    _Health Center Delicias (Madrid_Spain)

  • The Health Center is located in the neighborhood of Delicias in the southern Madrid, Spain. The aim of the project is to solve a communication problem that exists in between the neighborhoods of Delicias and Atocha, which is separated by a railway and a closed and abandoned park. The main idea that guided the development of the project was to join important city sites around the park with union stripes that then evolved into a tridimensional communication knot. Each part of the stripe segment is dedicated to a different medical department. The vertical communi-cation cores are located in the intersections of the stripes.Location Plan

_Event Center (Santiago de Chile) (Parametric Design)

  • After deciding a series of rules in relation with the sine function, different curves of different size and height can be joined to one another, creating a structure that inspires change and movement, two features necessary in an event center. The surface resulted is immediately identi-fied to serve as a cover or roof top of the building.

Having as a starting point that the project is going to be developed from the premises of parametric design, a natural event is analyzed: the defor-mation that the impact of an insect produces in a spider web.

When the decision of developing an event center is made, a site in the city of Santiago de Chile has to be chosen: The Business Center of Huechuraba (North-west of the city). This neighbor-hood is being constructed at the time, there is plenty of free space and a lot of new companies are establishing their office.

The event center needs plenty of open space that can be divided into smaller places and therefore are constantly changing, and other permanent spaces for common uses, such as offices, bathrooms, cafe and storage rooms.

The different sine curves are directly related to the height of the space beneath them and to the length of the curve, which will determine the distance between pillars. As a conse-quence, there will be different areas beneath the common space to choose from when doing whichever activities.

The structure is made from a series of laminated wood arches, on top of which, rests the cover made of stoneware ceramic plate. The arches rest on the ground through a steel support. The faade is made out of glass, in order to keep a relation with the exterior.

The abandoned garden is private (even though the monastery is still habited), and is closed to the public access.

The building site has a complicated shape, since its the space in between buildings that follow a medieval urban arrange-ment.

The site is very precious since it is near the limit of the city framed by the Castle of Segovia, it has an entrance from two of the most important streets and it faces the historic wall, and therefore enjoys amazing views of the segovian landscape.

Another difficulty, apart from its shape, is that the two accesses from the two main streets, are at different heights, and therefore, the public circulation through the project, and the connection between the streets, are extremely important.

In an abandoned garden of a nun monastery, a project of low cost housing is proposed.

The location is in the historic hart of the city of Segovia, Spain. This walled city has a large historic importance, with influences from the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and the Middle Ages, mixed with the local style.

The different apartments have access through connection volumes, which are recessed from the main faade outline.

The apartments are divided into two levels, separating, the more public parts (living room, kitchen) from the most private (bedrooms).

As a result the entrance to each apart-ment is made through an intermediate level. Since they are low cost apart-ments, the space is used in a very tight and precise manner.

The main structure is made of concrete.

The roof has a slight inclination to relate to the surrounding buildings.

The faade is made has an interior brick wall and an exterior layer of a ceramic stone with an intermediate ventilation layer.

The ceramic stone is also used to relate to the traditional architec-ture of Segovia. However since it is used a ventilated faade system, it allows to have a more bioclimatic behavior against the harsh changes of temperature of Segovia.

The connection volumes (that contain the vertical circulation) are made of a glass wall, with an exterior layer of wooden slats. This allows a feeling of transition in the experience of entering or leaving the apartment, making possible a relation between the outside and the inside.
