REVITALIZATIONMontesión-Maldonados-Almirante Espinosa

(FP_ Torres Picado, Luz)

Th e project is based on the idea of REVITALIZATION, of reintroducing the traditional activities of the citizen into an urban area, by integrating the MONTESIÓN-MALDONADOS-ALMIRANTE ESPINOSA set of squares by means of the construction of the SITE at 6, Almirante Espinosa street, located in the Northeast of the historical center of Seville, in a place that would promote interaction and social relations.

We might say that the main problem these squares have today is that they are not really squares in the broad sense of that term (i.e. in use, form and confi guration; elements of which it is composed).

Th e geometry is a consequence of the development of the city and of the culture of the time. Th e irregular urban scene of the city, which seems disordered, is a heritage of an urban culture that is characterized by the tortuous design of its streets and ramparts, with a large population from diff erent ethnic origins; an active and outwardly expressive population. Th e above mentioned disorder produced by the lack of urban regulations and a concept of indoor-facing life, without attending to the city as an unit, has left an interesting design of streets where we can discover unexpected social meeting spaces belonging to this diverse population that to this day remains living in this area.

It is a space whose commercial character, family trades, and small establishments coexist with an active night life for young people and the initiatives of associations or small social groups who claim a space where they are able to express themselves without excluding individual lifestyles.

Th is area is contains diff erentiated social groups living according to an order that they themselves have created. It is the birthplace of Art and Expression, it is an area with high social interaction requiring support, as well as improvement of the existing support.

COMPETITIONPlaza San Francisco, (Anfh arq + FYM)(González, Laura - Jiménez, Carmen - Lucio, Roberto - Torres, Luz)

Situated in the historical center of Seville, San Francisco Square with our design is a new, alive and contemporary space within a traditional urban context. Without interference with the heritage and the uniqueness of the area, it is able to transform and adapt itself into diff erent situations that are given in this meeting and leisure point.

Th e project is based on a square working as a chameleonic skin from which certain pieces arise. Around those pieces are developed the functional spaces depending on the specifi c event that is taking place in the square in each moment.

In this way, this skin will be seen as a collage made up of pieces that mimic themselves and arise from the pavement shaping diff erent areas (or spaces) in which to host the diff erent events. As a result, the square will be colonized by pieces adapted to the activity to be developed within each piece.

Th e Project received a Special Mention.

WORKSHOP CATEDRA BLANCAUniversity Professional School(Gyorgyi, Csenge - Torres, Luz)

Th e project was situated in an urban zone in which the problems stemming from low density are clearly seen: long displacements, infrastructural defi ciencies, diffi culties in terms of pedestrian movements, etc. A University Professional School; that is, an institution providing necessary vocational training, was the aim of the project.

As a consequence of the surrounding area (Kansas City Avenue, Santa Justa Train Station and industrial park) we opted for a project situated within its perimeter, in which the internal organization of the space within this perimeter is of greater importance. Th e exterior, strong and closed line, coexists with an open and free interior. Diverse autonomous and functionally independent buildings (dining room, gymnasium, auditorium, day-care center, multi-functional classrooms, workshops) required construction in phases. Two of the pieces evaded this logic, breaking the perimeter and making the project less rigid by colonizing the site. With this movement we created the two access points which are linked with the city by public transport.

In the interior, with the diversity and position of the pieces, there are resting places, of diff erent character and dimensions, as an extension of the common services with functions that complement them and streets joining them up throughout.

Th e systematic and structural facade, of drilled fair-faced concrete concrete, together with the vertical communication nuclei, form the project frame which in its diversity, is understood as a single project thanks to its common materiality.

EXPERIMENTAL EXERCISE 50% + 50%. Th e daily agreement

(Martín, Pablo José - Torres, Luz)

“Reconsideration of architecture as an object that intervenes between the body and nature. And which with its material, spatial and organizational qualities, fi lters and modifi es the perception of what is natural and, by extension, of any kind of phenomena. (...) proposing a nature charged with new properties.”

“ Th e Natural’ will become more like something that is built on the basis of how the house can alter and establish the way in which we perceive nature.”

“Its way of settling without altering a single tree, in what is an endeavour to defi ne a building system fi t for its own eventual disappearance... “

PORTABLE CUSTOMS.Space and Nature production(Calero, Araceli - Torres, Luz)

Th e Guadalquivir River along Cordoba is one of the most interesting natural shapes, in terms of the relationship between the city and nature. Th e wealth of the geography and the fl ora in addition to the fl uvial phenomenon, presented an interesting challenge: how to approach the growth of the city in its relationship with the extraordinary space defi ned by the city and the changeable edge of the river.

A volume drilled as support of the public space in agreement with the topography, so that the project is understood as a big sponge, enabling us to question the relationship between the private and the public, the natural and the artifi cial, and the interior and the exterior.

Th e porous condition of the structure has its origin in the intermediate spaces which are generated. Socializing and sharing spaces which would leave freedom to the user’s improvisation. A hybrid program.

Spaces of agreement in a Macro and Micro scale. A house based on the spatial exchanges. Th e sociability is superposed, not organized.

Spaces of Agreement + Intermediate Spaces + Spaces of Exchange + Spaces of Complicity.

5th YEAR PROJECTBoundary + Geometry

Matter, emptiness, the courtyard, indirect light, the structure and the building system are a single ‘Sculptural Space ‘.

Each exercise set during the 5th year is a self-experimenting practice on how to confront the various projects, adapting them to each scale and without forgetting the area in which they are placed, under the same work system; that is, to begin with the form, and to end having adapted to the required programme: ‘Sculpt the Matter’.

Models of self-carrying volumes, strategically drilled, looking for emptiness while facing a strong and evident presence.

Desarrollo y Ejecución 2013 Investigation project 2013

Th e competition raises a regeneration of the Messina waterfront at the south of the so-called “zona falcate”, a tongue of land where the city’s port is located. Th e project area is shaped as a transition zone, an intermediate space in the transversal mountain-city-sea system. It shapes the façade of the city around the sea – the Strait of Messina collects intensive cruise traffi c –, and it’s also a space with fabulous views of the Strait and of Reggio Calabria.

Composing and editing of the Eddea Architecture studio’s portfolio.

Th e “Heliodón”, or solar machine, is a tool that simulates the solar path and allows for verifying the sunlight as well as interior lighting at diff erent levels in architectural or urban development models. Th e machine interweaves the model of study with a light source using the three variables of solar geometry: the latitude, the day of the year or season and the hour of the day.
