Braga has always been an important centre for culture, commerce and religion. With a total urban population of 175,063 inhabitants, Braga is the third-largest city in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto), including the city and suburban parishes; the municipality, which includes 62 parishes, has a population in 2011 of approximately 181,819 inhabitants (the seventh largest municipality in Portugal by population). Its agglomerated urban area extends from the Cavado River to the Easte River. Braga is also the seat of the Greater Metropolitan Area of Minho, which includes a population of 826,833 (2007 statistics), considered one of the fastest growing urban areas in the European Union.In 2012, the city was awarded with the title European Youth Capital 2012.
The popular descriptions of the various regions of Portugal goes something like this, "In Braga they pray, in Coimbra they study, in Porto they work, in Lisboa they govern, and in the Algarve they play."

The Archiepiscopal Court (Paço Arquiepiscopal) or the Old Archbishop's Palace is a set of three different buildings with distinct characteristics and time periods.The Eastern wing (facing the Santa Barbara Garden is of Gothic style and dates to the 14th and 15th centuries.The Western wing (facing the Municipio Square) was built in the 18th century in the Portuguese Northern Baroque style.The South wing, defining the Paço Square, is composed of various buildings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.Presently, the building lodges the Rectorate of the University of Minho, the Public Library and the District Archive

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro (or Sanctuary of Sameiro) is a sanctuary and Marian shrine located in Braga, in the surroundings of the city.Construction was begun on 14 July 1863 on the domed church of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro (Our Lady of Sameiro). The founder of the shrine was the Vicar of Braga, Padre Antonio Martinho Pereira da Silva. The sanctuary is the largest Marian devotional shrine in Portugal, second only to the Sanctuary of Fátima.
