatment that is very beneficial toremoving those unwanted dead skin cells isHydrodermabrasion. This type of exfoliation usessaline water, solution and serums that spray at

high velocity and infusing other ingredients over theface loosing and removing the dead cells. Thetreatment is recommended for individuals with sensitive skin however all skintypes can benefit from this treatment.

Page 25: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

The Ultrasonic is another method that can be used to remove dead cells from theskin using sound waves at a low frequency, cleansing the skin, and productpenetration. The skin care professionals will make the best decision based onwhat the client wants to accomplish with their skin and explain why a particularexfoliant was chosen for the client.

Professional skin care therapists can offer a variety of treatments to help calm, soothe and restore hydration; while adding resilience to the skin. In manyinstances, modalities are unable to be used. Therefore, the use of chemicalpeels including alphadroxy acids such as glycolic, lactic and betahydroxy salicylicacids are used; help to improve the appearance of fine lines, rough texture, wrinkles, clogged pores and improve the cell renewal. Trends for FALL 2011

I LOVE Fall! It conjures up wonderful images and feelings forme. It’s a new beginning: a new school year for many; a newseason of art exhibits; a new cooler weather season; and a newseason of fashion and beauty trends. Fall is a time to take stockof the year coming up and make a great plan—a “Seize the Day”plan with a fearless kind of optimism about all that is POSSIBLE.Fall is a time to reflect on how we want to be perceived by theworld around us.

We all love to feel confident and part of feeling confident in anybusiness or social setting is when you know you are dressed

well—dressed better than you have to be. So as you look at your schedule for the Fall;whether you have a job outside the home every day or if your job is running your homeand going to various school functions, think about what you wear! How terrific is it tooverhear or even have someone tell you directly that you always look great? Yves St.Laurent said “Fashions fade; style is eternal.” Therefore the goal of stylish dressing is tofeel confident about what you are wearing and be light-hearted about it. You may nothave been born with a sense of style, but you can create it.

The big design houses introduced their Fall lines last Spring (for the fashion world). Inour fast-paced world, every other clothing manufacturer in every price range will havetheir own version of the “Hot Fall Trends.” This is a wonderful thing! No matter whatyour budget is, you can look modern and fashionable. Fashion is accessible toeveryone no matter your style, age, shape or size. Emphasize your best parts!

A change in the season is a great time to look in your closet and really look at what’sthere. You may find an item from several years ago that is back in style. Worn adifferent way or with a new accessory, it could be right out of a magazine. But, don’thold on to clothes if they don’t make you look and feelterrific. Give them to a charity and treat yourself tosomething new. And don’t ever let anyone talk you intobuying something you don’t love.

VIVID COLOR: Beautiful jewel tones that really look great oneveryone: Wine, red, royal blue, jade green, royal purple.Big botanicals are terrific in these beautiful colors. Take arisk out of your comfort zone!

Page 27: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

GLAMOUR:The term is “lady like”—think Audrey Hepburn, or Grace Kelly, butwith a modern twist. Wonderful daytime dresses are in style andthe hemline is just below the knee (yea!). Shimmer is big—satinand sequins.

LEATHER:Is always “hot” for Fall. But this year it shows up as sleeves on asweater, or paired with lace.

COLOR BLOCKING:Think plum/grey/navy, or red/black/cream, or royal blue with

emerald green.

FUR:Another staple for Fall. This season it’s on everything from shoes to bags to collars tosleeves. Shearling is also popular. Faux is also a great way to go!

GREY:A fabulous neutral. It’s lovely and cool alone but has a WOW factor when pairedwith those vivid jewel tones!

JEANS: We all need a wardrobe of jeans. High-waisted,flared, skinny, boot cut, washed out, dark and colors (likered or green). They are all great.

ACCESSORIES:Shoes: pumps with chunky heals, booties, boots, balletflatsCoats: beyond function into fashion statementsBags: ladylike handheld, and across the body shoulderbagsJewelry: gold

Stockings: textured

Makeup: face - red lips, strong brows, nails - grey, army green, gold and as always, red!

Style Inspiration Who inspired your style? Think about it. Every one of us has or had a woman in our lives that totally had “it”. You know what I mean. The woman who was always so pulled together, so impeccably groomed, that could walk into a room and make an entrance without even trying. Was it your mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, teacher, a few of them? Men this goes for you too! Style isn’t gender specific. What man in your life made you want to stand taller, had the handkerchief ready, shoes always polished, and was the perfect gentleman? The beauty salons and barber shops of days gone by are reminiscent of a more elegant time. A time when the focus really could be you without all of the distractions we deal with today. I’d like to think that those days are closer than we think. I know they are.

What images helped to shape the person you’ve become. If you’ve lost sight of that, find a way to get it back. I promise that it’s in that place where you’ll find the perfect base for your style platform. Everything comes full circle. Styles in clothing, hair, makeup, etc. have a way of coming around again. Some things we’ve seen a few times. Prepare for your own style transformation. Find ways to incorporate some old images and put a new spin on it…..yours! I love the whole idea of a transformation. There are physical transformations, spiritual transformations and definitely style transformations.

POSSIBLE Beauty

Hi Dolls! It’s Ms. Rae again coming at you with the Possible FallMake-Up Tips for 2011!That’s right, it’s that timeagain for back to school,PTA, soccer practice, pep rallies and holidaysparties. Well I always say

‘Never let them see you sweat!’ and here aresome possible tips to help you do just that.

There are a lot of brands out there to try.Whatever you choose, choose something thatscreams YOU!!! The trick is to pick a few ideasto add on to your own look. You is bdon’t wantto be anything on a naked face, that is a facewithout a good cleanser and moisturizer. Myfavorite is Mary Kay’s Time Wise set, but by allmeans use what works for you.

Tip 1: No more bronzer for your cheeks! 2011 fall is flush fall! Natural glow is a hit thisseason and you don’t have to over do it, a little dab will do. Blush comes in powder, creams, and airbrush. The choice is all yours. But you do want to apply a highlighterlightly on the top of your cheekbones to give you that soft glow look. Where can you findthem? Any and everywhere! However, if you like then I love it doll. This choice is allyours.

Tip 2: Say it with me: LASHES! That’s right doll, lashes are a hit this season. If appliedcorrectly you may not even want let alone need a liner. You could go with the glam lookand work the falsies or work your own with a lash curler. Apply one to two coats startingfrom base to the top, then clamp down for 4 to 5 seconds and repeat all the way up to

the top. You will be surprised; to say the least at whatmama already supplied you with.

Page 34: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

Tip 3: Believe it or not ladies but ol’ smoky eye is still alive and kicking. To achieve thesmoky look you want to apply a thin layer under the bottom lid and blend to the outercorner. Which color??? Think warm.

Tip 4: Lips! Classic red has a few new shades thisseason. The rule of thumb to this is, think wine! With thislook I wouldn’t try it without a liner. Line your lips with aburgundy/wine shade and color in. Then either run ared lipstick or gloss to create a look all in your own.

Now this is perfect for aschool residual night or night

out with the beau. You want to keep the neutral look foryour face. A thin liner, simple shadow, mascara, red

lipstick and viola! Amasterpiece in under threeminutes.

Tips 5: Simple Shadows Season! Try gold, huntergreen, even purple. Lets say you have a tweed suit onthan you would choose burgundy or green and ametallic gold. Apply, blend and you’re done. Don’tforget the finishing touches!

So there you have it Possible Gal! Straight from herhighness’ mouth! Add these looks in with your routine and make it your own! As alwaysbe prime, be prompt and always be POSSIBLE!

All Things Are POSSIBLE

From the House ofAnelda Guest

I have a beautiful and talented sister who isconstantly reminding me that all things arepossible if we only believe. She reassuresme of this as I scurry around trying to fulfillmy commitments as a wife, mother,

grandmother, sister, friend, student, teacher, employee, etc. I’m sure you canrelate. With school back in session and all the added activities andresponsibilities; my personal life goal of being the perfect Proverbs 31 womanseems like a pipe dream. Let’s take a look at that job description:

Proverbs 31: 10-30:

10 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.

11 The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no needof will do him good and not evil all the days of her life.

12 She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands.

14 She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar.

15 She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and aportion to her maidens.

16 She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth avineyard.

17 She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms.

18 She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out bynight.

19 She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff.

20 She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands tothe needy.

Page 36: POSSIBLE, because everything is!

21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household areclothed with scarlet.

22 She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple.

23 Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of theland

24 She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant.25 Her strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come.

26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness.

27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread ofidleness.

28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praisethher.

29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all.

30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD,she shall be praised.

Since we are all works in progress I am not going to give up on this goal. I amalso truly a ‘Girl Raised In The South (GRITS) kind of girl. As such, food is a veryhigh priority. Making a quick meal on a busy night, for unexpected guests, ortaking a hot meal over to a friend in distress is something that brings great joy tome. It even lets me dream that I might have attained at least some qualities ofthat Proverbs 31 woman! I would like to share one of my favorite quick and easyrecipes with you.
