Introduction

This portfolio was prepared under the program “Comenius EYE - Enterprising Young

Europeans”. The Comenius program aims to improve the quality of school education and

strengthen the European dimension, particularly by encouraging transnational

cooperation between schools and helping to improve the career development of

employees who are directly involved in school education, as and the promotion of

language learning and cross-cultural awareness.

The purpose of this program was to give our students the opportunity to learn how

to operate at European level with their peers, young Europeans from Lithuania,

Germany, Denmark and Finland. In the European Union, the creation of European

business relationships is paramount to future development and integration of Member

States. Through the program, it was possible for students aged 14-17 to work together

to develop their own business idea and work with other students of European Union

countries. That way they exchanged views, learnt new attitudes and different cultures.

The project aimed at each school to create a virtual company and this company

product / service was presented at an international exposition in Germany. Product came

from the "minds" of students involved in the project with reference to environmental

awareness and cultural appreciation. These are important aspects for the production of

the product. Students presented their products to foreign countries by incorporating local

culture into them offering a piece on European diversity. During the program students

visited companies to get help in the development of enterprises and their products.

This portfolio was written by the students of the program. Through this project

students learnt about all aspects of entrepreneurship and had the opportunity to work in

an international European environment.

Chapter 1: Company creation and Design

Chapter 1.1.: How do I start a company?

The idea / innovation is the main target for a modern business, the business process

starts with the identification and evaluation of an idea, the business idea which leads to

the development of one or more products or services.

The decision of an individual to undertake a business activity arises from the

observation of the lack of a product on the market.

Creative techniques based on creativity and imagination (eg brainstorming) and

analytical techniques based on analytical skills of the individual (eg study conditions of

purchase) are commonly used for capturing business concepts.

The company is a basic economic unit because it produces goods and services with

the help of inputs (capital, labor etc).

The businesses categorized according to the following criteria:

1. The ownership. According to this:

a) public enterprises, whose owner is the state,

b) private, the owner of which is private and

c) joint ventures in which a proportion of state-owned and the rest to

individuals.

2. Their legal status, according to this they are divided into individual and

corporate enterprises.

3. The main field of activity:

a) primary production sector

b) secondary production sector or manufacturing companies and

c) tertiary production sector, where are all the companies that provide services

(banking, healthcare, insurance, etc.).

4. The scope of their activities, so distinguished national companies which operate in

the country of their residence, and multinational companies which expand their

operations in other countries.

5. The size when divided into:

a) small, employing fewer than 50 people

b) medium, employing 50 people up to 249 and

c) major, employing more than 250 people.

Chapter 1.2.: Design – (creation, innovation etc) Having decided about the business idea, the product or service and the type of

business, it is necessary for someone to follow the steps below in order to set up a

company:

Step 1: Design and creation of businessForm of business

If the original idea for the business exists, company management and business

departments should be designed.

Management of the company

The company's management is the most important part of the business. It is

essential for having an effective and functional decision-making process in order to

accomplish the proper operation and viability of the company.

Management is a set of activities that focus on company's resources (human,

financial, material and information) in order to achieve organizational goals in an

efficient and effective manner. These activities include goal setting and planning,

communication, organization, management, control and supervision.

Also include managing and motivating people, effective negotiation with buyers,

suppliers and sponsors, identification, prevention and problem solving, research and

immediate and long-term decisions. Finally, the administration requires identifying and

defining job duties and efficient assignment of responsibilities.

Organizational ChartThe company’s organizational chart is refered to the organization of the company

into departments and the formation of the hierarchical pyramid. An indication of the

organizational chart may take the following form:

Design of the productAt this stage we have the initial design of the product that is the form / shape of the

material to be used, the necessary expertise required (innovation) and everything else

necessary.

IN REALThe idea constitutes the core of modern enterprising activity; the enterprising

process begins with the determination and the evaluation of an idea, the enterprising

idea.

During the first meeting, on

Saturday 22 October 2011, the work

team of the program realized the frame and the main concepts of the project.

In this meeting the work team was informed about the program Comenius, about

the aim of “Enterprising Young Europeans” project. Also we had an initial discussion on

the basic steps that we had to follow and the basic characteristics of our product or

service.

………. and our adventure in the world of business dexterity starts ………

Enterprising idea - ProductOur first priority was to choose a product which would have the following

characteristics:

Recycling Product

General Lyceum of Kalampaka

9

Page 10: Portfolio of the creation of Greek company ellitsa.com

Portfolio - Comenius EYE – Enterprising Young Europeans

Local Product

Meteora

Kalampaka

Pioneering Product

Innovative

Simple

Taking into account the way of how we will implement our enterprising idea, we

tried to apply the technique of brainstorming so as to choose the company’s product. In

the beginning, we put the above limits/key words describing the characteristics our

product we would like to have. Then we tried to think and write on the black board the

first words which came into our mind. After an hour we understood that the things

weren’t as easy as we had thought. The original suggestions were:

Package for food

Cheese

Olive

Olive Paste

Candles

Holy Pictures

Fridge Magnets

Tourist Guide

Greek Marsh - mallow with

fruits

Umbrella

Flying Killer

Traditional Pastries

General Lyceum of Kalampaka

10

Page 11: Portfolio of the creation of Greek company ellitsa.com

Portfolio - Comenius EYE – Enterprising Young Europeans

The idea that we had to choose one of the above

products wasn’t really exciting so we went to our

homes being confused. The next time we met,

things were different. That time we realized that

enterprise is something more serious than we had

thought and we should think in a more mature

way without losing our imagination and the

freshness of our age. In this meeting our ideas about the company’s

product were much better and more attractive. In particularly we

proposed the following products:

Gems from recycling products

Products made of recycling cardboard

Bags from recycling products

Cups for coffee with peculiar design

Olive Pasta in small jars with tag from recycling paper

Traditional Pastries

From the above products we chose two of them:

Gems from recycling products

Olive Pasta in small jars with tag from recycling paper

Then we separated in two groups and every group took one of the products to

analyze it.

After a couple of days we got together again to present to each other the

information we had collected for our products. The group that chose gems presented the

basic steps considering the construction of a ring (raw materials, the procedure of

creating and the presentation of the final product).

The second team presented the olive pasta, how it can be produced, the recipes,

the appearance of the little jars, the way that paper can be recycled and presented.

Following, we got into the procedure of choosing the product which could be

produced by our company. The procedure was simple, taking into consideration a very

good picture of both products, we chose olive pasta. The olive pasta had almost all the

characteristics we wanted our product to have. The procedure of the production filled us

with enthusiasm because it seemed to us as a productive line of remarkable steps, like

the research on new materials, the process, the formation and the final appearance. In

addition, the procedure of recycling the paper that would be placed on the small jar

seemed to be very interesting.

Name - Planning of enterprise

Having now the product it was very easy for us to

choose also the name of our enterprise. The idea for the

name of our enterprise was to connect it with the product

and after a small effort and with the attendance of all

students we found the following name:

The company was named Elitsa.com, name which emanates from words below:

El =Ellas

Elitsa= Olive

com= Virtual

com = Comenius

The type of company was selected to be Societe Anonyme because it is a flexible

form of company and an initial capital necessary for raw materials can be received by

selling shares. The company will have the following organization:

First company visit From the classroom theory into practice

The first opportunity for consolidation with the

above process was given to the group by visiting the

dairy industry TYRAS S.A. (Information about the

company attached in annex). This visit took place on

Monday 30 January 2012.

On Monday, 30 January our team visited the

company TYRAS S.A. in Trikala, a factory mainly producing cheese, milk and yoghurt.

We decided to visit it, to understand how this successful company was set up and which

was the idea that inspired the founders of this company. We went there by bus and,

although the trip was short, we were having fun with each other, discussing and

generally, we were all very happy about this excursion! When we reached our

destination, a woman, who was responsible for research and development issues

welcomed us and led us to a big room, where we were shown a Presentation, describing General Lyceum of Kalampaka

13

Page 14: Portfolio of the creation of Greek company ellitsa.com

Portfolio - Comenius EYE – Enterprising Young Europeans

the history of the company, how it works and specifically how the main enterprising idea

is converted into a large, national and successful group of companies. We were very

raring after this presentation ended and we left the factory, feeling that we know a lot of

new things, which could help us making our company! It was a wonderful experience!

What we did there??

There we were informed about a lot of things. Mr. Athanasoulas told us that with

vision and love for the work someone success. He informed us about the history of

TYRAS, the excellent facilities, and the methods they use to become always better. He

continued: The quality of the product is very important!! At last he said about the

environmental policy that follows the company. TYRAS has a lot of licenses which show

the eco- friendly methods that they use.

What we learn there??

After the visit there, we realized how difficult is to create a company from the

beginning. However, If someone has desire and love for his work he will success. Piece,

harmony and the feeling of “love” among the staff of a company is very important. The

president must also help and listen to everyone. He has to take care of his staff and the

company.

Chapter 2: Production planning

It is necessary for someone to take many important decisions in order to design his

production system. One of these is about the transformation process of raw materials -

inputs - into useful outputs. It is a strategic decision that has long-term impact on

business and largely determines other aspects of the business. Specifies the required

materials (type, quality, technical specifications), the basic forms - shapes, methods of

assembly of all the components, etc. The purpose of this planning phase is the

production of attractive goods with competitive prices.

The production planning takes place in Production department from the Production

Manager who is responsible for coordinating and implementing the production to

produce a high quality product at the lowest possible cost. He is responsible for planning

and control of the production processes.

Important for the production planning is to consider the following items:

What are the raw materials needed to produce the product?

What are the needs in human resources?

Which will be the processing phase converting raw materials to the final

product?

How will the product package be?

How will the distribution of the product be organized?

Objectives Keywords ActivitiesThe Students should:

-learn how to do the production

planning.

-learn what raw materials are needed.

-learn what a production line is.

-learn about the combined production

After the business idea and the company creation, our workgroup had to plan the

production of our product that would be the olive paste in jars with a label from recycled

paper.

The production process can be divided into the following phases:

Olives, olive oil, balsamic, salt, garlic, parsley, rosemary, thyme, oregano, pepper, labor, jar

According to the recipe: we remove the stones from olives and the seeds from the red peppers. Then we put all the ingredients in the multi and we blend them. Finally we put the olive paste in a jar and we add olive oil on the top as preservative, preventing air from coming into contact with the past and destroying it.Be careful: The jars that are to be used must also be completely clean and dry. Use extra virgin olive oil and cover the food completely. You must never, however, fill the jar right up to the top.

Jar, recycled paper, Olive paste, Olive Oil

Local level: Distribution Center = school, consumers = teachers, parents.International level: International fair in Germany (Comenius)

Recycling paper: First we put the paper we have collected from our school’s bins in water for four days. The second day we add bleach to the non-chloride mixture. The fourth day we put the mixture into a blender and mix well and then we spread on a table to dry. And the paper is ready for processing.

Detailed:

The working group first of all tried to create a standard (prototype) of

the product to calculate the production steps and to estimate the unit and

total cost of the product.

In the first stage our team had to organize the

manufacturing site and the production of the prototype.

So we decided that the most appropriate place was the

school physics laboratory. After this we had to seek and

capture all the materials we needed to produce the

product. Our production plan can be analyzed using the

following data:

Raw materials for the production of olive paste

according to the recipe,

Package materials,

The labor required at each stage of production,

How to distribute the product.

In the second part of the production planning we were interested in the creation of

the olive paste which is the main part of our product. In the laboratory we created all

necessary conditions for the production process which are described in the following

photos.

First we need to clean all the raw materials carefully,

Then we cut the materials on the size we wanted,

And the other process in this step is to create the label from recycled paper.

First we put the paper we have collected from our school’s bins into water for four

days. The second day we add non-chloride bleach to the mixture. On the fourth day we

put the mixture into a blender and mix it well, then we spread it on a table to dry. And

the paper is ready for processing and taking the thickness and shape we want.

The third step of our production is the packaging of the product and the final

preparation for distribution to consumers.

The paste will be packaged in small glass jars with a (recycled paper) label with

the brand of our company. Samples from several jars presented in the following photos.

The criteria for choosing the right size and design are: about 100ml, transparent glass,

with a cap that can be closed tightly. The preferred shape is round or polygon.

In this step we are interested to determine how to distribute our product (this will

be the theme of the next chapter of this report). The distribution of our product is

divided in 2 categories, the local and the international. At the local level we will promote

our products mainly to parents of our school’s pupils and teachers. At the international

level we would like to promote our product to the partners of this program at the final

fair in Germany.

Chapter 3: Marketing Plan - Strategy

…after planning the product, it’s time to organize and create the marketing strategy

for our company…

• The main idea of the marketing plan is to launch our product to the Market and

the consumer.

• For this, we need to consider the 4P theory.

Marketing Plan: Product

• The benefit for the customer from buying our product should be considered

first.

• And detailed research in this area is important.

Marketing Plan: Price

• If we set the price too high, we might face a stronger resistance from the

market in buying the product.

• If we set the price too low, we might create a negative low-quality image

for the product.

• Our product will cost about 3,50 € .

Marketing Plan: Place

• The word place indicates where our product should be sold so that

customers can easily purchase it.

Marketing Plan: Promotion

General Lyceum of Kalampaka

29

Page 30: Portfolio of the creation of Greek company ellitsa.com

Portfolio - Comenius EYE – Enterprising Young Europeans

Some ideas for promoting our product in real market:

• Cater for hotels

• Create an appealing logo

• Inform customers about alternative ways of using olive past

• Make a food related celebrity the central face of our campaign

• Sponsor cooking/food TV shows

• Organize cooking competitions

• Participate in bazaars and other community

festivals

• Promote through Facebook ,Twitter etc.

• Advertise on TV, internet and in press

• Promote in supermarkets

• Make offers including handy freebies with

purchase

• Cooperate with other established, successful brands

Chapter 4: Advertising

………..After the creation of our business, the planning of our products and the

marketing strategy, now it’s time for advertisement…….

A successful route of a product depends on the way of advertisement and

promotion.

A good advertisement has to answer 4 questions:

1. What’s the main aim of our advertisement?

2. What is the target group?

3. What does our product promise the consumer?

4. What makes our product unique?

In particular…

• The guide that the most people follow for the planning of an advertisement is

usually A.I.D.A

o Attention

o Interest

o Desire

o Action

General Lyceum of Kalampaka

31

Page 32: Portfolio of the creation of Greek company ellitsa.com

Portfolio - Comenius EYE – Enterprising Young Europeans

AIDA : More about Attention

In the first step what we should do, is to attract

consumer’s attention. With the first word, with the first

glance the advertisement should attract customer’s

interest.

AIDA : More about Interest

In the second step we have to attract costumer’s interest. So the message should be

smart, interesting and attractive.

Some things in life are priceless…

AIDA : More about Desire

In the third step we start to explain the content of the message which has to be

attract and persuade consumers to buy the company's products. In this way the value of

the product or service is converted into money. This flows into the business, improving

its financial position and eventually reused from it in various activities.

The product reaches consumers directly or indirectly. Direct selling is that under

which the consumer purchases the product directly from the producer. Indirect sale is

one made with the help of intermediaries such as wholesalers, retailers, dealers,

commission agents.

In any business there is a sales department which is responsible for planning and

organizing sales and coordinating the actions of sellers.

cooperation with other parts of the business, like marketing, production, finance, etc.

In addition to the continuous care for the production of quality and safe products

TYRAS establishes its view over the environmental issues. A System of Environmental

Management which applies to the calls of the EN ISO 14001:2004 certification has

already been implemented for all the company’s procedures. TYRAS not only operates in

an environmentally wise and considerate way by following current legislation but also

aims for constant improvement of its environmental performance. There is a constant

surveillance for new technological applications which aim at the reduction of waste water

in all plant procedures.

The company applies to the concept of Best Available Techniques (BAT) which is a

key principle in the IPPC Directive 96/61/EC by using environmentally “clean”

technologies for the waste water treatment procedures. TYRAS has made an innovative

investment for the environmental benefit and energy saving by establishing an anaerobic

waste water treatment system with the production of biogas and a unit for the drying

and incineration of the sludge that is being produced from the waste water treatment

plant which is a permanent solution for the sludge handling.

TYRAS contributes in the achievement of the National Goals for the maximum

exploitation of recycling by implementing systematic gathering, sorting and disposing of

the factory solid waste. This investment reveals not only the Corporate Social

Responsibility over environmental issues, but also the company’s contribution in the

conservation of planet’s natural resources through the exploitation of biomass as a

renewable energy source.
