PF&R has a response area of 70 river miles on both the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. As a signatory to the Maritime Fire Safety Association, PF&R has theresponsibility to respond approximately 140 miles from Bonneville Dam to the mouth of the Columbia River.

PF&R's fireboats and rescue boats respond to over 300 emergency aid calls a year from boaters in distress, dive responses, ship and boat fires, debris removal, high water conditions, bridge jumpers, and mutual aid calls. PF&R fireboats and rescue boats respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week in all weather and sea conditions.

The addition of PF&R’s two new 50’ CBRNE Fireboats, in conjunction with the current fleet to include the 87’David Campbell, the 46’ Buss, the 42’ Williams, the 32’ and 35’ rescue boats and two, quick rescue watercraft will allow PF&R to insure that theColumbia and Willamette River waterways are safe and secure.

NEW 50’ FIREBOATS

PF&R’s two new 50’ rescue fireboats have CBRNE capabilities to ensure the safety of our emergency responders in the event of a threat.

CBRNE emergencies increasingly threaten the health and safety of people worldwide. Chemical and biological agents have been used to create fear and cause harm. Explosives are frequently used to injure and kill large numbers of people. Although radiation dispersal devices – commonly called “dirty bombs”— and

nuclear weapons have not been used by terrorists to date, their potential use is a serious concern.

Oregon and Washington must be prepared to respond to disasters and emergencies, whether intentional or accidental, that may occur.

The 50’ Fireboats are an aluminum, high-speed, multi-mission capable, dependable and rugged mobility platform to protect and serve along the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. The 50’ Fireboat is able to respond rapidly to fire and rescue missions, orconduct planned patrols and training. The primary roles of the 50’ Fireboat are:

Fire Response, Search and Rescue Recovery. Dive Team - Recovery of persons from the water. Transfer of persons and equipment from boat to boat. Towing of disabled craft. Firefighting, Medical and Rescue assistance. Oil and Other Spill Response. Hazards to Navigation. Terrorism Response. Preparedness for Natural Disasters. Marine Environmental Protection (MEP). Port Security and Safety (PSS).

FIREBOAT NAMING

The twin Fireboats have been given names from the chinuk wawa in honor of the original people who lived and worked along the rivers that PF&R so proudly serves. The kwansǝm (pronounced KWAN-sum), reflects PF&R’s motto of “Always Ready, Always There.” Her twin vessel, the skukum ats (pronounced SKOO-kum Ots), represents the kwansǝm’s “strong sister.”

In July 2015, the kwansǝm and the skukum ats were given Native American blessings by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.

FIREBOAT SUMMARY

The Fireboats feature a full load displacement of 68,000 lbs, are propelled by twin 1200 bhp MTU Series 2000 M84L diesel engines driving FF450S Kamewa Rolls Royce waterjets, with predicted top speed at full load displacement exceeding 40 knots.

The boats were tailor designed by Tim Von Seggern, a Harbor Pilot and Paramedic for the City of Portland with over 30 years of boat building experience and manufactured by Oregon Iron Works (now Vigor), a local manufacturer.

The 50’ Fireboats are state-of-the-art CBRNE, Firefighting, Rescue Mission Capable boats that will serve the Columbia and Willamette Rivers for 30+ years.
