Just a bite...
Although it’s only a morsel, I hope it’s a savory and evocative one. I’ve worked almost as tirelessly on this portfolio as the designs
that are encapsulated.
Once a novice set designer, musician, and vocalist, the heart and head found its strength in Interior Design (Architecture). Like
theatre, I came for the wonderment. Unlike its temporal cousin, I stayed for the permanence.
Pursuing my Bachelor’s degree has given me a fondness for visceral experiences, developed concepts, and a genuine search for an (im)perfect balance of ideology and reality. Look beyond
for a project that teased out thesis work, various academic designs, and personal explorations.
Nibble, enjoy, digest.

Teasing the Brain:
What does Contemplation Look Like?
SPRING 2016As a side project of my thesis, this is an exploration of what we may contemplate on any given day, from what is visible, microscopic, gargantuan, theorized, or remembered.

The P irates of Penzance
SPRING 2014COLLABORATION WITH COLLEAGUES SUSANNE ORDONEZ, MAGGIE HILL, MELISSA MORAN, AND SARAH MURFF
Tasked with creating a cost efficient set design using a streamlined production method was the first project we took from theoretical to actual. Countless models were tested among our two collaborative groups. Eventually, we chose to soak and bend birch veneer, use consistent spacers, and hang each strand, which ranged from 8 to 18 feet, with standard U-bolts. The strands were balanced with string curtains, creating contrasting movements.
Initial inspiration came from the whimsical, and the comically absurd lyrics of Gilbert and Sullivan. Form was found through the existing topography of Penzance. Natural, pliable birch gave breadth to an aggregate of dynamic, undulating waves.
The aggregate has since been used in many events.

The TalkBack Hotel
SPRING 2015Inspired by the history of a neighborhood, and dismayed by its recent gentrification, the TalkBack Hotel was an effort to reconnect the community with its (not so distant) past.
Function followed the form of creating a storytelling niche for neighbors from near and far. Here, visitors could listen to, support, and connect with neighborhood anchors, makers, and rule-breakers.
At the TalkBack, it’s never too late to come home.

2015-CurrentInspired by the growing trend of people, especially in Oregon, who identify as “spiritual not religious” this project was initially a self-driven exploration. Upon presenting the idea, jurors and colleagues were so intrigued by the notion that I chose to pursue it for my thesis.
While many spiritual or contemplative moments occur in nature, the purpose of this design was to create a similar experience in a downtown cluster that supports our busy, urban routines. It is at once a support network, art installation, sanctuary, and bathhouse. Still in progress, the design has been proposed at the Union Way building in downtown Portland, Oregon.

personal explorations:
Paper Love
SEPTEMBER 2016 - CURRENTIt began simply as a challenge to draw a card a day. Intended to share with others, initial inspiration came from recreating and reimagining popular children’s book quotes and illustrations. The cards have grown more elaborate, often using 6 or more pieces, embroidery, and a mix of hand and mouse.

personal explorations:
SEPTEMBER 2015Getting a taste in project management and design, this wedding was centered around a DIY budget and relying on a community of design students. Personal work included planning and managing the event, which involved handcrafting all paper announcements, and designing both large and small details of the event venues. The experience was unmatched with a staggering amount of design dedication. A humbling collaboration, it gave me a taste of how to find the balance of ideal expectation and realistic outcomes, while maintaining a brisk timeframe.*
*no friendships were harmed in the process.

#Paris Stands Strong
NOVEMBER 2015Moved by the Paris Attacks in 2015, it was imperative to contribute my support and solidarity. I chose to create the silhouette of the Paris skyline with the photos of those we lost. Although primitive in nature for my skills at the time, I valued the ability to show my support to the international community in a creative manner.
Unfortunately, it was never finished for the publishing of people’s photos or names ceased after two weeks had passed. Nevertheless, a spot remains for each person.
