In 2012, the Savassi Festival reached its 10th edi-tion. Since the first edition, it has greatly increased in size and diversified its activities, developing its aesthetic cannon becoming a well-respected and important event in the jazz and instrumental mu-sic scene in Brazil.

This year’s programme had many novelties: Some of the concerts were held at Praça da Liberdade, one of Belo Horizonte`s postal cards, Kenny Wer-ner created an exclusive symphonic piece for the event and performed it alongside his trio and the Symphonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais, in a worl-dwide première. Besides, for the first time, the Savassi Festival sponsored an artistic residence, Darcy James Argue, who honored us with his work alongside the Big Band Palácio das Artes. A fine CD was the final result of an intense and creative work.

Our continuous effort to innovate, has been resul-ted in an edition of unprecedented creative vitality, proposing new projects and bringing surprising attractions.

The numbers of this year’s edition are something to be proud of: nearly 35,000 people attended the festival; 89 concerts were performed; 7 CDs were launched; 9 different DJs sets were presented; 16 workshops, 4 competitions and 2 exhibitions were held.

In addition to an intense exchange in cultural ex-periences from the musicians from different parts of the world, new partnerships were established, the technical structure improved. Moreover, this year the Festival received an intense coverage from the print media, as can be seen in the clip-ping that goes attached to this document.

At the main day of the event, six stages were set at Parque Municipal, Praça da Liberdade and Savas-si. We solicited, as the entrance ticket for the sta-ges of Savassi, two kilograms of non-perishable

food. As a result, we gathered 13.000 kilograms of food, which were donated to the Associação Muni-cipal de Assistência Social - AMAS (Municipal As-sociation of Social Assistance) and to the Israelite Federation of Minas Gerais.

These numbers speak for themselves: Savassi Festival is the biggest jazz festival in Brazil. This is rewarding but nothing compares to the feeling of satisfaction we experience with the intense ex-change with the public. We are sure that the con-tinuous growth and development is only possible due to the collective effort of a group of institu-tions, our partners.

The economic viability of the Festival was as-sured due to the support of Federal, State and Municipal’s Culture Incentive Law, and the private sponsors NET, Budweiser, CEMIG, Thyssenkrup, AeC and Petrobras. The event counted, also, with the institutional support from Unimed-BH and from the Embassy of Israel, the diffusion by Ra-dio Inconfidência, the participation of Fundação Clóvis Salgado and the partnership with BH Sé-rie Instrumental. The Savassi Festival was as well supported by Patio Savassi, O Tempo newspaper, Música no Museu da Pampulha and by the website Clube de Jazz.

Urban and trade regulation institutes also are es-sential for the Festival: we have worked side by side with the Regional Centro-Sul of the City Hall of Belo Horizonte and with BHTrans.

The Savassi Festival evidences the huge potential of art and culture in the public space as a means of citizenship building. Culture is not just a sine qua non condition for the existence of a healthy and vital public space, but also essential for what we call a dignified existence (Bravo!). This do-cument gives a panoramic vision of the Savassi Festival 2012. We invite you to be part of our next edition, in 2013.

SAVASSI FESTIVAL IN NUMBERS

The Savassi Festival is an international festival of instrumental music that takes place in Belo Horizonte.It is composed of a series of activities, being the major one a big outdoor music festival that happens in the streets of the town.

Launched in 2003, the festival grows continualy and develops its aesthetic cannon. From only 1 stage in 2003, it reached 22 in 2012, having received 35.000 people on all of its attractions.

Trial of new groups, regulated by an edict. In 2012, the competition received 140 applications. From those 140 groups, two were chosen - a national and an interna-tional, for presenting a concert at the Festival.

From 16th April to 5th May 2012

Intern trial for students of the Music School of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), regulated by an edict. The festival developed this partnership with UFMG part of the effort to work closely with the different links of the productive chain of the music industry. This competition chose student’s groups to perform at the UFMG’s Conservatory Stage.

A photography contest, regulated by an edict and divided in two categories: camera (digital or analog) and cellphone - this year’s novelty -, the competition aims to select the best pictures taken at the Fes-tival by the audience.

50 pictures were selected from the past contests and shown in a very busy shopping mall in Belo Horizonte.

ARTISTIC RESIDENCENovelty of 2012.

In this year one of the main novelties of the Savassi Festival was the artistic residence of the composer Darcy James Argue, in Belo Horizonte. He performed alongside with the Palácio das Artes Big Band, one of the professional training group of Fundação Clóvis Salgado.

The artistic residence result could be seen firsthand at the 29th of July, in a concert at the Praça da Liberdade. Besides that, a CD, also fruit of the artistic residence, will be released.

Seven CDs were launched in this year’s Savassi Festival. The artists that launched their CDs were: Feli-pe Continentino, Joana Queiroz, Antônio Loureiro, Walmer Carvalho e Dudu Viana, Juninho de Sá, Túlio Araújo e Chico Amaral.

In this night the Jazz of Minas’ Award (Minas stands for our state, Minas Gerais) was awarded and was staged the world première of “Spaces”, composed by Kenny Werner especially for the Savassi Festival of 2012.

The second edition of the Jazz of Minas’ Award, aimed to honor the musicians from Minas Gerais, was dedicated to Chico Amaral, who also had launched, in the first part of the night, his new CD “Província”.

In the secong gig of the night Kenny Werner and his trio performed with the Symphonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais the piece “Spaces”, conducted by Marcelo Ramos.

For the second time, concerts of the Savassi Festival were presented in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Both towns received two big concerts from Shai Maestro Trio (Israel) and Kenny Werner Trio (USA).

The concerts in Rio de Janeiro took place in the traditional music house Miranda. In São Pau-lo, the concerts happened in Jazz nos Fundos and Casa do Núcleo.

SAVASSI FESTIVAL 2013The greatest challenge of the Savassi Festival 2013 is to go on developing itself and enlarging its cultural, educational, social and public’s relevance.

The Festival activities are going to start in January, with the competition Novos Talentos do Jazz (New Talents of Jazz). In each of the following months, many actions will be presented until the top moment of the Festival is reached. The partnership with Fundação Clóvis Salgado and with the Symphonic Orchestra of Minas Gerais. will be renewed and the Festival will enlarge its architectural configuration by adding the Praça Duque de Caxias to its circuit, and also promoting concerts in New York and São Paulo.

In 2013 the communication and marketing activities of the festival will be strengthen.

Altogether, there will be 60 concerts, 9 DJs presentations, 2 competitions, 2 exhibitions and 8 workshops. The 2013s provisional programme includes the following groups: João Bosco, Cliff Korman, Túlio Mourão, Dave Pietro, Moutin Reunion Quartet e José Namem.

Corporate Opportunities

The Savassi Festival is a success of audience and critics in Belo Horizonte. It’s an innovator event that reach-es a huge public. It is also a mature event, with growing media exposition and that was kindly received by the citizens and government. It’s a great investment due to its strategy of occupation of the public space and of communication. The Festival project was submitted to the federal, state and municipal’s Culture Incentive Law.
